  1. Scary what some shops will tell you. I find it harder and harder to find anyone that takes pride in their work and has integrity. Thank God for forums like this that allow us to do our own work and not fall pray to these Porsche pirates. I would get it checked by another tech. Try to get a refferal. Have a leakdown test done to give you some piece of mind. I can't imagine how the car could run great with a cracked cylinder. If that were the case surely you would have some signs of oil/water intermix. I'm no F1 engine builder but geez.....
  2. Great news :D Hopefully just your AOS. A real PITA on a 996. But you can do it. Great to hear you have no intermix issues. :clapping: Let us know what you find.
  3. Loren is the site admisistrator. He has a lot of knowledge with P cars. Hopefully he will respond to your post and give you some guidance. He has done a lot of short shift kit DIY's and has experience with the issues of the shift cables. It would help if you stated the exact year and model of your car and mileage. As well as past issues (if any) with your transmission.
  4. Get a second opinion. Did you see the plug? What did it look like? Seems to me that if you had a cracked cylinder you would know it. How does the car run? I guess a "leakdown test" would tell you what was what. Let us know what happens but definetly get another mechanic to look at it.
  5. My client sent this to me today. Thought everyone would enjoy...
  6. Do a search here. This subject has been disscussed to nauseum. B)
  7. Don't feel bad! Thanks for posting the pics of the new Turbo and your experience. I loved it! :D :welcome:
  8. A lot of us here are pretty lame (myself especially) when it comes to the air cooled Porsches. I would make sure I had the car inspected by an air cooled specialist. He would also help you identify years and model to seek out or stay away from. The older cars can be even more pricey to repair than the new ones so you have to do your "due dillegence". Good luck in your search and hopefully some smarter folks than me will chime in and give you some guidance. :welcome:
  9. I suppose you could replace the hose as a DIY and swing by the dealer for them to bleed you (so to speak). :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:
  10. If there is coolant in your oil your dipstick will look like it has pancake batter on it. :o Pray this is not what you find
  11. Sounds like your shift cables. Loren will probably be able to help guide you with this
  12. Your manual shows the appropriate jacking points. I wouldn't deviate from that. If you do search here you will find lots of info on raising your car.
  13. There is a video from Fabspeeds website with a good explanation video of how their intake silicon hose bypasses the secondary opening in the airbox and why it makes it sound better. The video is in the 997 section at the bottom of the page. It's basically the same as the 996. By putting the plastic cap in the additional hole you are basically doing what their product does. http://fabspeed.com/997_997S_997GT3.html
  14. I will post soon. Have to take a few more
  15. Sound only really. That opening in the airbox acts like a muffler. All the cap does is disable the muffler. The result is a better sound. More throaty but no kind of performance gains. B)
  16. Zaino for me. I have used the leather cleaner and conditioner(leather in a bottle) The Z2 and Z5 and Z6. They have scratchless towels that are great. I did the Mothers clay bar treatment (very good product) and then the Zaino swirl remover and than polish and then grand finale spray. Car looks amazing. I'll post some pics of the final result. Oh yeah I love the Rejex too! Great for the wheels and really all surfaces.
  17. I got the 2006 S Carrera. It had 18k miles when I got it. It's like a new car. Everything is spotless. I love it. It's an awesome car. Doing my first maintenance this weekend. Changing air filter and pollen filter. Only thing i have done to it is changed out the orange side markers to smoked and added the colored Porsche crest wheel caps. It's metallic black so it keeps me busy keeping it perfect. :o Not going to mod this one. Will keep for 2 years and then get the next gen
  18. Thank you for explaining what I hate about this system. The bass characteristics are very strange. I have never heard such lousy subwoofers. And as you said the lack of "precision sound control" is what amazes me as well. I will live with it and not fool with the system. I'm too afraid I'll somehow screw up the PCM. Thanks for all of your input and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the BOSE sucks. Porsche should be ashamed on a $90k car  , My Scion TC has an awesome sound system and it was a $16k car. Go figure
  19. Yes but I'm not quite sure what caused the oil/water intermix. Could have been a cracked head, Freeze plug or catastrophic water pump failure which caused severe sudden overheating. Glad you have a new engine. Sure you could sell the filter. Someone will surely buy it from you. Do you live in Pasadena?
  20. It comes as one unit. You can't just buy the flap part. Here is the link to my post when I needed to replace mine. In this link you will find the part numbers. Call Sunset and get new fastners (weird Porsche plastic rivets) as well. I think everything was about $27 bucks. Easy install. PM me if you have any questions http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...le+top+question
  21. The oil is the main thing that filters out contaminants. You would not want to run it wthout oil unless you don't care about your engine. Fabspeed states that their BMC filter is run "By all Cup Car teams". Big freakin deal. Cup car teams also rebuild the engine frequently. The oiled filters are not as efficient as the paper filters.. Just stick with the stock filter and replace it at the right intervals. You will never have to worry about your MAF etc...
  22. As you know it's a crap shoot with the early M96 engines. I had one 996 that would have run forever and another one that blew with 70k on it. I guess when you can get one that cheap (as you can today) you could do Jake Raby's IMS upgrade to have a bit more piece of mind. Also make sure the transmission works perfectly. You don't want to get whacked with a transmission replacement. ($7k.) :censored: There are many many people who have never had a problem and then the percentage that have. I don't have to tell you this but just make sure you do a leakdown test and all the other measures ( pre purchase inspection) if you decide to buy. Also consider replacing the water pump as a preventative measure. I personally will never have another Porsche without a warranty.
  23. I would say easily less than $20k I was trying to sell my 996 2000 cab with the 3.6 conversion and it was amazing what people were offering me (not very much.) I have seen cars like you described going for $17k. The poor 996. Not what she used to be....
  24. At least the dealers are consistent internationally! :clapping: Seriously, I hope you can find the problem. There are not too many things that can make the front end shake. Control arms, bushings, alignment etc.. You could have a bent wheel. Maybe that is what they are talking about..... Let us know what happens..
