  1. This is A Bosch MAF for '02 and up 996 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B001CO317M/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470169620&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=98660612501
  2. Amazon in US has great price for Bosch MAF sensors. How about amazon.uk?
  3. I'm the same as Loren except I run Motul x-cess 5w-40 oil ($7/L from amazon shipped to the door - four 5gal jugs), which is also Porsche approved.
  4. Exactly and based on this description " While driving in low gears (manual trans), a loud grinding and popping sound began off and on for a few minutes. Then engine died. ", it would be wise not to start the engine again as it may create more damage. I think that's why John suggested pushing the car (not bump start it) just to see if the engine is seized. I was going to suggest removing the serpentine belt and hand rotate the crank and all the pulleys and see if any of them is seized. Pushing the car is a lot easier and faster as a first check. Having said all that it seems the engine ran (ran fine?) for 3 minutes after the bump star. That seems to rule out a seized engine. I would remove the serpentine belt and hand spin all the pulleys.
  5. Best is to put it in the 6th gear (easier on both the transmission and the engine) and push the car FORWARD only. You don't want to spin the engine in reverse direction.
  6. "a loud grinding and popping sound began off and on for a few minutes. Then engine died." This does not sound too good (no pun intended) and could be an indication of engine problem. When you said it will not start, did you mean it will not crank or the engine will crank but it will not catch? I second Joe's and John's questions above.
  7. Ah, it all makes sense now. Glad it was just the battery. Those cables while not expensive, they are a pain to get to.
  8. Glad to hear you got it sorted but I must say I was misled by this description :) "I don't think that it's a battery issue -- I have a new Optima Red Top and use a "battery tender". I've also tried a different battery with same results. "
  9. Good job! Glad you got it sorted now. Just to be clear, you bought a new Bosch MAF sensor and that was bad and you replaced it with another new Bosch unit?
  10. Btw, please check my write-up here
  11. If your voltage regulator is bad, you should have problem at cold start as well. Electrical resistance increases on corroded contacts as temperature increases. The starter inside can have open windings or corroded solenoid contacts once warmed/hot. Mechanically it can also seize when it's too hot.
  12. The symptoms point to a bad starter or starter y-cable and other cables. The cables can be diagnosed with a voltmeter when a slow cranking condition occurs. You can't always visually id a bad cable. It could look shinny but still fails. The only way is voltage drop tests.
  13. Maybe the floor mat was in the way before? :)
  14. Glad to hear you got it sorted! I always recommend ppl to check fuses C1 to C4 and E1. SOP for no crank/start condition :)
  15. The a/c, ABS, instrument codes seem to point to the CAN bus. I hope John will chime in soon.
  16. Possible since you said it's very hot. I've never used them but seems like they can diagnose your DME for $75. Sounds reasonable to me. http://www.ecudoctors.com/ecu-fault.html
  17. You still have the crank position sensor code despite a new sensor so I think you need to check the wiring between the sensor and the DME. The other misfire codes are probably due to the crank and cam sensor issues but they are only on bank 2 so that may indicate something bank 2 specific. Anyway, you will need to address thise sensor codes first before the misfires.
  18. Looks like your bank 1 cam sensor/circuit is also bad. I don't have the wiring diagram of your car but the cam sensor should have 3 pins - 5v, ground, and signal. You can unplug the sensor and wIth key ON engine OFF, the 5v pin should get 5v.
  19. Hi Loren, Can this code (for DME7.2?) mean either too lean or too rich and you really need to look at the fuel trims to confirm? The code description says "Above Limit or Below Limit".
  20. Ok I just checked on my '03 996. When I turned on my a/c, the radiator fans come on as LOW speed setting.
  21. Um, I need to check but I think the fans are really loud when running at high speed and it definitely sounds louder than when the a/c is ON (and the coolant is not overly hot).
  22. You need to verify the radiator fans are working in both low speed and high speed settings. Durametric can activate the fans to help you troubleshoot. You can turn on the a/c and the fans should be on at low speed. Then put your hands on the ground about 1 foot right in front of each front wheel to feel the fans blowing.
