  1. The quality of the reception depends on where you live. In my younger days I had Chevys with a windshield antenna and the Boxster is not worse or better.. When I started out almost 7 years ago Becker asked owners if they would be interested in an external antenna. The interest was low and Becker never came out with an antenna. The 987 has an optional no cost external antenna that mounts to the fender. I have not seen it in person so I guess no owner is brave enough to order it. There is a retrofit kit for this antenna. It mounts near the gas flap. The installation instructions are 12 pages long and I have not looked at them to see if this can be used on the 986.
  2. The latest and last software version available in the US is 24 because the PST2 is no longer supported here. I would like to see some pictures of a PST2 with a software version higher than 24. Pictures like this that show the version, and the models which include the 997/987/Cayman.

  4. It has been said Zimmermann makes the rotors used by Porsche. With Zimmermann you can get rotors with the holes for the base Boxster. I thought you were looking at this type of kit I have seen on ebay that also has the pads and sensors. The kit in the picture is for the front on the base Boxster.   6. The am/fm antenna is in the glass. The thing in the A pillar is the electric booster. Here is an ebay picture of the booster.
  7. Charge the battery with a real charger, not a maintainer. Then have a load test done on the Optima to make sure it is ok.
  8. According to a mechanic I know the Cayenne always had the pink stuff. The 986/996 used the yellow stuff. When the 987/997 came out they had pink. Porsche now says to use pink on all the cars. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7640
  9. Except for the color, that looks like my car almost 3 years ago. In my case it was a lady in a Chevy truck that backed up into me while we were at a stop sign. Maybe she moved to Arizona. I also debated about putting on a different bumper cover. But, like adsach, I like the stock cover. It is a matter of taste. Do what you like. There are 160,000 986s out there. I told the body shop not to replace my amber lights because I wanted clear halogen or litronics. I was paid about $850 for the lights. So for about 4 months I drove around with amber headlights I borrowed from a friend who had switched to litronics. I finally found on ebay a set of clear 996 headlights for $350. You might also consider air horns. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5747 When I saw the backup lights come on I started blasting my horn but she did not hear me. I could not back up because there was a car right behind me that you can see in the picture. So when she started pushing me I put my foot on the brake and watched the front of my car fold up in slow motion.
  10. Do you have a picture? Never seen a broken shift cable. I have seen a few that were taken out of cars at my local dealer but they were not broken.

  13. What tires, what oil and such, are always debated. But the hot topic is always coolant. :rolleyes: You might want to read this first. I contacted Chevorn/Texaco years ago. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...2&st=0&p=18113& Porsche has gone pink. What I noticed over the past year when you could for the first time buy a 1 gallon jug, instead of the 1 quart jug, is that the containers said made in the US and had PCNA on it. To me that means the coolant is produced in the US, rather than importing coolant from Europe. So, I compare the yellow/green to the pink. For you chemist out there, they had the same chemicals listed on the lables. Ethylen glyco 107-21-1. Diethylen glycol 111-46-6. Sebacic acid 111-20-6. Sodium hydroxide 1310-73-2. Water 7732-18-5. Plus a dye. According to the mechanic Porsche started using pink for the Cayenne when it first came out. When the 987 came out for model year 2005 it was also pink. The yellow has been superseded by the pink. They can be mixed. They do have different part numbers. Porsche wants the same pink stuff to be used for all cars.

  16. Is your top up or down or somewhere in between.
  17. There are a number of grounding points in the trunk for the negative for the compressor. You will see a nut with brown wires under the nut. That is ground. In the 3rd picture there is a yellow line to the grounding lug. For positive to the compressor I added the wire from the compressor to the existing wire to the electric horns. There is a white 21 pin connector next to the brake booster and in the connector is the horn wire. With a pin removal tool I removed the wire and soldered the new wire to it - then put the pin back in the connector. The 2nd picture shows both wires soldered together. The red wire is the positive to the compressor. When you look at the 3rd pic you will see that the red wire has been coiled up and tucked away. I left it long because my future plan was to bring that wire to a dash switch next to the radio, so I could select oem horns, air horns, or all horns. I later decided not to do the switch. The reason for the air horns is that a big truck in front of me at a stop sign backed up and hit me so fast I would have had no time to play around with a switch.
  18. I used an angle bracket leftover from when I put in a garage door opener. Angle will not flex like a flat bracket and the compressor is heavy. Compressor and horn are bolted to the bracket. I then bolted the bracket to the mounting points for the third radiator. I did not want any of the nuts backing out over time because I would have to pull the cover to retighten them, so I used lock washers and loctite on the bolt threads. There are 2 rubber gromets so that you can run wires from the compressor into the front trunk. I poked a hole in one of them and ran the 2 wires for the compressor into the trunk. In the 3rd picture you can see the gromet I used and the red and black wires for the compressor.   19. I read your other posts on how to disconnect the annoying chime for the seal belt/key/light on. Very good. People have asked how to get rid of the chime for a long time. I gather you do not like noise pollution. But then you put in air horns. :lol: The next common complaint is that the turn signals are not loud enough. Maybe you can find a simple solution to that.
  20. You have the valve but cannot see it unless you remove this cover.
  21. When the car is cold you should hear an exhaust emission pump from the passenger side of the car. It does sound like a fan. This pump shuts off after about a minute as the car warms up. I assume this is what you are hearing. If not then you need to supply more details.
  22. I have pictures but they are on a computer which is being fixed. On a LHD car it is mounted under the carpet near the cd changer. Where it is mounted is not important. The reason we put it there is because there is space for the control unit so that the carpet is flush. That is also the location when it is a factory option. The control unit has 3 wires to hook up. Then there are 2 looms from the control unit that run to the back of each headlight. The control unit permits the low xenon beam to rotate up a few degrees to fill in the high halogen beam. But as Gundo said, you need to select the high beams to see the rotation.
  23. That shift is sold 2 different ways. With the one in your picture you have to remove the oem shift lever from your shift lever housing and replace it with the new short shift lever. So you end up reusing your original housing. This must be the black plastic housing you remember. Loren directed you to the TSB for this one. Or you can use the B&M instructions. The second way it is sold is with the shift lever already mounted in the housing. You unbolt your old housing and put in the new housing. Your old shift lever/housing is not touched except to remove it. Under either version the shift cable adjustment tool will not work once the short shift is in. The tool will only fit the oem shift lever. I use this tool before I do a short shift install to check to make sure that the oem shift/cables are properly adjusted before I put in the short shift. If the cables are off with the oem shift then they will also be off with the short shift. I would not even bother trying to find and use this tool unless you know someone has played around with your shift cables. I have used it many times and only once were the cables not adjusted properly, and that was on a car that had been molested.
  24. The horns and the compressor are on a metal bracket behind the bumper cover where the third radiator would be ( I have a 2.5). My car was backed into by a truck. When the body shop was ready to put the new bumper cover on I took the car home for the weekend so I could figure out a good mounting place. Then on Monday the shop put the cover on. I had thought of putting the compressor in the trunk but there is a lot of room behind the bumper cover. Plus the compressor is sealed so you do not need to put oil in it like the old days. So the compressor went on the same bracket as the horns. I took pictures but I will not have my computer for a few days.
