For newer cars ('07 987,997), I've heard that Porsche has replaced the PST2 with a new 'centralized' diagnostics system, which sends the car's information to a center in Atlanta(?) for diagnostic and repair analysis. I've also heard that printed manuals are no longer available, even to the official techs - everything is online.

Can anybody confirm this new system, and what implications does it have when these cars go 'off warranty'? Will independent shops have access to this system, or another alternative?

Thanks,

John L

The PIWIS came out about 2 years ago. It is the replacement for the PST2. A PST2 will not work on 2005 up. An independent shop can buy a PIWIS just like they were able to buy a PST2 but it is very expensive. 2 local independent shops I know have a PST2. I doubt they will be in the market soon for a PIWIS because it is so expensive and the new cars are still under warranty.

Porsche started phasing out paper publications some years ago.

Interesting, but what about the notion of a centralized diagnostics center (in Atlanta?)? Is this central to PIWIS, or optional?

Not sure what that means.

When the new Boxster came out Peter Smith put on a tech session and told us all the fancy things that the then new PIWIS could do. I was not paying much attention since I cannot afford one. I am almost positive the PIWIS can be hooked up to your car and the tech folks in Atlanta can see what it is doing. I also remember something about it being wireless. If you have a specific question I can ask Peter next time I speak to him.

If you have about $20,000 burning a hole in your pocket you can buy a PIWIS on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...p;rd=1&rd=1

Just about a bargain :D

Actually, i too heard something like this. Each time the PIWIS is hooked up to the (MY06+) car the technician must transmit the info to PCNA before work is carried out, or something like that anyway. I recall someone mentionning Panorama quoting this.
