  1. I assume it is the same on both sides. The main headlight switches are a known problem area, so maybe there is a bad (high resistance) contact inside. Just a thought.
  2. The tiptronic module will not allow it to shift down if there is a potentail over-rev condition. Double-clicking the buttons will downshift two gears if conditions allow. Why would anyone say it puts excessive load on an auto transmission, and not with a manual? It doesn't make sense to me. The owners' manual even suggests it for engine braking when going downhill, or slowing for urban areas, etc. As an aside, the latest PDK has a 'de-coupling' feature for normal driving, which makes the car freewheel when off throttle. It is for economy, but most people seem to dislike the feature. De-coupling is inhibited in sport mode.

  4. Julian Reap has an excellent reputation over here for his work. The only thing I would say is to make an appointment and take it there yourself. He gets so busy sometimes that lead times stretch.
  5. Yes, that's the one. Like wvicary, I was just trying to make sense of it, as there seems no logical reason why that fuse would affect the instrument cluster.
  6. Apart from ignition and injector problems, this combination of fault codes (one whole bank) can sometimes be caused by the Variocam solenoid. This also (usually) causes a rough idle. If you have access to a Porsche tester, you could try activating the bank 1 solenoid while the engine is idling, which will give you a clue if it is working or not. You can also monitor the inlet camshaft angles, and see if they read the same both sides. Edit: Extracted from the diagnostic sheet for P0301/2/3: VarioCam does not switch over completely The VarioCam does not switch over completely from power to torque valve timing. An indication of this problem is misfiring detected by the DME control module in the range of 1200 - 1500 rpm occurring in an entire bank. So you should also check to see the speed range when the misfires occurred, which a P-tester will do.

  8. Seems to me that the one-touch varies from year to year on the 996. I think it is a result of regulations, and can also vary from country to country. Most late model 996s don't seem to have one-touch-up on the passesnger side in Europe.

Here's a photo from the front, to the left of the battery (as you look at it) The red arrow shows the one Loren refers to, but if you have a Tiptronic you can use the grommet with the green arrow. Edit - This is a Right Hand Drive car shown, so you may find it to the right of the battery on yours!!
  10. Although the light has a wire going to it, and a bulb in the holder, it is not connected in the wiring loom. The looms are wired to connect only the driver's side fog light in Europe, to meet regulations. If you want to connect it, it is easier to run a new wire from one side to the other.
  11. IIRC, the front and rear lid lights are connected, so I think you should also check that the front compartment light is not on when the lid is shut. If the microswitch on the front or rear lid is stuck in the 'open' position, you would expect to hear a single beep when you lock the car.
  12. Check plug leads, distributor cap and rotor arm too.
  13. Terminal XE is ignition switched, and as far as I can see from the wiring diagrams supplies Relay XE, which is for the heater/aircon. Other Terminal numbers I have come across are: T15 – Ignition Switched supply T31 – Earth (usually brown wire) T30 – Permanent 12v feed (usually red+tracer) T86S – Ignition switched supply (radio, etc, ign aux) - key in ignition. T58d – Switch Backlighting T50 – Starter? T56A – High Beam I think these are correct, but the ususl disclaimer applies!
  14. Does it have the M490 option amplifier? If so, check fuse D9, as it has a separate fuse for the amp.

  17. The fuse board is in the drivers footwell, and there should be a paper chart inside with a fuse layout.
  18. Berlyn Services are agents for Swepco in the UK. Changing the ATF in a 986 only drains about 1/3 of the total quantity, so I think it is better to change it before 96k. When you drain it, I can guarantee it will be as black as your hat. As Brad says, it is important to be able to read the ATF temperature to get the level correct. By the way, I don't think the 993 Tip box is the same as the 986. The 993 was 4-speed.
  19. I have the NAV-TV unit, but I'm fairly sure they all work the same way, by emulating a CD Changer. The controls take some getting used to, as it is in no way intuitive. You select CD2 to access playlists, CD3 for artists, CD4 for albums, etc. Selecting CD1 exectutes the current selection. Once you get the hang of it, it isn't too bad, but it takes a while. It also helps if you organise your playlists carefully. I bought a used one on eBay, but if I had paid full price I would have been disappointed. Edit: I also bought a ViseeO Bluetooth kit on eBay which is great, and having used it I would have happily paid full price.
  20. I think the Durametric is fine on RHD cars, but it won't read Actual Values on the alarm system, which is what you need. The Actual Values will show the state of (some of) the door lock microswitches, but you would need a PST2 or PIWIS to read tham. The difficulty you may have is to determine on which side the problem is occurring.... I haven't taken a door lock to pieces myself, but I have heard people say that it is fairly easy to do. Some have even repaired or replaced microswitches once apart. There are 5 microswitches inside each lock.
  21. I assume you are getting a single or double beep when locking. Obviously the door lock motor is actually locking the door, but the error message would suggest that the alarm module is not getting the signal to say it has reached the lock position. This is normally caused by the micro switch which senses the mechanism has physically reached the lock position, but it could also be a break in the wires to the micro switch. Unusual though. Early 986's suffered from corroded connectors in the door plugs, but I guess you can rule that out if you have had it to pieces.
  22. If you clear the fault code, does it come back? It could be an old fault, long since fixed. The remotes on 9x6's are notorious for just stopping working. I had two go bad during my 996 ownership. One of them went bad just sitting in my kitchen drawer.
  23. By RoW, I mean everywhere except USA & Canada. "central locking limit switch not reaching safe position" is one of the classic messages you get when one of the door lock microswitches has broken or stuck. What exactly are the symptoms? Doors locking and then immediately unlocking?
  24. RoW cars are wired differently to US cars, and on the 986 and 996 you can remove the seat without disconnecting the battery, and you won't get an airbag light. The seat belt buckle on RoW cars isn't connected to the airbag circuit. Edit: the exception being if you have the child seat arbag deactivation kit.
  25. From a UK Porsche forum. This quote is from an independent Porsche Specialist: There are some black self tapping screws holding the cover over the cd changer. Remove these. The bracket holding the cd changer in has two 10mm bolts. Undo these and carefully remove the black multiplug and the orange fibre optic cable. On the base of the changer where the cables are plugged in there are two or three screws. Undo these and then you will see the fuse. You will need to get a fuse from Maplins or any other electrical shop.
