  1. Friend just got back from a tip to Europe. She has a 987 and he has a 997 S. They check into their Berlin hotel and started walking around. Found one of the lifestyle places with the Porsche goodies, and checked it out. Guy inside the store says the Berlin intro is about to happen, and did they want to go. Invitation only - at a dealership. Had to get a wrist band. They went.
  2. A bit late, but does no look like a factory conector. Most are black and that looks like something you can buy from Radio Shack. Air bag deactivation plug has 2 wires and is black
  3. Here I go again, with Yoseif Whiteson stuff. Yoseif was a local 2001 2.7 Boxster owner from 100 years ago. He never did the OBC retrofit with the stalk. I was the first local non-dealership guy to do it, with the help of Peter Smith. The link with the pictures were taken by a local owner named Dan because I did not have a digital camera 100 years ago. They were taken of me, working on Bruce's car. Don't do it the same way anymore. I wish that thing was long gone. And the funny thing is, Yoseif "the expert" did it with a switch and it did not work. I took him over to Peter and then it worked. Socket for the nut is 24mm. Torx for the air bag is T30. I have some 3 stalk switch assemblies leftover from prior OBC retrofits. They are of course missing the OBC stalk. You can remove your OBC stalk and put it on a leftover. Free if you are local. Otherwise something to trade.
  4. Gary, with all the free engine replacements and other stuff, I am suprised you could not score a free coolant overflow tank replacement.
  5. For some reason I have in my mind the same company makes this kind of stuff for Audi. I bought the assembly last year for a guy because his tun signal lever would not return. Something wrong inside. So I remove the OBC stalk to use on another car for an OBC retrofit. So if you replace the assembly because of the turn signals and you have OBC save the stalk.
  6. It is on the windshield pillar. On a LHD it is on the right side. I think is is also on the right side on a RHD. You need to remove the visor and the long black plastic trim that covers the pillar.
  7. I am with John on this. People get freaked out if they thing there is a drop too much or too little. If the engine was overfilled way, way too much, then you would notice it immediately. It would get sucked into the intake and you would have a smoke cloud behind you immediately, not 100 miles later. But for you oil freaks. If you need to drain some oil you unscrew the plastic filter cannister ad dump the oil out. There is 1 1/2 cups of oil in it. Screw the cannister back on. Start the car and check the level. Repeat if you want to remove more.
  8. Here is the 996 diagram I used when I did the test. Same as what Kbrandsma says. Left is 6 and 16, and 6 is the positive. Right is 15 and 5, and 5 is the positive. As I said before, the empty holes in the connector for the new correct round pins are numbered. My plan was to use the extension that comes in the factory kit, but it has 4 male round pins and you need 4 female round pins to go into the amp connector. Cut the males off and crimp on the females. Part number for the females is 999-652-568-22. Cost me 25 cents each from the dealer last year. Just make sure you put the female pins in the correct holes the first time, because you can't remove them without the correct pin removal tool. wire_map.pdf
  9. It does look like the ball that goes into the red/white plastic joint. The threaded end screws into the frame for the top, and there is a lock nut that is supposed to keep it from unscrewing. Go luck find the nut. Might be inside the drain tube. I hope the mounting lug that the threaded end goes into has not broken off.
  10. The immobilizer has a code that needs to match the DME, and you now have a different DME. I am rusty on this, so don't quote me. You need to get the immobilizer code for the control unit under the seat, only a friendly deal can do that. Then with a PST2/PIWIS you go into the DME and change the code to match your immobilizer code.
  11. I bought a used control unit, the one that goes under the seat, from ebay. But that thing is worthless without the code. The seller gave me the VIN for the car it came from, and I was able to get the code. In fact I got all the codes for the donor car, including the radio code. But you would need to find a real friendly US dealership.
  12. You are lucky, because the guy who has replacement shafts is also in Canada.
  13. One of the days I need to put the stuff in and take pictures. This is the way I was going to do it. I have the factory rear speaker kit, the newer style kit that includes the extension. Take the end of the long cable that would usually go to the back of the radio, and plug in the extension. The 4 pins on the end of the extension are not the correct round type that would plug into the amp connector. This is a picture of the front of the connector, and you can see the round style pins. You see empty holes where you can add more pins. Cut off the pins on the end of the extension and crimp on the correct 4 female round pins. I have posted pictures of them before and I think the part number - get them from your dealer. Then insert them into the correct empty holes from the back side of the connector. The holes are numbered, so you should get the 4 new pins it the correct holes the first time. I came up with a list of all the 996 amps that should work - if I can find the list. Anything that is not DSP and is pre MOST should work. God knows why Porsche has so many amp part numbers. The only real difference I could figure, was that the 996 coupe and cab use a different amp. I asked Peter why, and he thought something to do with crossovers. Next pic is the 996 amp I bought for my 1997 once I came up with the list. It came from a 1999 cab, which made sense as the Boxster is a cab. Others have used coupe amps with no problems.
  14. I had AAA when the 3rd windshield went it. They said it was subject to my $750 deductible. So I paid 100% for it. After 24 years with that company I am no more.
  15. How many stalks do you have and what are they for? Search around for OBC retrofit. Because when we do it we remove the steering wheel and the stalk assembly, and replace it with a new unit that has the additional OBC stalk.
  16. Once you get the belt off check anyting that spins. Pay attention to the pulleys and water pump. There should be no play in the water pump pulley. The bearings in these pumps don't seem to last. Bunch of waterpumps replaced in my area. Seem to go out around 70K miles. Independent mechanic I know is now using a different brand than the one Porsche sells.

  18. This reminds me one of these days I need to do this. I bought the rear speaker box long ago, to replace the zippered bag my 1997 had. Bought the amp long ago. Bought the rear speaker kit long ago. Bought the correct pins for the amp connector. Did a dry test long ago to make sure everything worked. Just need the time to put it all together
  19. If you want a glass window then you need an entire new top that has a glass window.
  20. There is no play to adjust out. The "stick" is connected to the transmission via 2 cables about 12 feet long. This vehicle is a mid-engine, with the long transmission cables that run to the rear, up and over the engine, then down to the transmission. Unlike a "normal" rear dive vehicle where the stick is connected directly to the transmission, this is not the case with a Boxster.
  21. I have had my 1997 for 10 years. The 6th inspection was done in June. The guy said he could smell the clutch. The frist 2 were done before we got the dyno.
  22. Sound like a flaky ignition switch, a common problem area.
  23. Are you talking about the clear plastic cover for the assembly, or the clear plastic lense in front of the bulbs? If it is the lense then it may have that look because of the high heat caused by aftermarket high wattage bulbs which cause brown patches when the plastic starts to melt. How about a picture?
  24. I am starting to forget more than I remember. Shortly after the 987 came out I was at the local dealer talking to 2 mechanics I know. I asked if the 987 exhaust system could bolt to a 986 without any modifications. 1 mechanic said he thought so, then Peter Smith came over and said no. There was a 987 and 986 on the lifts so we started looking at it. All I remember is the pipes on the 987 were routed a bit differently then a 986 - closer to the engine where the spark plug are. Don't remember any other details, other than you could not just simply bolt the 987 exhaust system into a 986.
  25. Not the electrical guy. Think you have a new battery going out. Have it load tested. Don't see how an MP3 on aux-in could drain the battery, when the radio is not even on. Plus the radio drains so little amps your battery should not be dead the next day. If you search around I bought an Autozone replacement battery some years ago. After some months it would not keep a charge. I could drive all day and in the morning is was dead. Battery was replaced under warranty. It was another dud. When I got home from work I would hook up my 10amp charger for a few hours. Would not start in the morning. I have the stuff to test a battery and one of the cells was bad, which usually mearns there is a short inside the battery, and a fully charged battery reading 14 volts will quickly drain itself if it cannot hold a charge. Back to Autozone to have it tested with a guy who pretended he could not speak English when I asked him a specific question. He tested for volts and it showed good. Amps are what you need to start a car. I asked him if he was testing the battery for the load with amps - that is when he said I needed to speak to the manager. That is why a 12 volt flashlight battery will not start a car - the starter needs amps. I received another battery and this one has worked fine for about 2 years.
