I would like to know what mileage everyone has on the 996. Also, if there has been problems with the car, please list it.

Thanks!

I wanted to see how long these cars last. For my M3, it is normal to see 150k miles on it. As far as I know, I don't see many 996 above 100k.

121,000 miles so far. No major problems. Had to replace a water pump (something that is very common in the BMW community) and have it in the shop right now for what is likely a problem with the A/C compressor or clutch. Given the miles and the rather spirited driving, I'm fairly pleased. Most of these cars aren't over 100k miles because more of them are garage queens than ///M3's.

19K miles, only problem is staying on the dark part of the track and off the slippery green stuff.

64K miles on the Tiptronic, sold it with no major problems.

But you bring a good point, not sure if possible for Loren to create a database in the site, where we can enter car information with subsets for problems within areas or main components. It would be powerful data to have if we get a decent population and can do analysis - predictions - etc.

I think a database of car's mileage and problems along the way would be a great benefit to everyone. Such as this broke down at x miles so that other 996 owners can be aware.

99 c2 tip: 68,500. Only real problem was a busted tranny...HOWEVER...I believe it busted due to a mechanic failing to use the recommended fill procedure when I had the tranny service, which resulted in my driving the car for several months with a low fluid condition...toasted the transmission. Other than that, my car has been pretty trouble free (I have much of the service history for the car, and from what I can tell it has only been o2 and maf sensors (2 MAF's...one as a result of my K & N air intake experiment), and a busted coolant tank (very common in Arizona...$200.00 diy). Other stuff is just wear and tear...just replaced the rotors last week...I believe they were original.

2001 C4 with 35,000 miles, one RMS has not yet done due to awaiting time for the clutch replacement probably at 40,000 miles. O2 sensor replaced (DIY) driver side after cat. No other problems. No tracks though.

My 02 C4S has 25K and no major problems of any consequence. I agree with others it would be interesting to capture a data base of reliability info for reference of all users. At the same time, given the diverse conditions and 'duty cycles" the membership drives their cars it might be a bit tricky correlating the info into a meaningful summary.

My 1999 C2 6 speed coupe has 71,000 total miles but only 2000 on the engine. I had an intermix problem caused by either a crack cylinder head or blown head gasket and had to have the engine replaced. Very aggravating at the time but I got a new remanufactured engine with a two year unlimited mileage warranty.

I agree it would be great to have a data base on the 996. It would be interesting to see how many engine failures would be reported. ;) :renntech:

2002 C4S - 80k miles and running like new!

Dealer records from Day 1 shows no mechanical problems at all.

No RMS so far, I had a busted coolant hose once,

and electrical/memory setting problem with seat-key programming.

I hope to remain lucky...

*Replaced alternator at 81300miles on June 20, 2007

My 1999 C4 6-speed coupe has completed 48k miles with no significant problems. I had to replace an exhaust manifold gasket (I believe you call these header gaskets in the USA) last year, and that was a ***** of a job. Every stud into the head sheared - nightmare.

A friend of mine owns a 1998 tiptronic coupe, his car has done 68kmiles, also with no significant problems.

2003 C2 cab, 50,500 miles. RMS replaced at 45k and about to go in for tappets under warranty. Otherwise, only real problem is stone chips!

2000 Cab: 69,000 miles. No mechanical problems other than having to adjust hood latch one time. Never been in the shop other than for routine maintenance.

I did have the semi-common glue failure in rear window at about 40K.

2000 C4 Cab, 29K Miles, OPC Maintained, Recently had a new clutch and RMS fitted, and under extended warrenty I have had a new MAF , Starter Motor and Passenger window regulator replaced.

1999 C4, 54,000 miles. Water pump at 44K, and the driver's window up/down feature 40, one bad line on the rear defrost. A great car.

I think Porsche makes great cars if you treat them right. I owned a 1986 944 for 12 years and sold it at 202K miles, after a clutch and some rad reparis along the way.

My perception, totally subjective, is that it ultimately costs less to maintain a Porsche than what Detroit produces if you keep both for 150K to 200K miles.

Database sounds like a good idea, but there are a lot of variables to consider. Here's a few:

1. Track car

2. Track & Street Car

3. Street Car, Daily driver

4. Occasional driver

5. Garage Queen

6. Number of owners

7. Driving technique

8. C2, C4, C4S

9. Turbo, NA

10.Coupe/Cab/Targa

11.Performance Mods?

12.Lease/buy

etc.etc.

FWIW, My 02 Cab was delivered 1/02. Have 29K.

Leaky oil pan cover and bolts replaced under warranty at 21K.

Out of warranty now, but still dealer serviced. Has had 30K + annual a few months ago. No problems. I guess you could call it a GQ+ altho it had made a couple of trips back and forth from Cape Cod to FL, so it does get exercised. Stored last 2 winters. No track, no other problems. (sounds like it's for sale :) it's not)

Daily driver: I bought a 2002 C2 with 60k miles; I checked the service records through Porsche and it had essentially no work done on it.

I've had it for just over one year and put on an additional 18k miles with no mechanical problems (other than a starter that was began to make a noise and fixed itself after a couple weeks).

As a follow-up to my earlier post, I have learned that the alternator is kaput. I'm not terribly disappointed considering the mileage. I also sort of suspect that the timing of the alternator's failure was remarkably close to when I cleaned the engine with a spray on, rinse off engine cleaner .... hmmm? Not to worry. Indie says 625 to install new aftermarket alternator, including parts and labor. Gonna have them put on my new stainless steel headers while they've got the car. :D

Daily driver, C4 2000, at about 45,000 miles air conditioning condenser leaked, battery went flat but otherwise no real problems (some irregular revs at starting till sparkplugs were changed and some squeaking noise from the belts on reversing after washing the car or raining). On the whole, a great car!

'03 Cabriolet C2 wit 48,000 miles as a daily driver in Las Vegas. No probles beyond regular wear; replaced the clutch at 42,000 miles.

August 6, 2007.....now have 53,000 miles; 'cats' replaced by dealer after check engine light. Sounded like pie tins humming/rattling from about 3,500 to 4,500 RPMs. Dealer mechanic originally diagnosed noise as predetination due to poor fuel. After six tanks of 100 octane noise persisted, then engine light came on, the car insisting that something was amis.

The only other incidents involve plastic parts breaking: seat trim came off after fastnening cip broke, speed control stalk snapped, and the hinge for the fuel cap door. All covered by the dealer except the hinge.

Still very much 'in-love' with this car!

'99 C2, Tiptronic, daily driver

71,000 miles, 3rd owner (bought at 42Kmi)

Normal wear and tear and all recalls done

The following are actual failures that needed to be done:

-Front Cowl leak (clogged drain) at 48K

-Airbag light on-twice (seatbelt connectors replaced), mileage unknown

-Replaced front control arms (Idler Arms? Drop Links?) at 52K (rattling)

-Replaced door speakers at 52K (blown)

-Valve cover gasket leak repaired at 52K

-Turn signal replaced at 60k

-Sun roof makes noise but I'm living with it for now (rattling)

-RMS and intermediate shaft seal (upgrade part) at 71K

-Vent breather (?) leak repaired At 71K

-Trans pan gasket seeping, replaced at 71k

-Valve cover (same one) leak repaired at 71K

Luckily all but the intermediate shaft upgrade part were covered by my extended warranty. This last round was a bit of a surprise but we still love the car and intend to keep it as long as practical, possibly replace with another. (As long as I can get an extended warranty!)
