  1. It's best to ask several dealers if it's covered or not. I've seen time and time again where one dealer will state the part is not covered and the next one does under good will. Brakes are a grey area as is with them being considered a "consumable item". If the rotor thickness is still within limits just get them resurfaced. Vibrations/shimmys under braking loads can be caused from other things then just brake rotors.... it is often incorrectly diagnosed and the result of worn/seized suspension/brake components.
  2. Not sure on a 987 but on the 986 the siren and tilt sensor are located near the left side of the battery as viewed from the drivers seat. The UK spec cars had a sperate siren for the alarm while the US spec cars used a small horn for the alarm. I've no idea as to the wiring harness......
  3. Yes they can fail and sometimes the trigger wheel gets dirty and gives incorrect readings. If they are working I wouldn't go about messing with them...... if it aint broke, don't fix it!
  4. Sounds like the light assembly isn't inserted correctly, try removing it and reinstalling the unit. Also the retaining clip that hold the electrical connector inside the fender that mates to the headlight sometimes breaks resulting in a poor contact and in a rare case you can have a poor ground path. Do a search on here and you'll find pics of retaining clip and connectors.
  5. The headlight switch is known to be a problem also.
  6. Glad it isn't anything too serious.... you'll back on the road in no time.
  7. Sorry Glyn I can't remember if the speedo was reading or not anymore. We couldn't believe it didn't make a noise as well....... only kinda rumbled when you rev'd the hell out of it.
  8. That was the odd thing when the CV joint broke..... it was as quiet as a grave, even when we put it in first gear and let the clutch out. With the broken metal bits in there I couldn't believe it didn't make a sound. We could see the axle shaft turning in the joint and it did start to vibrate/rumble when we reved it up. Whatever it turns out to be I hope it's an easy fix.
  9. Had a similar problem on an Audi..... turned out to be a CV joint. The joint failed but didn't damage the rubber boot so everything looked ok at first.
  10. I don't know about the PCM opition, but it can be turned off using the PIWIS as Loren has stated.
  11. You often find swarf caught in the filter/sumps of a higher mileage engine, doesn't always mean that things are going south. The photo's look like grinding marks to me, I've seen these before in other engines and are done to remove casting seams. I don't see how this would cause a mis-fire. Please keep us posted as to the outcome.
  12. This is a long shot, I have one customer who drives on a gravel road to and from his house everyday- appox 20km/trip- his '99 boxster started making a squeal noise when hot which was coming for inside the bell housing. A very fine dust had collected and we just hosed it off, sparying water into the bell housing and the noise has not returned so far. I can't say for sure what was causing the noise... possibly the release brng. Best have a closer look at that water pump.
  13. I would bet good money that it is the oil seperator. Here is an easy fast test.... when it's making this noise, open the rear trunk and remove the oil dip-stick. If the noise goes away it's the oil seperator... the seperator and J-tube have been updated to a newer part that is supposed to have a longer service life. It's a straight forward, easy DIY project. Best of luck!
  14. The Ipod works because it transmits a FM signal to the factory head unit. How are you going to transmit an FM signal from a aftermarket DVD/Navigation unit if the fatory unit isn't in the car?? If I understand what your saying, it's that you want to remove the factory MOST unit and install an aftermarket unit in it's place. Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying?? There is no way to install an aftermarket unit into a MOST system that I am aware of without awhole lot of work/time/money and hassel. Hope this is of some help.
  15. It is possible that spilt oil is burning off the exhaust, sometimes the smell can last for weeks. Take it for good long, hard drive to really get the exhaust upto temperature and see if that cures the problem. Best to check the fluid levels before hand just to be safe.
  16. TBS is Techincal Service Bulletin. It deals with know issues and how to resolve said issues, it is not a recall or campaign as far as I understand.
  17. No extra wiring is needed for the climate control unit.... the factory wiring is long enough for the move.
  18. I'm no stereo expert by any means but I can't see how what you purpose would work. I'm not aware of anyway around this problem as of yet. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can chime in.
  19. Several of my customer have asked Porsche to help with costs for the airbag update with no success. I'm not sure what Porsche considers a recall.... one example I have is they have paid for the parts needed for the 944 fuel lines while the customer pays for the labor, it didn't matter year or mileage in those cases.
  20. I'm not really sure what could be making a noise from that part of the engine. Does the engine produce good oil pressure? Have you removed the dist. for inspection? Perhaps one of the advance weights spring has broken and it's rattling around at that RPM. Just a shot in the dark..... could you post a sound clip of the noise in question?
  21. I've not tried this on a Tiptronic but VW uses a very similar transaxle(valve body/ECU mapping) and when we have shifting problems the first thing to do is reset the adaption settings in the ECU. I've seen this procedure cure many simple problems that have been caused by anything from low fluid level that caused cavitation to low battery voltage/battery replacement issues. This also has to be done in relation with the throttle body/kick down switch adaption. I hope this is of some help.
  22. It sounds very loud to me, louder then any column bushing I've ever come across...... are you sure the noise can't be heard from outside of the car?? Sound can travel through components and be very misleading. Try standing outside the car well reaching through the window and turning the wheel and let us know what you find.
  23. It sounds to me like a suspension joint making the noise but it could be the upper strut mounts. Noises like this are sometimes hard to locate as the sound can travel through components making it rather hard to pinpoint. Purchase a mechanics stethoscope and get a friend to turn the wheel while you have a listen at all the suspension joints.... sometimes you can even feel the joint in question vibrate more then the others.
  24. Nik- I've never tested for a draw through the fuse block like you describe so don't know if it's a valid procedure or not. With the Neg. cable dissconnected, do the signal lamps flash or just the siren? Could it be possible that the alarm has it's own power supply? I'll do some more reading to see if I can dig anything up. Sorry I can't be of more help right now. 540ma is an excessive draw but it could be the way you tested for it. By the way... are you in the UK and if so what part?
  25. When you look at the bulb through the lense does it appear to be seated correctly? Perhaps someone has installed the bulb socket wrong. I'm not aware of any way to adjust/aim that bulb.
