Aside from obvious visual ques, what is the difference between the 997 and 996 Nav systems?

I had seen a great deal on a full set up for a 997 system that came complete with disks, harness, cage, and drive system. The thing that caught my eye was that the shape of it looked a bit different but that the overall size was the same.

1. Would it connect up to a 996 console?

2. Would there be a different horseshoe to buy to dress it up?

3. Would the computer see it as a vaild system?

I have a 2003 Targa.

996 - PCM 1 - cd reader in the console

996 - PCM 2 - cd reader in the PCM unit

997 - PCM 2.1 - dvd reader in the trunk

1 - no

2 - irrelevant to the case

3 - no PCM 2.1 is a part of the CAN bus display system

I don't want to muddy the waters, but.......

I seem to recall that all U.S. 996's, MY01 and subsesquent have the CAN bus. The CAN bus ties together the instrument cluster, the A/C control and the diagnostic port. And all U.S. 996's, MY03 and subsequent have the MOST bus. The MOST bus ties together the radio/PCM, the external CD changer, the external amplifier and the telephone. The CAN bus and the MOST bus don't talk to one another. However, there is a link between the instrument cluster and the radio/PCM to insure that the radio/PCM belongs in the car, i.e., not stolen. If the 997's have the same CAN bus/MOST bus configuration, IMHO, the 997 PCM should work, electronically speaking.

Whether the PCM fits or whether the peripheral things like speed, forward or reverse gear, or any of the other imputs to the PCM can be hooked up, you would have to determine by looking at the installation manual and comparing cars.

Cheers,

Bill
