  1. The 8 Disc European Map set has been updated, the latest revision date is 08.2009
  2. PCM2 CD Mechanism Swap - Due to ejecting problems PCM2 CD Mechanism Swap This tutorial will show how I sourced and replaced the CD Mechanism in my 996 PCM2. I replaced the mechanism due to problems ejecting the CD and intermittent problems reading the Sat Nav disk. I couldn't find any reference to this on the internet so hopefully someone else will benefit from this tutorial Please note I actually took the photo's in reverse, i.e. when putting everything back together. Step 1 Remove the Fascia - A description of this is already in the for Author Yoz Category Carrera (996) - Common Fixes and Repairs Submitted 07/17/2011 08:33 PM Updated 12/17/2012 11:03 AM
  3. PCM2 CD Mechanism Swap This tutorial will show how I sourced and replaced the CD Mechanism in my 996 PCM2. Step 1 Remove the Fascia - A description of this is already in the forum at URL http://www.renntech....1789#entry41789 This will show you how to do Steps 1-4 of my tutorial, but the photo's I have taken will help The picture shows how a used a plastic spatula to prise the fascia off Step 2 Remove all the cluster plugs from rear of fascia Step 3 Shows how to locate the detents Picture 1 & 2 and how far you actually need to move the 5mm Allen Key Picture 3 & 4 Once all 4 detents have been released the PCM2 should slide out Step 4 Remove all the plugs in the order of the URL displayed above Please note the grey lead with the yellow arrow is for an external Digital TV and Alpine iPod which is connected & displayed through my PCM2 The PCM will then be free from the car Step 5 Remove the 4x T10 Torx screws as arrowed Please note these screws were missing on my unit and were probably not replaced by the installer who fitted the aftermarket Alpine units, so I am assuming they are T10's Step 6 Prise apart the case on both sides and where the red arrows indicate Until the case separates, at this point be very careful not to separate too far, see Step 7 Step 7 Remove the ribbon cable from the CD mechanism carefully (arrowed in red) Please Note, the circuit board arrowed in yellow is part of my aftermarket installation Step 8 Remove the 4x T10 Torx screws to release the CD mechanism from the case You are then left with the old CD mechanism Mine is a CDM-M3 4.8/4 I managed to find that 3 UK companies supplied this part. (I live in the UK) http://www.grandata....484-p-7879.html http://www.dalbani.c...ls.php?id=30856 http://www.donberg.c...cdm-m3-4.8.html I bought mine from Grandata, purely because they were the cheapest. The part however did take around 1 month to arrive The pictures on their websites do show different labels to that of mine, but I enquired with a couple of suppliers and they both said that as long as the unit was a CDM-M3 4.8/4 it would work. Here is a picture of the new mechanism And the old unit (left) & new unit side by side. I installed the new unit and refitted exactly the same as removal My CD's now eject fine and the constant clunking noise from the laser or motor is now none existent I hope this helps someone resolve this issue which haunted me for quite some time If you need any advice on this then by all means send me a message Thanks
  4. ALL I took the plunge and edited the update32.inf file and removed reference to the Telephone on the PCM v2.0 to v3.0 update CD files. My inf file now reads [system] ReleaseVersion=3.0 AllowedDevices=6631,6632,6633,6634 [gateway] Path=/gateway/gateway.bin ReleaseVersion=3.0 Inst=03 StartAddr=98368 Memtype=06 Format=00 Name=PCM2 HU-Gateway/ST10 Date=13.03.2003 ECUSoftwareVersionNumber=03114AD1 ECUSoftwareNumber=1103 Comment= [MMI] Path=/Mmi/Porsche.bin ReleaseVersion=3.0 Inst=04 StartAddr=262144 Memtype=06 Format=00 Name=PCM2 HU-MMI Date=28.05.2003 ECUSoftwareVersionNumber=03202ED1 ECUSoftwareNumber=2203 Comment= I then burned this together with folders, 'gateway' & 'MMI' using Nero to a CDROM at 4x Speed I inserted this into my PCM and went through the same steps as detailed above, however this time is reported Device 1 of 2 (for the 2 updates, as expected) At one point the update failed and asked me to insert the CD again, however I didn't and the update started again without removing the CD. This time everything was successful and the update took place, it does take a little while so don't panic. Also at the end of the update the screen goes blank when the PCM reboots for the update to take effect. I am now running version 3 software. I haven't noticed any real differences apart from NAVI now shows POI's and has 2 settings for the display colours but thats about it. Although those features might have been there before, I am unsure. Anyhow, this answers my own question and hopefully many other peoples.
  5. Hi I tried to update my PCM 2.0 from Software Version 2.0 to 3.0 and the update failed The weird thing is the original outdated Nav CD says to use version 3.0 but this works OK. Here is a photo of what is on the system at the moment IGNORE the checking PIN, it's just checking my SIM Card PIN when I turned on the ignition The Weird thing is that the Telephone Version has got ????? against it, what do other peoples state ? Here are the steps I take when upgrading, when the upgrade CD is inserted. Select YES Then Then an error No matter how many times I reinsert the upgrade CD I still get the same. The only thing I can think is that because the Telephone update is completed 1st (as detailed in the .inf file on the disk) and because my version is unknown i.e. ?????, the update is failing I've thought about altering the .inf file on the update disk so the telephone update doesn't complete, but the Gateway & MMI does. BUT I am very scared incase the telephone module is then unrecognised, or the PCM dies. I did insert EU NAV CD3 (2008) and it did install/update PCM successfully and appears to be working OK. Has anyone seen this before or does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get my PCM upgraded to Version 3.0, preferably without going to an Official Porsche Centre Regards
