If you had to do it all again would you still go Pioneer Z1 or would you consider another double-din in lets say a Kenwood or Eclipse brand??? Beautiful install by the way. Sweeeet. I too have a C4s and am contemplating what to buy. Cheers

I had the AVIC-HD1BT fitted to my 98 996. (Fitting was included in the price, so I though I would take advantage). The reason I went for the Pioneer is that it was the only one which incorporated SatNav, DVD Video, Bluetooth phone, iPod connection (extra cost), UK Speed camera database (extra), voice activation and HDD music library (hardly used with iPod). We don't have satellite radio in the UK, so that wasn't an issue. Overall I am delighted with it.

Being an early 996, I ended up with a gap at the top of the AVIC. I cut up and glued the old a/c surround to fill the gap, and it worked out really well.

Hi Richard the AVIC-HD1BT looks lovely, I have been thinking of doing this in my Boxster, can you tell me the place where you got this done (I'm not far from you in Bracknell) the included fitting sounds good, what was the cost all in? Also are you happy with the sat nav and the UK speed camera operation? Where do you have the Ipod connection?

Alistair, I had it fitted by Road Radio Ltd (www.audio66.co.uk) in Crawley. It was £1700 plus £45 for the iPod adapter, and £39 for the TeleAtlas camera database. The iPod is in the centre console compartment. They did charge me an extra £35 for fitting, as it took about 5 hours. I can't complain, as they did a nice job.

The SatNav is very good and it is a huge advantage to have TMC. Like all the satnav systems I have used the voice instructions aren't absolutely perfect, so I find I need to glance at the screen at junctions. The camera database is a bit out of date (it still beeps at the temporary cameras on the M40 which were removed 6 months ago) but they tell me a revised version will be out soon. It certainly isn't as good as the Origin b2 I had before, but it isn't bad.

In any regard, I put an AVIC-Z1 in my 2002 Targa and it works and looks great.

My only quibble is the glow on the buttons is blue, whereas the rest of the car is amber. A small thing, I know, but somehow annoying nevertheless.

Got me inspired and can't wait for the weekend to have a go at this!

At the moment my Kenwood head unit is in the top of the lower console and AC controls in stock position.

Main objectives are to stop the Kenwood and the gear level head-butting each other and to have the Kenwood screen as high as possible to get a better viewing angle. Actually at the moment if you press the touch screen(which covers the AC when opened up), the top of its frame tends to hit the AC Auto switch. Pretty daft arrangement which I’ll add existed prior to purchasing the car!

I'd like to end up with (from the top down):

Head Unit (1 unit high when slid in)

Aircon Control

Pocket

Other pocket

Maybe squeeze in a cup holder somewhere?

Can you think of any problems with this arrangement whether the practicality/cost of doing the work or in using the equipment afterwards?

Been searching for an hour and can't see an example of this arrangement (would be grateful for a link if I've missed it).

I got everything wired up, but I'm not getting sound out of it. Do I need to find an amp remote wire somewhere that i'm not seeing in the wiring diagrams? My AVIC unit powers up fine... just no sound!

Found the answer on 6SO. There's a black wire with a red stripe on the C plug (yellow plug) that is the amp turn on wire. I needed to splice that to the remote turn on wire, and music started coming on.

What's the latest on doing this (Pioneer or Kenwood) on a 'MOST' equipped 996, with Bose 'upgrade' already installed?

CONFIRMED! The Metra Wire Harness (70-1784) worked perfectly for me. I just taped off the wires for the speakers and used the rca amp inputs. Took 15 mins from start to finish of the install! NOTE** Someone had mentioned elsewhere that the constant and power lines are reversed, THIS IS CORRECT, so either change the two wires in the metra harness or just wire the yellow from the metra harness to the red for the new stereo harness and vice versa for the red to yellow.

I think this looks super - form and fit look very very good. It would be great if you could write DIY including parts lists (and where to get them). If you do we'll get it into the DIY section so others can give this try too.

Is there a readily available point (like under the left seat) for the illumination wire hookup? If I opt not to hookup the rear camera in an install, I could feed the reverse wire from the seat which is much easier than trying to get to the wire bundle under the right rear panel in the back of the car.

I have a 997 (2005) BTW, and I believe that the illumination wire (at least in the back of the car) is Gray/Red. Can you confirm any more "convenient" location to tap into?

Most folks tap into one of the existing switches or the old radio connection.

Find switch with illumination and tell me the wire colors and I will look them up - but I can't look up all the grey/red wires in the car.

How about this? There should be a MOST fiber optic connector, and then 3 regular connectors (with copper wires) that plugs into the back of the PCM 2.1 head unit. Attached is a photo of the connectors. I'm assuming that one of the copper leads is in fact an illumination wire, but I have no way to tell. If you can find the pin-outs for these 3 connector, or just the one that is illumination, I'd appreciate it.

Sorry, none are an illumination wire.

So the only reverse wire is under the passenger seat? Seems there would be a connection right by the Tiptronic shifter.
