Is it possible to jack the entire rear of the car [996TT] from the "lug" at the forward end of the engine cases that has a steel jacket bolted to it? It seems to be a natural place to put the floor jack and take the whole car up and then put the jack stands under the rear suspension. Thanks, Peter

I jack my car from the main rib of the engine casing (further back from where you're suggesting), this area is a very strong part of the engine. This has been debated many times, and is a common way of doing it. I support the car on jackstands either at the jacking points just forward of the wheels or the suspension crossmember carrying all the suspension parts.

I wouldn't put a jack to any of the actual suspension pieces, I'd be afraid of bending something.

What about for a 986? How to put the car up on jack stands? Where to put the jack stands? I've searched but can't seem to find any reference.

Do you place a block of wood between the center case rib and the jack pad? Is this the same for a 997tt?

I have no room for a block, the jack barely fits under there! It appears to be very rugged, but if you want you may be able to use a small disc of rubber for protection (maybe cut from the sole of an old sneaker?).

I think that the part that the original poster is refereing tois the engine arrestor (stops the engine moving far in an impact.

I've been told that this point is the best lift point by a VERY reputable GT specialist in the uk.

I've used it myself plenty of times.

just cant get my head round jacking a car from the crankcase!
