  1. There are endless discussions on this board regarding your post. Here is my 2 cents Chasing HP with a non-turbo Porsche can be very expensive and addicting. Many of us have gone through this and can attest to the large amounts of money we have spent.(ie wasted) You will never have the fastest Porsche. If you are will to dish out the coin then just get a turbo. HP is easy with a Turbo. Granted the car will be quicker with the chip and X-51 goodies. But you will not get the HP claims of the manufacturers. I had a 996 and had every mod on it (chip, exhaust, plenum, air box, headers etc) One day at a stop light I(foolishly) drag raced a New modded Honda civic and he beat me. I knew then that the chase for HP was pointless for a straight line race. There are lots of 996 turbos out there for sale with well over 600 hp. If that is want then save yourself some money and get one. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!! All the best Phillipj
  2. Has the shop done the swap before? I'm having my 2000 C2 swapped to a 3.6. The company that's doing it (www.roocksport.com) reprograms the 3.4 DME and adds additional hardware and software to run the Vario-Cam Plus. They do these swaps all the time for Boxters and 911's. It has taken them quite some time to get all the bugs out If your shop hasn't done this before you may be in for some difficulties.
  3. Here is a link to buy the tape. You will be able to get everything you need from this company. http://www.paulfrancispaint.com/servlet/Detail?no=9 Phillipj
  4. Do a search here.. The are lots of DIY's on replacing your MAF. It's very easy. Here is a link to one http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...hl=cleaning+MAF Phillipj
  5. If you go on 3M's webite youi will see they have a tape made for body accessorries etc. This works very well. If you get their adhesive promoter that also is a very good product. Be sure to finally clean the surface surface with rubbing alchohol before applying the new double sided tape. Here is a link for the tape. http://products3.3m.com/catalog/us/en001/a...ler/output_html I had to reapply one of my sills because i didn't properly prepare the surface and the tape lost adhesion. This is the tape I used to fix the problem and it works great. For the tech people here attached the specs on the tape. Success Phillipj mediawebserver_66666UuZjcFSLXTt4XT_O8TXEVuQEcuZgVs6EVs6E666666__.pdf
  6. There is no "one stop" mod that will get you 50HP. If there was everyone would buy it :D A chip + exhaust + headers + air box + Plenum may get you 25HP. But even that is highly dubious and expensive. The car will run better and be more fun to drive though  For the price of super or turbo charging your car you could just buy a Turbo.... Just my 2 cents. Maybe just get a Turbo where HP gains are relatively easy. Or get the new S. Maybe others in the forum will have a different view. Good luck!!
  7. Good luck. I hope you find the source of the leak and it's an easy fix as well!
  8. If by chance it is coming from the cam covers it could be the covers themselves or the spark plug tubes. Let me know what you were able to diagnose. The tubes are relatively easy fix. Leaks from the covers can sometimes be remedied by just putting the special sealant on the bolts and re-inserting them without removing the covers themselves (a procedure which requires a special tool.)
  9. is the leak coming for the cam covers as well? I know the fix for that....
  10. RFM is a very knowegable Porsche tech in Belgium. His screen name is RFM. If you go do a search of members at the top right of the page under the "RennTech.Org" logo you will se the members link. Type RFM in the search field. His profile will come up. Send him a message and tell him your delimma. He has helped me and others countless times. I wish I could help but I have never swaped my alternator. Success! Phillip
  11. PM "RFM" he will be able to help you
  12. I have a really good relationship with my mechanic. When it comes to brakes I buy all the parts online (all Porsche OEM) and he intalls them and just charges me labor. Saves a lot of money. Good luck. There is no need to pay the dealer when you don't have to!
  13. I agree with Loren. You could do it yourself. Or have a good Indie mechanic do it. They should be about half the cost of the "Stealer" and probably do a better job. My wonderful dealer (I wont mention an name but it's RUSNAK :D ) charges $225 for an oil change where an indie charges $125. Same oil, same filter, same labor....... Phillipj
  14. I will provide as many details as I can. The 3.4 engine will come out on the 2nd of January and the 3.6 will go in the next day. As long as there are no unforseen problems I should have the car back by the 5th or 6th. They (Roock Autosport) are flying out a tech from Atlanta so they are trying it get it completed as soon as possible. I would love to be there an watch the entire process but I'm working that week  Can't wait..... Phillipj
  15. Okay I have a date for completion of my project. Engine is on it's way. Work will begin January 2nd. If all goes well I will have the car back on the 9th. Seems like a long time away... I can't wait for my father-in-law to say to me at Christmas "So how is that Porsche of yours running?" Oi... Happy holidays and thanks to everyone on the forum for all the great information they have given during my time of sorrow  Phillipj
  16. Wow that is really unsightly. Dr. Porsche would not be pleased lol!
  17. If you don't track the car go with OEM rotors and pads. The rotors are very reasonable online. If you go aftermarket rotors the hubs may rust if they are not powder coated. (I think Zimmerman may have fixed that problem.) I don't see the reason to go aftermarket when the OEM rotors good and reasonably priced. Call whoever you trust at Porsche and they will tell you exactly what parts you need to do a proper job. Make sure to get the backing plates and shims (to prevent squeaking.) Also buy the new caliper bolts. Some people try to save money by not replacing these things but they are very inexpensive (in the U.S.) and will ensure you do a proper job (so you don't have to do it again.) I buy all of the parts my self online (OEM Porsche) and have my mechanic install them. He only charges me $125.00 for labor for the fronts. Hope this helps. Phillipj
  18. Thanks Viola, Now I learned something as well! :D
  19. Only thing I have heard is that some plastic's can be very heavy and cannot be fixed if damaged. The fiberglass is very light and can be repaired. I guess this all depends on the type of plastic used. I have had both on previous cars. I found them both to look great (they were done by previous owners.) I'm sure some other members here can give more detailed feedback. Good luck!
