  1. Would be good insurance. Water pump failure is what caused mine to blow....
  2. I believe only the dealer can tell you (if it was done by Porsche.) But the reman Porsche engines have an additional letter or number at the end of their serial number stamped on the engine. Once you have that information you can look at the serial number on the engine of the car you are considering. Do a search here and you should find the thread with that information.

  4. Even salvage yards give a 6 month warranty. You should be fine if it is something serious
  5. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear about the oil on the dipstick. Yes "mayo" on the filler tube is common from condensation. When mine blew the dipstick was covered in foamy goo. The same substance in the coolant res. Sounds like you are in good shape if your oil is clear. :clapping: I'm very happy for you.!!! Like Deckman said.. If it wasn't you would having a "bad day". :o Good luck when it goes to your mechanic and let us know what the diagnosis was.. Hopefully an easy fix for you..
  6. Look for water/oil intermix in your oil. If you have "pancake batter" on your dipstick she is dead. If not you should be okay. Is there oil in your coolant? Check that first. If you don't have intermix your issue could not be too bad.
  7. These swaps are really a "tuner" project. It's not as simple as installing the engine and have it work perfectly right out of the box. If you did the swap with a mechanic with little experience in swapping to a 3.4 you are bound to have issues. There are quite a few folks here on this forum that have done these swaps. Keep asking questions and someone should chime in to help you out. If you still don't get any answers PM me and I will get you some numbers of people to contact.
  8. Yes I thought about the tires. They are a bit worn but have at least 3 to 5k left on them. I would not like to replace them yet. On my old BMW M3 I had this problem a lot. It would go away when I put new tires on. The problem was back as soon as the tires would wear the shimy would come back. Which of course meant that the tires were not the root cause of the problem Interesting that no one has metioned bushings or any mechanical issues. I guess I will have the Front tires balanced first.. Thanks! :cheers:
  9. Okay now that I have my car back I have been driving it quite a bit. I have noticed that at about 65mph I get a shimy in the steering wheel. It goes away at 75 and re occurs after. It's very annoying..... To start the car has 19 inch rims. I know that the 996 was never really designed to have 19's. What should I start with? Alignment? The car has 70k on it so I'm sure the bushings are quite worn. In my BMW's it was always the control arm bushings..Is it the same in Porsches? Is there an upgrade if it is the bushings? DIY? Before I start to tackle this issue I wanted to get some input from any of you that have dealt with a similar problem. Thanks in advance.. Phillipj
  10. It sounds like the Variocam. Around 3k rpm is when it kicks in. you should cantact Todd (member name "Tholyoak") on this board. He has done many Boxster conversions and is very knowledgable. He should be able to help you sort it out.

  12. Sounds like your ignition switch. Interesting that it's acting up even without the key in the ignition. They do some very strange things when they go bad. Great DIY here if you do a search.
  13. Vrex, I had similar smoking issues with my old 996. First do a test to see if it may be your AOS. Take off your oil cap while the car is running. Is it extremely difficult to take off? If you can get it off place your hand over the filler tube and see if there is a lot of suction. A little is normal but a lot could mean that your AOS is bad. . Next check your throttle body. Open the butterfly and see if there is any oil built up there. If there is oil it's another sign your AOS is bad. On the other hand I had a similar situation to yours on my 996........ It was creating the same smoking symptoms that led me to believe it was the AOS. I did the oil-fill suction test (normal) and looked for oil in the throttle body (there was none.) Once I discovered there was over-fill in the crankcase (after an oil change) I drained out about a quart and all smoking issues went away. Just my experience. Phillipj

  16. Got my car back yesterday. New radiators, 3.6 air flow meter, coolant and thermostat. :P Electronics are 80 % there. Will go meet the tech on more time next week and have him hook up the laptop for a final tweak. :D Car is awesome. It runs really smooth and is very quick. Now (after some tip from Orient Express) I will start the compulsive/ obsessive cleaning of the entire car. I get the new canvas top installed next month (I'm not paying for that and has nothing to do with the conversion)) and the car will be 80% perfect. After this extensive investment I plan on keeping it for a long time. Have to save $ now to replace the front and rear bumpers and I will be done.. I will post pics as soon as the weather gets nicer.   17. I don't believe it is posible to have a LWFW without the rattle in the 996. Brad Roberts would be a good person to ask
  18. Silly me for biting. The M96 is after all, a high stress motor extracting lotsa bhp for its displacement, and the one in mine make's it a blast (hopefully not literally) to drive, so I can't be too hard on Porsche AG. Unless it blowed up one day...... :cheers: (just playin)
  19. . If it's only one second definetly your starter. The starter is not an easy DIY. Unless your a better wrench than I. :notworthy: My indie charged me close to $600 with labor if I recall correctly
  20. I'm 26 so I'm still invincible :P . The speed wasn't that scary but an suv in the left lane forced me to change lanes suddenly at 147. Things come up on you way faster than one would expect at that speed. All I could think about was how stupid I was and that I could have killed some unsuspecting guys family on there way home from the zoo. I haven't even come close to that speed since. In fact I just paid my 14mph over ticket this morning. However I'm sure someone's had the guts to really flog one of these puppies in the US. I totalled my prized C2 and tore up my shoulders real bad going fast on public roads. (Bounced like a pinball through my favorite cement "go fast" tunnel at 115mph.) I should have been killed. You have no idea what it feels like to hit a solid object at over 100mph. It's quite frightening. Even if you are 26 please don't do that (for your sake (and your cars.) and of course innocent bystanders....
  21. Agree with pk2....Sounds like your starter to me. My 996 did the same thing and it was the starter. But 3 seconds sounds like a long time....
  22. I actually contacted those guys and they do rent them out. However, when I called them earlier this week, there was a waiting list of 2 weeks. They could not confirm that the tool actually works on the boxster, but stated it had been rented by "several porsche guys" w/o any complaints, so the inference is that it does. There is also a DIY on this site on removing your hubs. I couldn't find it but if you go to that link and contact the member who is refferred to there I'm sure he can help you
