  1. No worries. Most ppl can't spell that :) No idea why the wires are broken. Maybe someone worked around that area before like changing the starter "y" cable or some rodents chewed on them.
  2. Note if you reconnect battery power with the airbag disconnected, it will trip the airbag light, which can only be reset by Durametric or alike.
  3. This is what I was going to offer you but you already tried it. Perhaps you need to keep monitoring it with Torque for a while to see if sometimes you don't see the lean condition when the pump is running. Just like John said, could be a sticky valve #15 and #18 in this diagram. http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-parts/hardparts.php?dir=986-97-04&section=108-06
  4. He said IMS broke then it cost him $17k. Most likely he meant an engine rebuild or used engine.
  5. Did you start the car cold and get on the highway and drive 20 miles all the way? If so, it's possible when you stop at the light, the engine is still not warmed up completely so the DME commands the SAI to turn ON. Then the DME checks the O2 sensors and sees no extra oxygen present, it flags the SAI code. Do you hear the SAI pump running for the first couple of minutes when you start the car in the morning? Do you have a scanner that can read O2 sensor voltage?
  6. That's a bummer. Really thought you had it. My alternator (on my '03 996) doesn't hum after key is remved for sure. Do you still get double beep when you arm the car? That indicates something is not "closed" or not ready. Also, you tried removed all the fuses before but the drain was still there. With all the fuses removed, I would think the instrument cluster is not powered so it shouldn't supply the 3.7v to the alternator either. Seems to me if you unplug the skinny wire (3.7v) at the back of the alternator, the drain will stop? To further diagnose it, I think you best bet is scan the car with a Porsche scanner to check for any error codes, especailly security related ones.
  7. I have the same problem and I can't agree more. I have no solutions to offer other than replacing them. I just didn't get around to do that yet.
  8. I doubt that small amount of overfill will make the RMS leak....unfortunately there's no way to tell if it's the RMS or IMS until the transmission is removed.
  9. Look forward to see what you find tomorrow :) I truly hope no hum = no excessive drain.
  10. Good luck and do let us know if that fixed the issue for good.
  11. Another thread about the cable here http://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/764630-updated-alternator-starter-cable-4.html
  12. That cable can give you low charging voltage (<13.2)v or hard start problem. Lots of people have that replaced with the latest updated cable. The cable can look shinny but it still has significant voltage drop. Make sure you check out this thread for a very simple way to remove the cable without undoing the a/c compressor. http://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/870715-alternator-starter-cable-replacement-simplified.html
  13. Maybe cut the cable or remove the starter together with the cable? Best opportunity to replace that notorious starter/alternator cable.
  14. In addition to what you plan to test with the starter, I would also bench test the "new" alternator by connecting a 12v and ground to it (just lke when it's installed in the car) and measure the current drain.
  15. Did you check if the coolant temp sensor and intake air temp sensor report the correct readings during hard start?
  16. 1) The drip is not good. Like Kbrandsma said, it could be RMS. However, it could also be the IMS, Either way, you need to drop the transmission to find out. Note s leaking IMS can also be a precursor of IMSB failure. 2) Probably just an old o-ring from previous install 3) That's not uncommon. Usually the AOS cannot clean up the oil vapor 100% so the residual will be accumulated at the bottom of the intake plenum and then leak out to the rubber sleeves.
  17. Thanks for closing this thread and glad you had it sorted. It's interesting sensors on both bank 1 and bank 2 fail simultaneously (assuming you didn't have any CEL before). Did they use genuine O2 sensors from Porsche?
  18. Also, you can at least check the fuse for the radio. For the airbag light, fastest way is to read the code (with a Porsche scanner) and go from there. Could be the driver's side airbag, or the driver's seat buckle, etc. that were unplugged when there was still power or they just forgot to plug them back in. Note the airbag light won't go away until it's reset manually using a Porsche scanner.
  19. No, the coolant drain plug and washer are much smaller.
  20. BTW, since it's e-gas, have you tried throttle body recalibration yet?
  21. I see so you have a lot less to check. For the FP gauge, I meant wait till the engine is warm where you expect to see a hard start, then hook it up or it was hooked up that way already? How about the evap purge valve then?
  22. A few more things maybe worth checking: - vacuum leak - evap purge valve leak - idle stabilizer needs cleaning - fuel pressure when it's struggling to start - fuel filter? - fuel injector(s) leaking
