I will make a long story short

1- My english is not perfect I'am french Canadian

2- My car is a 2000 986 S

3-I have a problem with the ignition but the ignition is not the real problem in the key hole in the top on the key hole 45 degree angle their is a tiny cylinder that goes up (force by the key when you put it in) and down when you remove the key. My problem is that cylinder will not go down by itself leaving all the accessories at on ( same as if the key was in ) to put it down I have to give a good wack on the ignition, not the way to go with a Porsche. I try many lubricant but none work. What should I do?

Yes, the key info (transponder data) will need to be transfered using a PST2 or PIWIS tester.

What would be your sugestion

1- I only have 1 key and and would like a second one ( buy ebay and go to the dealer )

2- Go to the dealer and get that problem fix

3- Can I do something myself to save a bit of $$

Like many on you love the car but I dont like to taken for a foul by the dealer

Only if they will let you put the locking assembly in (at their location since you can't drive it until the keys are programmed).

I would buy a spare key from Sunset Imports (Porsche Parts at Dealer Cost at the top of any page). That way if their are any questions about the authenticity of the key - you have a Porsche dealer to vouch for it and you.

Are you sure the key is the problem? I got a similar issue and had to change a switch in the ignition. Beside requiring the flexibility of a Cirque du Soleil acrobat it is not that difficult to change.the culprit is a crapy Audi part that is notorious for failling (Jeff can provide you with the part number, it is 50% cheaper is you get it with a Audi part number instead of a Porsche one).

By the way, I'm THE flying French man on that board (I do Acro on Citabria when the weather is good, and IFR on Cesna 172 when the weather is not so good...) again Jeff can provide you with a picture ;-)

Thanks, guys I will try to change the switch hope it work 20 $ repair versus 500 $. And for the record I’ am the Flying Frenchman, cool name but I don't fly I DRIVE, I’ am currently doing a lot of moods on my 986 S, I will post picture when everything is set and done. Headers, custom metal high flow cats good for the planet and good for performance so very very good, short shifter, lightweight flywheels... I will really be flying....

Ok guys did the repair and work those 20 $ ignition switches are beautiful

The initial problem was the cylinder (in le lock assembly, (white 45 degree angle)) at the top will not go down

Change the switch and solve the problem

The problem was in the switch where the screwdriver point their is a mechanism that push and was not working, resulting in not pushing the cylinder down in the lock assembly.

Wow 20 $ Audi part at just any parts stores

Original part with the Audi logo we really have volks parts....

can u show me exactly how to remove and install the new switch? took the car to my USUAL mechanic and he had no idea on how to remove the lock. after 3 hrs , suggested dealership...............
