Brake problem

This morning my 98 996 C2 cabriolet suffered braking problems. Whilst driving along at a reasonable rate, when I applied the brakes hard the response was fine, but if I applied the brakes again within a minute then the brake pedal became as hard as wood and barely depressed and did not slow the car much (as if the servo had gone?). If left alone for a little while it was fine, and then again if re-applied soon after it was really difficult to get it to move more than a centimetre or two and did not brake well.

I pulled over and shut down the engine and restarted and it seemed better after that although I was so careful it was difficult to tell. I nursed it back to the garage where I purchased it and have left it there (UK time - it is now closed), but obviously need it looked at.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
