  1. Alan, you should keep going there. Pretty soon you will have a full tool set! :) Last year the Porsche dealership (Motor Werks, Barrington, IL) left an 11 mm wrench in my front trunk. Right in the front latch catch area. The worst part of the Porsche car ownership experience is dealing with poor, overpriced service at the dealership level. Sad. Happy Birthday to your wife. That's a very nice gift.
  2. Jay H, just one other thing to consider. Do you have young/small children? The reason I ask is because the 2005 987 did NOT have smart air bags. The 2006 and newer does. So, with my young children, I safely used a booster seat and the current seat belts in my 2006 S. The airbag automatically turns off, based on the weight of the occupant (about 90-100 pounds is the cut-off). This is also in accordance to my State laws. Just a thought.
  3. Spiro, that's a pretty good price. In the Chicago area, oil changes, at the dealership, start at about $250.
  4. Correction. Here is the spec Porsche uses per Peter Smith, PCA.org Tech Q&A: 1.6 qts (1.5 liters) per 625 miles (1,000 km). That's a lot of oil burn, and still considered "in spec", IMHO.
  5. You should bring the oil level to the full mark. Then drive 1,000 miles, and report the exact oil burn to your indy or dealership. Then a basis can be established, and corrective action implemented, if necessary. Not sure of the exact numbers, but I think Porsche considers 1.5 quarts per 1,000 miles acceptable for the Cayenne. I just saw this issue raised in Pano during a Q1 2009 issue. Not sure of the exact month. Turbos should, and do, last much longer than 60,000 miles.
  6. I am going to bring a plactic bag to the delaership for my next oil change, and ask for my filter back. I want to take a look-see.

  8. Spiro asked a legitimate question (I thought), and now Orient Express, and Spiro himself, are taking shots at me for awswering the qustion. Does not make sense to me. While I don't agree that the 20,000 mile service represents the "best value" for your hard earned cash, it's still what it is. And it is not just, "an oil change". Both of you are Contributing Members, and can view the actual checklist here on the Forum. If you can do everything on this list, have at it and have fun. What is your time worth? How much do you "bill" per hour? Don't forget the very high value of your personal time too. To drive a Porsche for 20,000 miles and then have to go to the dealership for maintenance, and pay a few hundred dollars for service sounds like a pretty good deal to me. That's the cost of addmission. Would $300 be better. Sure! How about 'free'? Great! But that would not have been the correct answer to the question. Don't kill the messanger. I'm just passing along info. The way some of us drive our cars, and do the things we ask them to do (with our right foot!) I'd want some very trained eyes looking the car over. Not just some weekend-driveway-warrior assuming everything is A-OK before heading out for another spirited drive. If, and when, you decide to sell your car someday, this could be the difference maker in how fast and at what price you sell your car at. Just another consideration.
  9. The 20,000 miles service on a 2005-2007 987 is also known as the "Minor Service". And, yes this is the correct interval. It is different for the 986, and the 987 after MY 2007. I have seen prices all over the board. Middle ground is about $600.
  10. The shop rate at most Porsche dealerships far exceed $100 per hour. Heck, Ford charges $99/per hour for my Explorer. Price looks OK to me. Can you do it? What is your time worth? Things to consider.
  11. Jay, then be willing to expand the search area for your Boxster (200, 300, 500 miles away). And, during the drive home with your new baby, the two of you can bond. :)

  13. Ed, you should continue to do your yearly oil changes. Good/cheap insurance. I also agree that the brake fluid should be changed every 2-years as Porsche recommends. The price you were quoted seems high, but, then again you are in New York. Lastly, having good/excellent maintenance records will help you in the future when you go to sell the car to another buyer in a private sale environment.
  14. Don't buy a car you have never test driven. Yes, it cuts both ways, your trade will be worth less too.
  15. Great time to buy for cash-in-hand shoppers. There are tons of Porsches for sale. You don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate. Paint the car any color you want, but expect to pay huge $$$$ for a quality job. $10,000 min. Now, if you put "RS" badging or markings on the car, that's a "poser" IMHO. In this economy, everything is effected. Have you driven the car?
  16. White, I'd be interested to hear your reasoning behind your statement. Here are my thoughts: 1) Skip the 2005 MY- first year of the re-design. Just my opinion. I always wait an extra year 2) The "S" has more HP and a ton more than your current car. You will see a HUGE difference. 3) You can probably buy an 06 S for the same money (or less) over a newer base Boxster. Great time to buy! There are a ton of cars for sale. Have cash-in-hand and you will get a great deal. Be patient.
  17. The 993's are pure art. I have been looking at '96 and '97 993TT for about a year now. Done a few PPI's. Yet to pull the triger.
  18. Secuuda, I can give you a little advice. Mine was done by the dealership, due to the fact that Porsche "forgot" to do this at the factory on my custom order. 1) The top also has to come off, partially. To get the roll bar out. 2) Make sure the roll bar if properly prep'e prior to painting. Including primer. 3) Don't put the windscreen inserts (black parts in the hoops) back in for several weeks (+4) until the paint is fully cured. ToolPants once posted pictures on how to remove the "leather" parts (and tool used) from the roll bar. Can you get it powdercoated vs painting? How much are they charging you? A quality job will be about $1,200 from what I have seen. The factory option was about $535 IIRC. Aftermarket is never cheap on these cars. Good luck. Post pictures when completed. It's a great look.

  21. I would think the 997 is wider, so it would not fit, as stated above by others.
  22. How are your tires? Mileage? Tire pressures? Wear? What are the road conditions like in your part of the World? Are the roads sloped for drainage/run-off?
