This is my first time post at the renntech, I am seriously considering the 99-01 996 for a new everyday driver, I have been looking for a few mo now and am very surprized on how affordable they are becoming 25-35K, and i really like the mods that can done for the 996 and interior of the 911 now is great for everyday use, all the comon comforts are there compared to the AMG mercedes s i have been driving has a everyday drivers for the passed 10yrs, The only problem i having is the engine failure problems i have been reading about on other forums,, I dont think i can find CPO 996 for under 40K and dont thinK a extra 10K is justifaction for the mark up,

So this leads me to ask are the Posche factory manuals availible yet for the 3.4 liter engine, I can do all the wrok myself with enjoyment, water pump coils, oil changes, timing chains etc... i have rebuilt a 911 2.0T engine 911 2.4S engine rebuild the cylinder heads on both 16v cosworth mercedes and the c36 AMG so i think i can handle most fixes with/without the help of a machine shop, i just like ot know the real factory specs and torque numbers are cd's or dvds or books out to the public yet??

Currently no aftermarket manuals exist for the 996 Carrera (Boxster yes -- Carrera - no). The 996 Carrera manuals (as are all Porsche service manuals) are no longer printed and I doubt there are any still for sale.

The manuals available online at Porsche's Tech website for purchase. Each section (i.e. engine part 1, engine part 2, fuel/exhaust system, etc., etc.) are $110 each as downloadable PDF files. Their are about 17 sections plus a section for each model years wiring diagrams.

You can also get unlimited access to all the Porsche service manuals for a yearly $5,200 subscription. The manuals are very complete and quite good.

I've search Amazon, and this forum to see if this has changed. Any one know of a service/repair manual like Haynes for the 996?

I purchased a copy of "Porsche 996 - The Essential Companion" from Amazon dot com. It isn't quite as complete as the Porsche Shop Manuals or even the Boxster's Bentley Service Manual when it comes to heavy duty work on the car. But it has great explanations on how the systems on the cars work, extensive trouble shooting information - including OBD codes - and a DIY section that will cover most if not all normal servicing requirements.

As I have said here many times before - the manuals on this site have maybe 30 of the 88 supplements/updates for the 996 service manuals.

So they are wrong in some places and have whole sections missing in others.

I appreciate all the feedback. I was really just looking for something basic and straight forward. While I've done some minor repairs to the Porsche and my motorcycles recently, I would like to know more and have a handy reference.

You should have a look at alldatadiy.com. Not sure how up to date it is, but what's in there comes straight from the factory workshop manuals and contains virtually everything you need.
