  1. Some good news for you 2001-2002 Boxster owners! To do the cruise retrofit follow EdB's instructions with the exception of the wire between the DME and Instrument Cluster (for the cruise light). This wire is not required. The coding on the DME AND the Instrument Cluster needs to be changed to 'with Cruise Control'.
  2. Could be the anti-roll bar drop link - they are notorious for the joints wearing. I had this problem on the front of mine.
  3. I think the fact is that the non-expert can get the tiptronic car from 0-60 in the specified time every time, no problem - you just have to bury the loud pedal. Manuals are generally quoted as being faster 0-60, but that's in the hands of an experienced test driver (and with no sympathy for the clutch). Of course, I own a tip......... so I'm biased. Interesting about the new TT. Maybe there are less gearchanges with the tip.

  5. I totally agree - first step is a good 4-wheel alignment check. If it is off, the correct setup will transform the car. I'd reckon it is worth having this done once every couple of years. Small changes, particularly to toe and camber, can make big differences to how the car feels.
  6. Jeff 2002 Boxster S (UK RHD) The wiring diagram for 2002 does not show a wire between the DME and the Instrument Cluster. Do you know if the light will work without it? The three other connections are shown between the stalk and DME (for set, resume, and off). The connection D18 on the DME (which would normally go to the Cluster indicator light) is assigned to "Relay Elec. Fuel Pump Term. 85". I'd appreciate the benefit of your experience on this.

  8. I'm not being lazy, but I have been searching for half an hour. I recall seeing some pictures and instructions for fitting the outside air temperature sensor behind the front PU on an early model Boxster without aircon. Can anybody point me in the right direction.
  9. On all the cars I have seen the clutch switch is already in place and wired up. The brake disengage function comes from the brake light circuit.
  10. The wires which connect to the instrument cluster plugs are VW Part Number 000.979.010 I don't know the Porsche number, but the VW ones are a perfect fit.
  11. TP is absolutely right, of course. I didn't read carefully enough. The black plug is plug 3, and you need to connect to pin 17 on a 3.2.
  12. You could try connecting Instrument cluster plug one (blue) pin 16 to Motronic connector 4 pin 18. That's how its connected on a 996 and it looks like a Boxster 2.7 is connected that way on the wiring diagram.

  14. I'm not sure what you mean by 'gravel guards' as it isn't a term we use in the UK. We have things we call 'mud flaps' which I believe are called 'spashguards' in the US. Anyway, these are what I have fitted to my car: I think they are quite unobtrusive on mine, but would be more obvious on a light colour car. They came from Mid-America Motor Works (www.mamotorworks.com).
  15. I think I'd be tempted to have a cylinder leakage test done. At least it would check the worst case scenario of worn rings, and maybe valve guides. If it is burning that amount of oil there would seem to be something serious going on. You could also try a pressure check on the cooling system, as it might show a head gasket leak. Any oil in the water?

  20. Being New Year's Eve, I just "renewed" my membership with a contribution. I'd just like to thank Loren for the fantastic job he has done on this forum over the last year, and it is great to see how the community has grown.   21. Look at the options sticker under the hood, or in the service manual. If it shows IXLF then you have a PSE.
  22. I assume yours is an early car with DME5.2.2 (non-eGas), as the P1129 code is only listed for this DME version. The OBD2 manual (and the OBD2 code list here on the forum - A GOOD REASON FOR CONTRIBUTING) shows it as: P1129 Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 2 (Cylinders 4 - 6) - Lean Threshold There is a reference in this section of the manual which says "If DTC P0445 (EVAP canister purge valve - short to ground) is stored in the memory, correct this fault first. An open EVAP canister purge valve can lead to the lean threshold being reached." I am not sure if opening the gas cap could have released a sticking purge valve, but I suppose it is a possibility.   23. Get in and turn the ignition on - that will kill the alarm. If I leave mine locked for 5 days or more (after locking with the remote), the alarm ALWAYS sounds as soon as I unlock it with the key. Fortunately it is a rarity for me to leave it that long, but it is d*mned annoying when it does go off, and I haven't figured a way around it. Maybe I should try locking it with the key.
  24. On '03 cars the cruise control stalk connects directly to the instrument cluster and not to the DME and it looks a much simpler job. There is a coding option in the cluster for enabling cruise, and there is also an option in the DME to enable, although I don't know if both would need to be activated. I don't know anyone who has done it on an '03 but on paper it looks like a piece of cake (famous last words!) Just a point of interest - Ed B's instructions above also apply for 996's fitted with DME7.2.
  25. John I changed my lighter socket at the weekend as I had the same problem. It was about £6.00 for the whole thing - socket and element. It was a bit fiddly to change, but why muck about bending the tabs for such a small amount? They are obviously bent to a certain dimension, and how would you know if you got it wrong? Probably when it doesn't eject, and something gets a bit too hot.
