Will GT3 back boxes make same noise as a PSE ??

Hiya

In my quest for a Porsche Sports Exhaust I was offered some GT3 back boxes.

Would these back boxes make a similar sound to a PSE ?

If it sounded the same it would widen my search as a PSE is proving very difficult to find.

Anyone heard a C2 with GT3 back boxes on ?

My car is a 1998 C2 by the way.

I don't think they fit somehow. Different engines entirely.

But if you want the stock PSE and you want it cheap, I suggest you go see Europorscha http://www.europorscha.com/

Note that he has them priced here at £795. That's a massive mistake. But if you hurry and get onto it quickly he will have to honour the advertisement. Its a full PSE at a 3rd of the price new!

I don't think the £795 price (ex VAT) is a mistake, and anyway their Terms & Conditions page includes the clause "14) The right is reserved to alter price's and specification without notice."

It mentions a quote from an OPD of £1019+VAT for the hardware and £620+VAT for fitting. £795 vs £1019 sounds like the sort of saving I'd expect from a parts specialist over a Porsche dealer.

I called Europorscha up a couple of weeks ago & they said that the price was a mistake. I have found OPC prices (with my PCGB membership 10% discount) are similar to what the specialists are asking.

The cheapest price new I can get one (just the hardware) for is around £900 from an OPC.

I have been offered one for £600 plus VAT (used) which is an option.

I would get it fitted by a specialist - the one local to me is very good & their labour rate is less than half the OPC's.

OPC's also will not agree to fit it without the wiring in & button on dashboard, specialists are happy to fit just the boxes & fix them open - which is what I want.

Talking to my OPD they consulted Porsche Technical and were willing to fit the PSE without any wirings or even the 30-40kpm quiet mode..

worth talking to them but it was still not a cheap option...

Well a few months back I bought a set of Fabspeed GT3 bypass pipes for £120! on ebay. And I am about to replace my Maxflow mufflers as soon as I can figure the easy bit.....how to jack up the car.

From what I understand, these things are seriously loud and they are the closest you get to a GT3 sound. I want to try them for a few weeks just to see what they are like......P*ss the neighbours off ;)

No seriously, I will put my maxflows back. I am just playing around.

Is a stock early 996 with PSE quieter than a GT3 or similarly noisy?

Also, does anyone know the noise level readings of a PSE? If PSE has a quiet mode to pass noise regs in some part of the world then I'm wondering whether it might fail a strict track day noise limit. Isn't Jonathan Palmer's place 95db? I've seen GT3s at the Nurburgring pass the ~100db limit there but that's quite a lot louder than 95db.

From what I have read on other boards etc... the GT3 is louder than the stock 996/muffler combination.

But a stock 996 with the PSE is louder than a GT3 - Don't forget that a (stock) roadgoing GT3 still meets noise regs.

The Bypass pipes are effectively a car with no mufflers ie straight through exhaust directly from the headers (note that the cats are still in place and probably do muffle the sound ever so slightly)

A 996 with bypass pipes at WOT sounds like a full on race car ie Very Loud.

Yes I'd agree that a GT3 is louder than stock from the few cars I've heard.

I didn't realise that an open PSE was effectively a straight through exhaust (with cats)! How come there's no increase in power with a PSE? The cats I guess.

It sounds like an PSE without the 'quiet mode' fitted could fail a UK trackday noise test.

Sorry for the misunderstanding but the PSE and the Bypass pipes are two different items.

The PSE looks like a normal 996 muffler with a vacuum operated valve which effectively bypasses/or not PART of the muffler's internals - note that it does not bypass the whole muffler as such just some sections of its internal chambers. This gives a noisier exhaust without being way over the top.

The bypass pipes (eg. fabspeed) are just a bit of bent tubing with an exhaust tip stuck on. These are fitted just after the cats where the normal mufflers connect to. The mufflers are not utilised and are infact removed when using this setup. This gives you an effective (incl. the cats of course) straight thru' exhaust which is very loud and would probably fail noise limits set at most tracks.

Now the PSE is fairly tame below 3K rpms but at say 5K+ rpms it is quite loud but I'm not sure of its actual sound level as such but it is less than the bypass pipes but louder than a GT3's exhaust setup.

Well fitted the bypass pipes on Saturday. I must have been nutz.

Apart from the nightmare getting the maxflow system off (had to angle grind the 4 bolts attached to the cats).....and then back on again....alignment is not easy......

These bypass pipes are sick. No seriously. I mean you have got to be totally anal or brain dead or both to even concider them (hmm....is that me:-).

No way. They ar rediculously loud. I can't believe people use them for street. They destroy the respect any bypasser would have for the porker. They sound like the mufflers have fell off down the road.

Disgusting. At idle, the car sounds like a tractor. Head ache! what head ache. I can't hear any more. I gone deaf.

Anyway, good to have my maxflow kit back.

Sounds like a 993 I saw a couple of years ago at the Nurburgring. It was making such a racket. We were in the car park were just shaking our heads saying "he's not going to get out on the track with that, he's taking the *****". He was duly told to sod off by the marshalls without even a noise test.
