987 Seat belt replacement done

I installed matching speed yellow seat belts today, and very happy with the result. (As usual, my stealer wants $300+ just for labor, but it turned out to be less than 20 mins job including taking pictures) It was easy enough, 3 bolts each side. 0. Here is my Christmas gift, colored seat belts. 1. Disconnect the battery! 2. remove side-lining panel 2-1. remove a small screw outside 2-2 & 2-3 there are two plastic bolt & hook, shake it

Great write-up, a few questions if you have the info:

1) What is the torque specifications for each of the bolts?

2) Why do you need to disconnect the battery?

3) What is the "fabric protector & cleaner" for?

BTW, they look great!

1) I do not remember the spec now, but 48 or something. (as in workshop manual).

2) You don't want to see 'seat belt warning light'!

3) Colored seat belts get dirty sooner or later. Better to protect them from the beginning.

To answer your question (from PM),

Yes it Porsche OEM and you may get the best price from Sunset or SunCoast. Either way you can get them for around $400+ including shipping. Somehow seatbelts are hazard material, so shipping is expensive.

As of MY02, all Carrera and Boxster models are fitted with belt tensioners and belt-force tensioners.

The pyrotechnic ball belt tensioner is combined with the belt-force limiter in one unit. The threshold value for triggering the pyrotechnic belt tensioner is calculated as for the airbag actuation from the sensor signals for vehicle deceleration. The triggering of the belt tensioner during a frontal collision takes place together with the triggering of the front airbags. During a rear collision only the belt tensioner is triggered.

After a collision both the airbags and the seat belts are replaced (if triggered).

So there are no belt tensioners, or other pyrotechnic stuff on the earlier models (a 1999 996 C4 for instance) in the seats ? I am considering to change the drivers seat for a Sparco seat I had in my previous BMW:s, and that I currenlty resting in the garage. On the BMW:s there were belt tensioners and I needed special subframes that had brackets and fixings for metal wires connected to the release handle for the positioning of the seat. I have not been able to find any subframes for the Porsches.

Thanks for the write-up, this, combined with the factory manuals, allowed me to install my red belts today. You forgot two crucial steps though:

When reinstalling panels:

Be sure to do what I did and break off the inside tab when you try to get them to clip back onto the body. It's not a "job done right" unless you get to curse and moan at yourself. Especially twice. If someone can tell me how to get those panels back on without breaking off those tabs...well, I guess it's too late for me. :P

After you've put everything all back together again and reconnected the battery:

Be sure to do what I did and freak out when you turn on the car and get "PSM FAILURE" and "PASM FAILURE" on the display. Certainly, don't go drive the car around the block and have the computer reset/recalibrate/whatever it does--that'd be way too calm and lord knows, we all want to be able to say that installing seat belts by yourself instead of taking them to the dealership is enough to cause massive system failure!

One other thing--the factory manuals state that you shouldn't reuse the bolts. I thought that was preposterous--there's no way these bolts are stretch-to-torque.

They tell you not to use any kind of lubrication or substance on the bolts. So I took a closer look and realized that the bolts must come coated with a lock-tite paste. This was further affirmed by the fact that I had to chase the threads a bit on the bolt holes before the bolts would go in properly.

So, a question--Should I buy the Almighty New Porsche Bolts to replace the perfectly-fine ones, or should I use blue lock-tite as it seems the factory did? Or should I not worry about them backing out even though I didn't coat them?

Questions, questions...

Ok dumb and lazy question, but how much were the belts themselves? What a HUGE improvement for a brief amount of time on the install. Just curious how much pain to the wallet! Helps when looking at used, or pre-spec cars that need a minor change to improve the appearance and seal the deal!

$399 at www.suncoastporsche.com Check our sponsor Sunset Porsche too, they usually have better pricing.

Question: Does the battery remain disconnected until the new belts are installed ?
