  1. Got a new Gahh sonnodek top installed over Thanksgiving. It has been up on the car since. We had a warm day here and I put the top down for the first time and could not get it to latch back. The installer said it would stretch out with heat, but it is unsusable now. It took me two people to get it latched and that won't work. What can I do to accelerate the stretching process without damaging the top? Thanks, :renntech: Mark
  2. Thanks again...I ordered them and will get to work this weekend. Wish me luck!
  3. I am changing mu AOS and Coolant Reservior this weekend. I have read the great DIY threads here, but I can't seem to find the tool everyone says not to do these jobs without. Can anyone direct me to an auto parts store that caries these or to a website that I can order one? Thank you as always. Mark
  4. Guys, Just wondering where is a good place to look to find a 986 hardtop arctic silver? I have looked in the parts for sale section and ebay as well as PCA mart. Is thare another place I should be looking? Any problems with looking for a used one? Thanks as always Mark :renntech:
  5. Thanks guys, I finally had a minute to look at the spark plugs and found that the middle one on the driver's side was barely loose. Tightened everything to speck and the chirp is gone. It is funny how such a little fix can make you feel very good about the car again. Now I am ready to tackle the AOS. Thanks again to all who helped!! :renntech:
  6. Has there been any other reports of the AOS causing chirping?
  7. It definitely sounds like it is worth trying. Any threads on how to access spark plugs and torque specs? I will report back after I tighten them. Thanks Guys Mark
  8. The noise continues and it seems to be mostly when the engine is under very low speed torque. I can be in 1st or 2nd, but as I am leaving a stop, but it is not speed related. Sometimes it is a single chirp and sometimes it is less loud and is a series of chirps that are at a consistant speed as if they are related to something spinning in the engine compartment that rotates at a constant velocity. I am interested in the loose spark plug, but i just cannot fathom how that would produce a chirping sound?
  9. It seems to chirp at low speed when accelerating in 1st gear as well as 2nd, sometimes it will have several chirps in a row? Maybe a loose belt slipping?
  10. Hey guys, I am new to the 986, but have been on the 996 board for a couple years. I have a new to me 98 5-speed 2.5L 986 with 65K miles. When I start the car up I often hear a high-pitched chirp, also under very slow speed acceleration. Like pulling into the driveway. It does not seem to be speed sensitive, nor do I feel the tranmission slip. Any ideas? Do you need more info? :renntech: Thanks Mark
  11. Guys, I need help from the brake gurus. I have tried different manufacturers of pads and have come to love Hawk Blue pads for my 99 996. These pads are rediculously good on the track. I have this awfull squeell at every stop. I know that these are track pads and there is some howl when they get to teperature, but this seems excessive. 1. Is there any way to quiet down the pads I have? 2. If I change back and forth to stock pads, do I have to change/glue the dampers every time? 3. Is there another solution altogether that I am missing? :renntech:
  12. I have 99 C2 and have never had problems. I track the car often and have 48K miles. Do I just have a good one, or am I still looking for a leak? Thanks :renntech:
  13. I am at work trying to order a lug nut socket that will not damage my new chrome lugs. What size socket will fit? Thank you for taking kare of me in my time of ignorance!! :renntech: Mark
  14. Does anyone know a good source for GT3 seats? I have comtacted Sunset, but have not recieved a resonse yet. I have heard of them being sold for $1300, but I can only find them for $1600. Any help would be great. Thank you, Mark :renntech:
  15. Thanks guys, I will give these suggestions a try and report back. Thank you also for not raking me over the coals for the rookie mistake!
  16. I was in a hurry to change my oil and did not let the car cool. I stripped the hex on the oil drain plug using too much force on the wrong allen wrench. I ordered a replacement, but I need to know how to approach removing the existing stripped drain plug. I was thinking thar getting the 8mm allen socket and tapping it into place may work, but I am afraid there is not enough left to grip it. Any suggestion for a dumba$$? :renntech:
  17. I am in atlanta and have a set of mufflers. I too upgraded to Fabspeed, if you are interested email mcvgums@cs.com.
  18. Anyone have a picture or drawing of this installed? I'm not sure where it goes. Do you have to take the whole console out to intall it?
  19. Thanks Loren, I will take pics if I get to that project. The carpet may be cost prohibitive when I can just leave the seat bottoms in. Thank you for the part #
  20. I have read the threads that describe the rear seat back removal, but after it is removed is there an easy way to dress up the empty spot? I saw a photo someone posted in a thread about the BK harness, and they did a great job cleaning up the rear seat delete. Do I need to order GT3 carpet, and can I get it in Boxter Red? :renntech: Thank you for all your help!!!!!!
  21. Will this part fit on a MY99? Or is it just for the 01 and newer?
  22. Guys, I am a 996 owner who is purchasing a 87-89 G50 Carrera for a fun/track car. What are some of the options/upgrades even engine swaps that might make it a real screamer? I hope this forum is as helpful as the 996 :renntech:
  23. The new cap has 01 as the last 2 numbers, and there is some dried coolant that looks like it sprayed from the new cap. I wiped it clean and there is more evidence of it leaking. Is it possible to crossthread it? Is there any sense in trying the old cap?
  24. I replaced my coolant tank on my 99 996 C2 coupe as instructed in this forum and burped the system when done. Since the replacement, I had a terible coolant eruption that looked like it came from the cap, and I assumed I had not tightened it completely. Several more times since I am suspecting coolant spill and it looks like it is from the cap. I replaced the reservior, sensor and cap with the suggested parts from Sunset, but I am stumped as to what might be going on. Any suggestions would be appreciated. :help: It is a shame to have such a nice car and be afraid to turn the AC on. :renntech:
  25. Yesterday I was sitting at the light at the end of my drive when the idle pulsed from 500 RPM to 2000 RPM repeatedly. I reved it several times, but it would always pulsate when at idle. I turned the air conditioning on and it stabilized the idle, but at 2000 RPM. This occurred an hour lated when I took the car for a short drive, but I cannit get it to do it again. It seemed to have fixed itself, but I don't want it to come back. What could it have been? 99 996C2 6-speed Coupe 40K miles Thanks for your help :renntech:
