Paint Swirl/Scratch Help

I just traded up from a 98 Boxster to an 01 996. I was taking time during a visit to my folks over the weekend to polish and wax it. I'm sticking with the same products I used on the Boxster, 3m Imperial Hand glaze and P21S concours wax. Anyway, on the front bumper there was some imbedded dirt/tar crap that I couldn't remove with the 3M, and I did'nt have the mild 3m polishing compund I use at home. Well, I went to my Dad's car care section and found a can of rubbing compound that musta been 30 years old. Maybe age had concentrated it, it took the junk right off, but in it's place I have a two inch area that's slightly scratched, like paint swirls but worse. The 3M won't polish these out, so I'm looking for suggestions on how to get rid of them. Boy, am I glad I did'nt use that stuff on the whole front bumper!
