The only retrofit kit that I know of is for the Cayenne.

I do not know if you can put that (or a 997/987) version in a 996. It is a custom unit for Porsche and may require MOST (I can't check my schematics right now as I am traveling).

Other options are the aftermarket Homelink system or the garage door opener hack in the DIY section.

loren what the part #for homelink

Here is another option. Besides the Homelink, you also get an automatic dimming rearview mirror.

where can u get it

I bought mine on E-Bay. I did a search on Google and found the following:

I am sure there are other places. It works great. I tapped into the switched 12V source in the overhead console area so running wires was not an issue. Easy install. You will not be able to use the standard mirror plug on the windshield. I installed the mirror plug that came with the mirror next to the original one. Unless you are really looking for it, you cannot see it.

Wouldn't you be better off with an unswitched 12V source so you can open the door when you're in the car before you turn the ignition key? Is there an unswitched power source in the overhead console?

There may be a constant 12V. I didn't look for one. I have my Valentine wired into the same source so it was readily available. The self dimming mirror has a light on it and that could be a concern as a voltage draw if the car sat long term.

I normally use the wall switch in the garage to open the overhead door. It has not been an issue for me to have to have the ignition on to use the opener in the car.

Has anyone bought a Homelink visor kit and taken it apart to install above the overhead console? Used Homelink devices are often available on Ebay, such as this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...2177&rd=1,1

The appearance of the unit shouldn't matter, since I would just install 3 small black momentary switches and a small red LED in the overhead console, with the Homelink electronic box above the overhead console. But I'm not so sure how easy it would be to take the Homelink unit apart.

Anyone?
