I've recently bought a 2004 (MY05) 997 C2S which I was told had the MP3 CD capability within the PCM. However, it did not work, and despite all the latest firmware upgrades by the OPC, it still doesn't. Latest feedback from the OPC was that they would replace the PCM head, but now they say this is not possible - part numbers not matching VIN etc.

My guess is that there were an early number of PCM units that do not (and cannot) support the MP3 format CD. Can anyone substantiate what the OPC is telling me?

Thanks.

Hi,

I found out that the MP-3 player only works in the interior car stero. If

you load CD's in the trunk, the MP-3 format will not work there. Hope

this works for you.

Have your OPC refer to TSB 1/05 9110 PCM2.1 System Connection: Complaints and Repair -- dated May 5, 2006.

Thanks.

I'll check they have read that TSB.

On another note, I have just managed to order the Dension Gateway 500 unit. If I wanted to install myself, is there a TSB that covers the acces to the appropriate units to be connected?

Thanks.

I think you will need to refer to the TSB's on this forum regarding MP3 player compatability. Only the PCM units supplied for MY2006 came with the ability to play MP3 tracks using the front CD drive on the PCM. The earlier versions of PCM can only be upgraded to version 3 software. The later versions of PCM (MY2006) are running version 3.3 currently I beleive.

Nick

Did you get this problem resolved? I too have a pre MY06 997 and my in car head unit does not read mp3 which is a feature I would love.

Look forward to hearing on a successful resolution to your problem.

There is an update CD available that takes your software on the PCM from Model level B version 3 to 3.3, the part number is 000.043.205.46.005. The tech bulletin suggests it refers to the post that Loren has inserted in this thread , and also allows for a check / repair of the CD drive. Though i have a copy of the software CD , I haven't been brave enough to update it , as my PCM 2.1 is outside of the model numbers listed on the associated tech bulletin. I have already updated from Level A version 1 to Level B version 3 to allow use of a 2006 map DVD. Even with this update to level 3.3 i'm not sure that the MP3 player facility will be available , as it's possible this is hardware specific rather than software. Since the update of the level A to level B software can be done using the CD drive on the PCM , it's possible this update can also be done in the same way. If there is anyone brave enough to try updating an early version PCM to level 3.3 please post your experiences and results here.

Loren,

I have seen reference made to "CD text capable radio". I have an early 2005 Carrera S with Nav. I cannot play MP3s in my slot loaded CD player. Does this also mean that my radio isnt "CD text capable"? The reason I ask is that I want to buy the Denison ICE unit or my iPod, but if the song names do not come up on my PCM unit, I do not think the expense would be worth it. Thank you.

CD Text relates to a novelty feature that music CD's contain the details of the track on-disc negating the need to input album/track names each time.

Its not connected to the MP3 system which itself uses a different system for displaying the name information.

To get the track-specific information up on-screen it will depend on the interconnecting equipement you use. In this case with the Dension, i believe it will.

Some Radio stations are capable of generating text also if you scan stations and have the RDS or other text functions turned on they should show if broadcasting the info

Does anybody on this board have a copy of this update?

If so could you burn me one. I'd be happy to reimburse you for the CD and shipping.

I don't believe it's copyrighted or protected.

Thanks!
