  1. The Savannah (tan) wheel on my C2 was just like you describe, so I think it is quite common on that colour leather. I took it as an opportunity to buy a new 3-spoke wheel, but it isn't a cheap solution!! I would suggest trying a leather dye. These people get very good reviews in the UK ( http://www.dynamixdyes.com/ ) but I'm sure you have equivalent suppliers in the US.
  2. I realise your mechanic is a friend, but this is a most peculiar diagnosis. I agree with Loren that you should get a second opinion from a Porsche specialist. You really need to get a proper diagnostic check with a Porsche Tester. Get the fault code numbers, and post them here.
  3. Why not connect it to the switched supply for the PCM? That's the orange wire going to pin 3 of the blue connector. Alternatively, you could splice in to the bottom connection of fuse E1, or to bridge plug 13/1 on the relay panel.
  4. I believe you can with the new Durametric 6.0, but not the older version. If you are thinking about buying one, best check with them first.
  5. This diagram shows the wire colours you need to connect. As for the GPS antenna, why not mount it where Porsche put the antenna for PCM - ie, under the cover in the centre of the dash, where the alarm LED is located. That's waht I did with my AVIC, and it also makes the wiring easier, as it is so close to the head unit. There is a metal plate in there which the antenna sticks to. You really need to get the fault codes read on the alarm system. Also, it stores the last ten events, so should show you what set the alarm off.
  6. I think this is the part, and the VW part number is shown. If the internal white part of the connector is intact, then it would be a simple matter to change the outer part and locking lever. I think someone else posted the Porsche part numbers on here a while ago, so it might be worth doing a search.
  7. Is your car manual or tiptronic? Coupe or cab? Does it have park assistant? If it is a manual coupe without park assistant, then the only things connected to the grey plug of the instrument cluster are the cruise control and obc stalks. I would triple-check that plug.
  8. I would have thought that if you remove the PCM1 unit you would be able to enable the OBC in the instrument cluster by doing the hack, and installing the 4-way stalk. The cluster OBC won't give you as comprehensive a display as the PCM1 trip function, but you will get the basics like fuel consumption, range, outside temperature, etc. I'm not too familiar with PCM1, but does the cluster display any trip information now? If not, try getting the OBC coded in the cluster (with a PST2 or PIWIS) and if it shows the outside temperature then you will be OK.
  9. If it is Hinkleys you are looking at, that's for the professional package. The amateur kit is £225. You can but it direct from Durametric, but by the time you pay shipping, duty & VAT it isn't really worth it. You could also try FVD in Germany. http://www.fvd.de
  10. I thought I would just finish this off by saying that I went for the Orange TPMS. I had to make a modification to the valve stems, but Orange supplied a fitting kit to fit the sensors to the valves. Here is the mod: I just need to mount the display, and hardwire it in, but so far it all looks good. Thanks to member Timf for his help in pointing me in the right direction.
  11. It is definitely a British thing to give "affectionate" names to cars. Porker is very common and probably comes from "Porsh-a", the German way of pronouncing it, rather than the British way of "Por-sh". Mercedes are Mercs, BMW's are Beemers, Rolls Royces are Rollers, Subarus are Scoobies - you get the picture.

Another Brit with this problem: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...c=30938&hl= Someone also suggested opening the rear lid with the emergency cable in the rear tail light (as it's easier to get to) and putting a jumper battery on the terminals in the engine bay, and then releasing the front lid. I've never tried it, so don't know if it works.
  13. The info I have says for most markets for MY1984 the standard wheels were 15" Teledials, and the optional wheels were 16" Fuchs. Later cars had 15" Fuchs standard, and 16" optional. No mention of BBS, and I think it is unlikely.
  14. I once had the intermittent wiper stop working on my 996 C2. I found that the small plug on the wiring harness had pulled out of the back of the potentiometer. It seemed like the wire was a bit short, and it was tricky to get back in. I doubt that this would have anything to do with the parking problem though. I recall having a problem with a steering column switch on a 986 some years ago after someone had removed it, and one of the pins wasn't making a proper contact when they refitted it. IIRC, that caused the wipers not to park.
  15. What colour is the smoke? If it is white, it might possibly be the air-oil separator. Otherwise, try a 5W-40 oil. I found it virtually eliminated it on my 3.4 996 C2, but then again it only did it every 20-30 starts.
  16. The parts you need for a cruise retrofit on a 2003 or 2004 Boxster or 996 are: 1 x 996.613.219.10.EWC - 4-Lever Stalk Unit 1 x 999.652.972.40 - Connector (for Cruise loom to stalk) 1 x 999.652.973.40 - Connector cap (optional - it helps to polarise the connector, but isn't essential) 4 x VW 000.979.009 - Wires (VW call them Repair Wires) 1 x Scotch-Lok Connector (to connect to wire to fuse B7) - or solder & insulate 1 x length of wire about 1 metre long to extend the VW wire to reach the fuse box. (I use a wire size of 16/0.2 which looks about the same size as the VW wire.) Sundries such as insulation tape and/or loom tape, some small cable ties, etc. If the stalk unit you get is second-hand then it probably has the lever caps (with the symbols and writing) on all 4 levers. If it is a new one, they don't always supply the cruise cap. If you need it, the part number is 996.613.505.00.A01 for gloss black, and 996.613.505.10.A05 for matt/satin black. You can use the other caps from your existing stalks. If you are adding OBC you will also need: 1 x 999.650.513.40 - Connector (for OBC loom to stalk) 4 x VW 000.979.009 - Repair Wires (in addition to those above)
  17. Those are the parts you would need to do a 987/997 cruise retrofit. If your car is 2003, then you have a 986/996.

  23. Yes, really. It just takes that second or so to pump it up, and I think the slightly thicker oil just makes the difference. It worked for me, and as you are in TX there is no reason to use a 0W oil.
  24. It sounds like a lifter to me too, and it's very common. What oil are you using? I found that by switching to a 5W-40 almost completely eliminated it on my 3.4 C2.
