Preparing a Boxster for a Hardtop


Preparing for and Installing a Boxster Hardtop Parts Required: 1. Porsche Boxster 2. Porsche Boxster Hardtop 3. LH Hardtop Spinlock Insert (p/n 986 563 713 03) 4. RH Hardtop Spinlock Insert (p/n 986 563 714 03) 5. Spinlock Retainer Bolts (qty=2) (p/n 999 219 041 00) Tools Required: 1. #2 Phillps-head screwdriver 2. Ratchet 3. Good.

I do not know what the bolts are made of, but they are not magnetic. Avoid dropping them inside the top cavity when putting them or you will spend all day trying to fish them out.

I installed the spinlocks on my 2000 Boxster today. No problems. One tip- I put the barrels in the freezer overnight. They dropped right into place with no force needed

Freezing the inserts, what a clever idea! I would highly recommend it if your inserts are tight fitting.

Again, levering the die-cast part open just a touch with a screwdriver can help as well.

Also, due to the effect of low temperatures on metal parts, be sure you do this job when the car (and the spinlock receivers on the car) are room temp. If your inserts have been sitting on thekitchen counter all night, and you go out into your freezing-cold garage to install them...they might fit very tightly, or not at all.

Again, great call on the freezing!

Thanks so much for this info! It took me about a hour to install everything, and it looks great. I froze the bolts and the spin lock recievers and everything slipped in without a snag. It needed a little finessing to get it to seal properly, I had to adjust the three bolts inside the actual top. But wow what a diffrence I found in road noise levels...soooo quiet! One question, my rear defroster plug doesn't seem to reach the wire coming out of the floor. Is there an extension cord or plug that I am missing? Part # anyone?

Didn't respond right away, but we did this procedure too just a couple weeks ago after picking up the car. No freezing or anything, picked up the parts at the dealer on the way to get the top. The sleeves dropped right in... both sides took perhaps 30 minutes total.

I own a 2001 Porsche Boxter and recently i baught a hard top from ebay. I guess it doesn't come with the following parts required to be installed to my Porsche:

986-563-713-02 insert, left, qty 1

986-563-714-02 insert, right, qty 1

999-219-041-00 fit bolts, qty 2

I've been looking around and I'm having a hard time looking for these parts....can anyone show me where i can actually purchase these parts?

Are these parts the only required parts to be installed?

Are these parts available in set or should i buy them individually?

Around how much will these parts cost me?

Thank you. this helped me fit a second hand hartop in under an hour with the right tools.

It's much appreciated. Even my Porsche centre couldn't tell me how it's done!

It's transformed the car.

I have removed the interior trim and spent a couple of hours trying to install the bolts to secure the spinlocks with no success. No matter what position the top is in the bar that moves the top up and down is in a position where the bolt cannot go in straight. At first I was afraid I would cross thread the bolt but that isn't a problem because th bolt will not even go in far enough for the treads to catch. Any suggestions?

Just following the directions this all went well for me, maybe 45 minutes, much of it spent actually locating the trim and spinlock bolt locations.

Move the seats fully forward if it hasn't been mentioned already. To insert the clamping screw I used the 5mm Eklin T-handled wobble wrench #64850 as recommended on the Boxster Wiki and it was all pretty smooth. The baggie trick is great and I'm sure I'll find other uses for it as life goes on.

Note that when you remove the driver's side trim the defroster cable comes with it; no need to detach it, just place it in the footwell. Replacing the trim pieces took the most time of all the steps, I lowered the top again to get better access.

The next day I drove over and picked up the top. It took a bit of jiggling to get things in place, maybe five minutes. but all seems good. Signficant difference in road noise, my car is a 2000 base with the single layer fabric top.

This thread seems mainly about tops for 986. I understand the 987 setup is different, with respect to access to the insertion of the shoulder bolt. Can anyone advise if it is possible to fir the bolts without removing more than the side trims on the rear door posts? I am just about to attempt this. The bolts must be one of the most expensive parts on the Boxster for what they are - £75 for the four pieces in UK. and Porsche Centre want 1 1/2 hours labour charge to put the bolts in place! Any advice much appreciated.

Problem solved, and installation kit for 987 mounted. As I thought, it is impossible to get the shoulder bolts in to the spinlock mount, because of the lack of space afforded by the arms whatever the position of the hood.The spinlocks drop in easily however, as there is an aperture which is clamped by the shoulder bolt. However after some lateral thought, my mate Simon, who is a VW specialist, realised that if the spinlock mounts couldn't be accessed with the hood on, the mounts themselves would have to be removed. The hood was partly raised for best access to the mounts.They are held to the body by two T40 Torque drive bolts which can be reached with a ratchet drive and bit extension, though the caveat about dropping the bolts into the cavity is important.. Part numbers of the mounts are 987 561 053 00 (nearside UK) and 987 561 054 00 (Offside UK), and once removed the shoulder bolts can be fitted easily without fear of cross threading

Replacing the spinlock assembly is the reverse.Job done!
