  1. Man this sounds really sketchy.. I would demand some answers. Like JFP said... Reman engines come complete and have a 2 year warranty! Timing belt? Maybe the jets in the carbs were clogged as well :o..
  2. Lorne, This is the man you need to speak to. Tholyoak (his screen name.) http://www.renntech..../4060-tholyoak/ He has done many swaps and knows the correct way to do it. I had a 3.6 put in my 2000 996. It was not done properly and it was a real nightmare. It's going to require an ECU upgrade, new instrument cluster and some rewiring to get everything to work properly. Do your research before you get involved in this. It's definitely not "plug and play."
  3. Totally depends on your dealer. Headers will not void your warranty if they are Porsche headers (aka X-51.) I have an extended CPO warranty on my 07 Turbo. My service manager knows I have flashed the CPU and I have a Tech Art exhaust. He looks the other way because I have a good relationship with him. I have had the car in a couple times with no issues.. Some dealers will keep your warranty in good standing if you let them do the mods. Like the other poster said... Check with your dealer.. They are all different..
  4. Wow.. 2 totally different cars. If you get M6 without a warranty you are asking for trouble. Even more so than with the 06 Porsche. But I would get a warranty on that too. The M6 has more power but the 911 beats the hell out it handling wise. I guess you have to drive both and see which one scratches your itch. If you get the 06 911 get the "S" or "4s" with the sport chrono and sport exhaust and the 6 speed manual.. You can get a really good deal on an 06 now if you are patient. Hard to say about resale.. But I do know that the M5 and M6 have not held their value very well. That being said who knows what will happen to early 997 's prices when the 998 comes out... BMW and a Porsche... Totally different cars... Guess it comes down to personal taste. I personally think the M6 is an ugly car. But that's just me... I had one of the first M6's in 1988. By todays standards underpowered but that was an awesome car (until the CPU kept dying.) The porsche is more viceral and requires more of the driver.. The BMW is more forgiving but a big heavy car. I personally like the Porsche better. Let us know what you decide!
  5. OMG.... Everything about that is soo wrong...... The Porsche Gods will not be pleased.
  6. Wow that's great info... Thanks for that!:clapping:
  7. You can get it rebuilt for much less than a new engine. Porsche will not pay for a new engine so you can forget about that. If you were in So Call I can recommend a a couple places that are great. Sorry to hear about your plight... I have been there....:censored: There are quite a few folks here from Northern CA that should be able to point you in the right direction.
  8. I can't help you with the part numbers but if you call Sunset or Suncoast I'm sure they can get you what you need. But parts departments are very helpful and have great prices.
  9. No difference between the 06 and 07. The sports chrono will not present any problems. Make sure to finds a car with the Sport exhaust. You'll be very happy you did. I'm a firm believer in warranties. Try to find a Porsche CPO car. Make sure that it is the FULL CPO warranty. (there are two kinds.) I had an 06 Carrera S and LOVED it. Never had one issue with it.. Good luck!
  10. You are an amazing father to want to get your son a 996. But here's my 2 cents.. I would have killed myself in a 911 when I was 16. No question I would be dead. I learned to drive in 40 hp VW bugs. I learned to drift in a bug. All of my friends had VW's. When it rained we would go look for wet spots to slide in. I crashed all of my bugs but at a speed that that was not too high lol! But I learned to drive and what "over the limit" meant. I was not more or less of an idiot that any other 16 year old. But I know if I had a 250hp sports car things would have gotten ugly. I have to second the other poster and say start out with something with less power. He needs to learn how to drive. How about something cheap so he will appreciate getting the Porsche later? A Honda? A Scion? If it has to be a Porsche idea of an older Boxster is a good one. Not too much power and very forgiving handling. Driving school is a brilliant idea. Once he has proved that he can be responsible and handle the Boxster (and his hormones) then you could move up to the 996. I'm not trying to bust your sons balloon but I have a friend who thought it would be cool to buy his young son a Cobra Mustang. Sadly he (the boy) was killed street racing the first month.. When you are a 16 year old male you are stupid.. period... Everyone in his high school is going to want to race him in that car. Do think he will be mature enough to handle that? Just my two cents. Whatever you decide you are very cool parents! Just be careful what you give him to play with.. A Porsche at 16? Maybe not a good idea... All the best
  11. eva350, I was not dissing the Fabspeed box. It was my own observation that I couldn't see how the design could prevent the engine from getting hot air. That's great you are happy with it. All the best..
  12. Congratulations as well! Nice to see a new engine without Cosmoline on it. Enjoy!:clapping:
  13. 2005 was the worst engine build year for Porsche in their history. Many 05's have had problems. In 06 the engines were upgraded and much less prone to problems.. Glad you're going to get your car back!
  14. I'd still like to know exactly what the Hell your aftermarket stereo has to do with their inability to read the DME................... agreed....
  15. Great news! :clapping: As it should be with a CPO car for cryin out loud...
  16. Grabe talaga! Sabi tagalog ako! I actually spent a lot of time in the Philippines from 1997 to 2003. I still have a condo in Makati. That's great your getting the Softronic flash. You may want to add a BMC air filter to go with it. It actually does make a difference. Let us know how you like it.
  17. I'm sorry to hear what happened.:cursing: At least the damage is relatively superficial. I say go for the updated 997 look. I can't see how it would hurt the re-sale value. It might even enhance it. Some die hard purists may disagree. Just my 2 cents.. Keep us updated on what you decide to do. The 996 GT3 bumper is an option as well.
  18. Do a search here. I know there is a thread regarding the Softronic flash. I have the Softronic on my 997 Turbo and it's awesome. I also have friends with the Softronic on their 997 Carrera's and they love it. Makes the car more responsive and increases the Redline. Plus you keep your stock map on your laptop in case you need to return the car to stock. Ingat ka
  19. The 997-2 is a good airbox. The Fabspeed CF system will allow your car to suck hot air (heat shield or no heat shield). Maybe just go with a BMC filter in the stock box. Don't know about the X pipe.. If you flash the car go with the Softronic. It is the most flexible and you can keep your stock map in your laptop in case you need to return it to stock... As for the Exhaust the X-51 headers were a great mod for the 997-1. I don't know if the manifold design changed on the new DFI engine.. You could call the guys at Sunset or Suncoast and find out.. Hope this helps..
  20. Unless you really drive the car hard I would say to stick with the OEM clutch. You can get a kit online for a good price As far a the RMS seal goes if it isn't leaking most people say to leave it alone. Your tranny oil is good for 80k miles. If you do change it make sure you stick with the Porsche recommended oils. Lots of people have had issues when using other brands. Hope this helps..
  21. I know that it is a pain in the butt to replace the filler pipe. I believe it is easiest to do it with the engine out... Yeah I know..:cursing: Do a search here. I believe there are some threads on this project.. Good luck and become a contributor!
  22. They are actually saying that the aftermarket audio may void your warranty on the engine?????? Are you freakin serious? You have to fight this my friend... Do you have a good relationship with your dealer? My servivce manager at my dealer wouldn't dream of pulling that kind of crap with me...
