The first picture taken at my house is the extra regulator I have. Forget, but I think I have a right side.

The second picture taken at the dealer is the motor attached to a customer's old regulator. This is a left side.

I have watched Manny the mechanic replace 3 regulators on 996s. He removes the regulator from the car when it is still attached to the motor. Then removes the motor and bolts it to the new regulator. Then the combined unit is put back in the car.

The regulator is like the plastic tank and ignition switch. Crap. I would not waste time putting in a used regulator.

If the window drop does not work then try what is suggested at the PCA tech site. Put the window in the 1/2 position. Grab the glass and see if you can move the glass up and down a bit by hand. If you can then it is the regulator.

i think it might be obvious. ;)

good god! never seen one that bad, chris!

what do i win?

Did the symptom of the window "not dropping" come all at once with no warning (my did) or did it go down less each day until it stopped?

it was making scratching noises when i put the window down and up for about a week. there was no problem with the dropping of the window when i opened the door. the part of the cable that rusted must have been farther down the track. but one day, the window just stopped half-way up and that was that.

you'll want to get to fixing it before it gets to that point. it was very hard to get to the window clamps from the position that the window was stuck in. i had to get creative and use an adjustable wrench to hold the torx driver perpendicular to the wrench, as i had NO room to maneuver because the door sheet metal was in the way. it was a real PITA.

i'd take your door panel off, cycle the window up/down to see where you have the best access to both clamps, and remove it from there before you don't have a choice in the matter.
