  1. Just wanted to update my engine replacement project. New 3.6 engine is getting prepped in Atlanta and will arrive in L.A. a next week. Installation will happen at end of the week. Should have the car back by Sunday. I have learned a lot in the last 2 months about options in replacing your 3.4 or the option of a swap to a 3.6 (costs, pro's & con's etc..) If anyone is considering doing this swap feel free to contact me if you are in the area. I would be happy to let you drive the car and see what you think. Can't wait to get it back. Want to thank everyone on the site for all of the information and help during this process. Phillipj
  2. They look like HRE 3 piece 18's. Kind of hard to be sure from that distance. Here is a pic from their site with a similar wheel on a Ferrari. I'm sure someone else here can identify them exactly.......
  3. Thanks SA321, And thanks to everyone who responded to my post! :renntech:
  4. Great, Thank you! According to the Porsche manual the "ground" connection appears to be the airbox bolt. Is that correct?
  5. Ohay I got the rear engine cover open. I fished out the cable from the taillight. Can I charge the battery from the connections in the engine compartment? I have tried the booster and was told by RFM it could damage my control boxes so I didn't pursue it. Just need to charge the battery to get the trunk open. Thanks
  6. Didn't know that Loren, Thanks
  7. Thanks Geoff, I appreciate your offer and will PM you Phillip
  8. Unfortunetly there is no such animal in the 2000 model. I guess it took them a few years to realize adding that option would be a good idea. Thanks for your input
  9. Thanks, I guess I expected a bit too much from the maintainer. By the way the engine in my car is dead. All I need to do is get the trunk open. I'm going to be towing it next week for the new engine install.. I also tried to fish out the cable release under the taillight for the engine compartment so I could charge the battery through the terminal in the back. Couldn't find the cable for that either. I tried to find the emergency cable release under the front wheel well for the trunk but could not... Pretty rediculous that you need a charged battery to get to the dead battery in a Porsche... :o  I think this car is going to drive me to drinking more heavily... :P
  10. 2000 C2 Carrera. My battery is completely dead. Cant open trunk or engine compartment. Forgot to mention that the engine is dead so I don't need to start the car. Just need to open the trunk or engine compartment. I recently ordered the Porsche battery maintainer. I recieved it yesterday an plugged it in over night. Went to the garage this morning and nothing.... The light was still red on the power source (it supposed to turn off when there is a full charge.) This maintainer plugs into the lighter socket. I there somthing special I have to do? Does the key need to be in the "accessory" position to make it work? The instructions just say to plug into lighter socket.. Any suggestions? Thanks
  11. regarding the thud... Check to make sure your wheel lugs are tight. I had that happen and the mechanic forgot to torque my lugs  Good place to start......
  12. For the record I do not believe it is inevitable that every M96 will grenade. As Jake says, more do not explode than do explode. My feeling about Raby's rebuilds is that I'm glad it is there as an option besides a new engine. It was not that long ago when Conventional Wisdom said that the M96 was not rebuildable. And that Porsche would maybe work a deal on new or rebuild engines. Excellence magazine has done a better job than any other mag to remove the Urban Legend aspects of 986s and 996s. And RennTech has been a great forum for discussions about it. Well said!
  13. That's awesome.. I hope you get that problem sorted...
  14. Kind of a sad commentary that many P car owners are "waiting" for their engine to explode. Although I did lose my engine recently :( I'm the only one that has had an engine let go amongst all of my friends that have Porsches. So in my case I'm the exception. Although I think it's great what Jake Raby is doing to these engines It seems that it's causing a lot of people to think that every 996 and Boxster is a time bomb. Just my two cents. :renntech:
  15. Elliiot, I believe you can fix your problem by cleaning your idle valve. On my 996 it is on the left lower side of the throttle body and has a switch attatched to it. It comes off with two alan or hex screws. It gets filled with carbon. Get some carb cleaner and get all the carbon out. Most of it will come out with some light taps. Get it as clean as you can. Make sure it is dry and reassemble. I had exactly the same problem and RFM (a moderator here) suggested this fix. I took me about 30 minutes and the car idled beautifully. Also didn't cost me a cent. :clapping: Good luck!! :D
  16. I know.... but it wouldn't be the first time I wasted my money lol! Actually I was interested in anyone's input that had done the X51 mod in their 996. From what I have heard if you add the X51 airbox, headers and Throttle body (along with the X51 reprogramming to your DME) is does make the car perform better as far as throttle response, drivabillity ETC.. The only thing different to the factory 996 X51 would be the cams.... Phiillipj
  17. HMMMM I think your mechanic missed the most important tests: 1. leakdown test 2. compression test if *any* variance here... especially in leakdown test... walk away from it. Also I wouldn't say that a clutch will only last 50k miles. My last clutch was at 72k and stilll had a lot of life. It just depends on how you treat your clutch. I totally agree with Pete on the leakdown test......
  18. I called Suncoast yesterday and asked them if the 997 CF X51 airbox would work on a 996. He said yes with a modification to the smog pump location (which they sell a bracket for.) Has anyone done this on their 996? If so how did you fabricate the additional air opening in the engine cover? To be honest I want it because it looks so cool........ :D Phillipj
  19. I'm using Roock. We have got to know eachother quite well with all of this engine hunting nonsense. He gives a one year warranty on the parts and labor of the conversion. Hopefully there will be no "issues". I've had enough "issues" to last me quite some time  I'll keep you updated
  20. Wayne, How much did you pay for the carbon fiber X51 airbox & throttle body and where did you purchase it? Thanks! Phillip
  21. My brand new 3.6 Engine will be installed the week of the 19th. Since I'm spending so much money I decided to Gold Leaf the chassis while I'm at it.   Seriously, Can't wait to get the car back with warranties.................. :clapping: Anyone who is looking for a used engine beware of "Midwest Auto Recycling". From what I can tell they never really had the engine I purchased from them and just used my money for the month.....Nice  There is a 2004 X-51 complete engine here in L.A. at a Porsche tech with 15k miles on it for $9k and no core. You may be able to negotiate the price if you have cash. If someone is interested in it PM me and I can give you the contact information. Thanks everyone for their input on this subject. :renntech: Phillipj
