Whis is the best Radar Detector?

Better still, in order not to start a response show like whe asking for the best tires and/or oil let me refrase and ask, which Radar Detector would you recommend?

Valentine One, there is no substitute. I've owned two and would not be without one. They are also upgradeable when new technologies come out.

Best solution I have is V1, hardwire to the car phone power wire. If you run the power cord inside the passenger side A-pillar trim, then you can use the V1 clip to attach it to the sun visor. The cable is hidden and you can leave the detector power on always, but will only turn on when you start the car. V1 has the remote viewer which fits nicely under the tachometer so you can keep your eyes forward and recognize the radar. The detector unit won't light up, only the remote viewer, which makes it more "stealthier".

There a couple of good articles in the site for how to hook it up

I have a v1 and it's saved my keister plenty of times. The dang thing falses ALOT though, Driving through town it's pretty much useless...but for the expressway its awesome!

Indeed! To the point of me just switching it off!

Now, on deserted TX interstates, I can see LEOs driving with their radars on from about 15 miles away!!!

Sometimes it is even annoying, I have to drive for minutes, before I get visual

for anyone living in europe...the v1 with euro specs works really well...just the false alarms in towns/built up areas cuase me to turn the thing off or at least turn the volume down

Viola,

haven't heard of RMR, but sound like a cool startrek type of tool. What is the information, full name, model, etc. and do you have a website for the manufacturer to go see? Thanks in advance.

I love the V1 but have an old remote mount Escort SR1 in my 996. Its been very good, although finding a place to mount the receiver was a pain in the rear. The newer Escort remote mounts seem to have smaller receivers and probably a lot easier to install. Also, note that the remote mount Escorts are supposedly only sold through authorized installers as an installed unit. Mine was purchased from someone I know post lease return so I installed it myself in my 996. Its pretty good about low falses in town but you really need to know what you are listening for, and where.

Purchased my first Porsche on December 2nd. Got my first Speeding Ticket in 15 years on December 2nd...........

BUT not as you'd expect. I was on the way to buy the 996! I was driving my honda, on the cellphone, pre-occupied with the call and thoughts of a new car dancing thru my head. I saw a motorcycle whip out and pull over a car 200 yards infront of me.. By the time it registered what was going on there was one pulling me over too. 67 in a 55, double fine zone speed trap(Vasco Road in the SF Bay Area). Most Likley ANY radar detector would have saved me, even a $99 truck-stop special.

I've had both a V1 and a 8500 in the past. Both have been stolen by means of Broken window in my Honda. I really liked the direction indicators on the V1. On both I would disable X-Band. Yesterday I ordered a new V1 and remote kit and plan on doing a stealth-mount up & behind the rear seatlets (they are too small to be called seats!)

I 2nd Izzy's request: more info on the RMR! The V1 has saved me many times but a jammer is even a better idea.

Be wary of disabling X band. Many newer police radar units are utilizing X band. It apparently allows the manufacturers to produce a much smaller antenna that is more easily mounted in front and rear facing configurations.

The Valentine 1 & Passport 8500 are both excellent...although owners seem to claim fewer false alarms for the 8500.

For my 996 Cab, I chose a built in detector. I've been pleased with the Escort SRX. A local shop installed it and mounted the display inside the console (fairly easy to get to via a side panel). A single LED was added to the emergency flasher switch on the dash. So, as you look in the car, the only evidence of a detector is the single LED (with a hidden on/off toggle under the dash). Have had the laser shifters activate several times so far. No response by LEO's.
