  1. This may help. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...ing+replacement
  2. Remember that you will need a special Porsche tool if you remove the cam covers. If you don't HAVE the tool DO NOT REMOVE THE COVERS! Sometimes you can just remove the bolts(one at a time) and re- seal those and this will cure your problem...
  3. Just got a new client who has a 997 GT3 with Ceramic brakes. He is on top of the waiting list for the 2010 GT3. He took me for a drive today and then let me drive it. Wow... :jump: That is an amazing Porsche. I had goose bumps after I got out of it. The smoth power band and the sound are incredible. (not to mention the stopping power of those brakes.) I envy you GT3 owners... :clapping: Hopefully I can acquire one in the near future!
  4. Jake Raby told me that no matter how much you try to clean them (the radiators) they will never be the same, As we know heat is the main enemy of engines so it's not that much of an expense in the big picture. There are some chemicals that are effective in cleaning the radiators but they are not legal in California. My car was running hot even in cold weather. That is definetly a problem. No I haven't replaced the coolant lines. I hope I don't have to. I have heard that I will live with a muddy coolant resivoir for the rest of the cars life. No way to get all the oil out unless you replace everything. At this point maybe I'll get Carbon fiber/kevlar rims and have the THE most expensive 996 that isn't worth anything (except to me lol!) I'm starting to feel like one of those kids that puts $70k of mods into his Acura...... I'm getting a new canvas top too because of an incident at another shop (LONG STORY) But I know the owner very well and his insurance is going to pay for the top. So at least I will have somthing new I didn't have top pay for :clapping: I'll update on Friday when I get the car back. Phillip
  5. So maybe I will just pass on the whole jack idea lol!!   Seriously that is really good advice. I grew around race cars and race shops all my life and my father instilled safety and quality whenever you were under the car. I wasn't going to cheap the jackstands. I just wondered how much floor jack I would really need. Thanks for all the great input on this subject. It's good to hear what people own and their experience. Phillipj
  6. Just to update my saga. B) After the engine let go in late November it sat for 2 months with that oil/water pancake batter in the system. The car is having trouble cooling and the coolant is muddy with oil again  We thought we might be able to use the original radiators but that is not the case. I have talked to quite a few people and they have told me that if that gunk sits in the radiators for any length of time the radiators will never work properly. I was warned by Jake Raby (I spoke to hime before I decided to go with the conversion) that I would probably need new radiators after a intermix problem. So there you go....Another expense.... :o The car is getting the final electronics tune up (and a bunch of other little issues) and new radiators today. Should have the car back by Friday. So if your engine does let go (and I hope it doesn't) and has an intermix issue I would suggest flushing the system immediately. Maybe that will save you some expense for new radiators if you intend to replace the motor. Update again after I get the car back. Should be awesome.. :clapping: :renntech:
  7. Can I ask why? For the amount of $ you are oing to spend fabricating to make the Turbo work you could buy a Turbo for less. Method to your madness???
  8. I want to purchase a floor jack. I need one that will work with my lowered car. I went on to Sears and looked at th Craftsmen jacks. They looked okay but the reviews were terrible. Almost everyone had complaints about the under $200 jacks failing or spilling oil on the ground. (I've already had my engine do that :D ) Can anyone recommend what they have and how much $ I will need to spend to get a quality low-slung jack? Kind of on a budget so money is an issue. Thanks in advance. Phillipj
  9. I think that the emergency release cable maybe on the other side of the car for UK (PHD) cars. I just thought of that and edited my post. Thanks Loren
  10. Do a search hear on "emergency hood release cable" It's underneath your right front wheel liner near the headlight (on U.S.cars) Will your engine compartment open? If it will there is a positive terminal (location should be in your manual under "jump starting") You can hook up a jump battery or charger to that terminal and ground to the body. That will give will give you enough juice to pop your trunk to get to your battery. If your rear lid is locked as well the cable release is underneath your rear drivers side taillight (on U.S. cars). You can use a piece of wire or a long paper clip. Bend a "hook end" and fish around for it. You can lift the taillight up a bit with your hand to make the gap larger. Use a flashlight to illuminate the inside and you may be able to spot the wire. The use the snare you created to grab it. This cable will pop the engine compartment. Maybe someone else here can clarify the location with a Euro spec car. I did this with my 996 popped my trunk. Success Phillipj
  11. :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: I have to say you have created one of the coolest Boxters I have seen. The body kit is awesome and I love the white! Congratulations it looks outstanding!
  12. Might be better to take the $1200 and go to Cabo San Lucas for a week :D
  13. I stand corrected.... I checked the Fabspeed site and it appears that the 996 and 997 is a totally different design for the way the tips connect. Fabspeed has these. They look a lot nicer than the stock(to me.)
  14. :D :D :D :D I think any of the aftermarket makers (like Fabspeed, Tubi etc.) have the 996 single chrome (or polished) tips that would work on the 997. Give them a call and ask them.. I had their (Fabspeed) tips on my old 996 and they were sweet. Your post made me laugh....
  15. Porsche dealers in my area are complete worthless snobs (I'm being nice here) who don't know anything about their cars unless I tell them about it. They are really good at doing credit checks and taking your credit card though! An oil change is $140.00 through an indie. The dealer techs must be specially trained at removing drain bolts (which is no easy feat!) Hence the additional cost.... :D
  16. There are always some crooks on Autotrader and elswhere. That was one of many that I chose for about that price. Just amazing how prices have come down. My wife wants a MBZ SLK. I found a 2005 with 8000k miles for $20,800 at a dealer with a warranty!! The guy was begging me to buy it. The freakin car is brand new... :o How come prices are never like this when I'm buying a car???? Oh well I will enjoy my over priced 996 no matter what I could sell it for :renntech: At least it looks really expensive even though it's not lol!!!
  17. Found this on Autotrader. You could probably get it for less with cash. Scary..... http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=p...;standard=false
  18. I haven't had a chance to check out the car yet but pics look good. Not very much wear at all on the seats, coupled with the fact that approx. 20K miles per year implies that mostly highway miles. I will look at car this weekend and bring my trusty Durametric along. If all looks good then will get Indie shop to do complete checkout. I figure $30K + $10-$15K for engine replacement gives me a 997 with "new" engine and 2 years warranty; not bad considering you can barely get a 987S Cayman for that price. I still can't figrue out why the asking price would only be 30K?? Is this an angry soon to be divorced spouse selling the car? That is at least $10k lower than it should be. Also why do you think you will need a new engine? Is there a problem with the current engine? If not that engine could easily run for another 60k miles without a problem. If you are buying the car with a blown engine then offer the person much less than 30k....
  19. Does anyone know if the 997 MY05 water pump will fit on earlier 996 3.6's?
  20. A Re Man 3.6 (pre 2006) is $8500 from Porsche with a $2800 core charge. Installation should be around $2,000 to $2,500 (from a good INDIE) I'm sure you could negotiate the install price with the dealer as well. You will have a 2 year warranty on the new engine. You can buy the 2006+ 3.6 or 3.8 (with the new IMS design) for $8000 but the core charge is like $6000 or something crazy like that. Call the boys at Sunset or Suncoast Porsche and they can give you all the up to date prices and core charges Can I ask why the 05 997 with 66k miles is only $30k? What is wrong with it? $30k is very low even in this economy!! Phillipj
  21. I have to agree, I spent way more $ maintaining my previous BMW's than on my Porsches (except for that nasty engine failure recently.) I consider that a "one off" event and still would rather drive and own the Porsche any day. I'm afraid I will never go back.. :D
  22. mine went on my '99 996 c2 at 56k miles. happened 2 weeks after buying the car and spending another $6k on interior stuff for track days. DE event. mechanic told me oil starvation in the carousel. anyway, car has been sitting for 2 years and i'm ready to get it running agin. came across this thread while searching for optins. can anyone attest to whether a 3.6 is an option with mech throttle? Yes, I believe you just have to switch out the throttle body. The 3.4 throttle body will work on the 3.6. (But I'm not 100% sure with the mech throttle so I will find out for you.) phillip
