After Market Alarm

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a 2000 carrera coupe and am having problems with the "one" oem remote that I got and locking the doors with the key. The key remote does not work even after I changed the battery and reversed polarity for 10 sends like i read. When I turn the key in the door only the driver side door locks. Plus the lock button on the console will light up but doesn't seem to lock or unlock the doors.

I am installing a complete stereo system with an expensive navigation/dvd player in the car and want a working alarm. I have done a lot of reading but not seen much in the way of diy yourself alarm installations on this forum. I have installed a few alarms in my time but always had a color coded wiring diagram. Has anyone tackled this type of job or have access to this information. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

P.S. I will post a step by step diy yourself post with pics when I am done..

Thanks

Martin

Thanks for responding so fast... I don't know what or if anything is actually wrong with the factory alarm. I'm pretty sure the key remote is toast but I may just be doing something wrong when the locking the doors by turning the key in the door. Sometimes it works fine and sometimes it only locks the driver door. I'm not sure if I am supposed to turn the key to left first before locking the door or if there is something else. Should the key button on the console lock and unlock the doors normally?? Either way I still would really like to install an after market alarm with remote start and a few other conveniences. Where can i find a wiring diagram??

Oh, I was doing some reading on pasts posts discussing how the oem radio has an integrated sensor for the alarm. I just bought the car a week ago and It would appear the previous owner had an after market stereo in the car and put the oem back in before selling it. I had had to put in the 4 digit code before i could turn on the radio and it seems the fm antennae was not ceded in all the way into the back of the stereo because i have no fm reception. I'm wondering if this may have some connection to my potential problem

Thanks,

Martin

Yes, the OEM radio ties into the OEM alarm system. An aftermarket system can be tied in or it can be left out of the OEM alarm system.

As I said it sounds like you need a quick scan of the alarm controllers fault codes to detect what the problem is. That same test program can verify that your key fob is working or not working.

Where are you located? Some independent shops (and a few private owners - like me) have a PST2 (or PIWIS tester).
