Hi Elfer Fans:

On my 2000 996 - I am trying to replace my silver horn pad crest with a new colored crest.

Does anyone know how to remove the old one from the wheel ? It seems to be stuck on real good... is it riveted or similar?

It makes me a bit nervous to try to forcefully pry the crest out knowing there is an airbag ready to go off undreneath it.

The new crest simply comes with a sticky back so I assume that the old one is also just stuck. Not however what someone working at my local Porsche dealership parts-department told me- who said the crest is an integral part of the airbag/pad system and cannot be replaced without replacing the entire pad and airbag. Is this humbug?....sounds like it.

Any pointers ?

Thanks as always for your help.

Gregor

A number of folks really like the silver crest.

You might try listing your airbag cover (including leather color) in the For Sale - Trade section. Someone will likely be willing to trade.

It is riveted on and is not meant to be removed. It would become a projectile aimed at your head if it were not....which leads to the question...why would you put a stick-on on the airbag cover? are you asking for trouble? Loren has a better idea...trade your silver for a colored one from another owner.

As stated above, find someone to swap air bags with.

You would have to remove the cover and grind off the back of the rivet, or drill through the face of the crest. This is not a standard DIYer project.

I forget where this picture came from.
