oil change

I have a 2006 tiptronic cayman s. It currently has 1600 miles on it. The dealer told me the oil needs to be changed every 2500 miles. This seems a little excessive. Is this correct?

Strange dealer - Porsche says every 20,000 miles.

20,000 is correct...depending where you live and how often you drive (yearly). I'm in Ontario, Canada. Here this is a summer car, so miles are low and oil change should be at the start of every season after it has been sitting for months. A battery maintainer is needed as well.

Last year, I had the oil changed on my brand new 987S just after the first 1,000 miles. I view this as cheap insurance and good piece-of-mind. Now I change it every year just before winter storage.

I am old and grew up in the era where you changed oil every 3,000 or maybe 6,000 miles.

Now it is 15,000 on the 986 and 20,000 miles on the 987/Cayman. And the funny thing is Mobil does not even claim 20,000 miles. I got use to it, what the guys on the oil message board call "extended drain" intervals. I figure the engine holds twice the oil of a "normal" car and you are using synthetic.

Some people say this extended drain is for ecology reasons. I'm more cynical. BMW services your car for free for 4 years. Porsche does not. Some people when they are looking at a car what to know what the maintenance costs are. A Porsche sales person can tell a customer you do not even need to change the oil until 20,000 miles.

Was just at the local [Albuquerque] Porsche dealer kicking Cayman tires yesterday and he mentioned that the factory had just changed the recommended oil change interval to 10,000 mi or 1 year, whichever comes first. I'm a 3,000 to 4,000 mi changer myself, even with RedLine synthetic. Cheapest engine insurance there is....

Go to the top of the message board and click on downloads, then all downloads. The official maintenance checklists from Porsche are there.

For 2005-2007 it is 20,000 miles or 2 years.

For 2008 it is 24,000 miles or 2 years.

Take what a salseperson tells you with a grain of salt.

I agree Tool Pants - what the manual is, is what is. Dealers sometimes will tell you misinformation because the people working there are new and don't know the correct answer, and sometimes they are looking for more work by indicating that more frequent servicing is taking care of your baby better.

Anyways, your choice Beckham007. But yes every 2500mi appears excessive based on a normal driving pattern ie. you using your car regularly.

Every 2500 miles is certainly not correct - however, it should also be changed at 2 years regardless of the mileage. If you have a 2006, you should start getting the maintenance reminder on the dash before too long.
