  1. Local owners would know. It is a plastic cleaned out mustard squeeze bottle filled with distilled water. I bring it to the local work on cars days in case someone needs to add water to the battery. Whenever I buy a new battery I pull the caps and check the acid level.
  2. My 1997 Boxstir and Autozone Duralast group 48 branded batteries do not get along. Back when they had the black top the first one was put in 1/22/02. Second on 11/29/02. Third 4/27/04. They all had the same problem. They would be dead after sitting overnight or after 2 days. This is after I had been driving the car for hours or had put my 10 amp charger on the battery for hours. The battery showed it had the voltage, but it did not have the amps. Used my amp meter to check the draw of the electrical system and it was normal. So for #3 I pulled the caps and put it on the charger. Checked with my hydrometer and 1 cell was much lower than the rest. To me that means there is a short in that cell which causes a drain. On the 10 amp charger all cells except that one would bubble. Back to Autozone for them to test #3 on their machine. I ask him if the machine does a load test. No answer. I don't think they know anything other than how to push the start button on the machine. The guy says the battery is low, whatever that means. I saw a load test button on the machine but I do not know what button he pushed. Now I have to talk to the manager. He says the battery needs to be charged so a load test can be done. Told him it had been on my 10 amp charger for several hours and I drove it over from my house which is 5 minutes away. Told him I used a hydrometer and one cell was dead. But that if they wanted to charge it then go ahead. Then the manager said I was too much trouble and to pull the battery from my car in the parking lot and it would be replaced under warranty. So I did. Pulled the battery. Showed him my receipts and when he went on the computer he saw that I was on #3. Told me that the warranty would be prorated. Told me I would get a $20 credit towards battery #4. #1 was $59.99. Now Autozone wants $84.99 for the battery. With the $20 credit I would pay 39.99 for #4 if I wanted it. If I went to Costco for a new battery then it is $53.99. Thought about Optima and all that stuff. While I was waiting I saw a pallet of defective Durlast and Jumpstart batteries at the rear of the store behind the counter. Wish I had taken a picture. To make a long story short. I have Duradud #4. At least it is the latest red top racing version. So I put some mustard in #4 when I got home. Acid level was a bit low. Put it on my charger and the charge was low. I was going to tell the manager to do all the tests they wanted to to on #4 before I put it in my car, but it was time for me to get out of town.
  3. I don't see the stickers listed as a part when I look up visor part numbers.
  4. Like this in a LHD USA car. My fingers are on the loop on the end of the cable. The wheels were not straight ahead. The head light had been removed. It will not be this easy for you. You will be working blind and the cable is not always where it should be.
  5. Thanks to Henry for hosting this. Dr. Henry did perform an amberectomy on a 996 with litronics. And the patient made a full recovery. For a second, I thought I was in Florida and another set of litronics were stolen....
  6. The tools for the projects listed will be at Henry's house. Time is the factor. Someone bring some shade....
  7. If mounting bolts means the mounting studs, then you do need new studs. The studs for the old style are different then the new style. The nuts for the studs you can reuse. There are 3 studs per transmission.
  8. Here is my 986 hooked up to a PST2. I am in the alarm control unit and it sure looks like I can change the country coding. Maybe, one of these days or in my dreams, I will buy the 986 retrofit kit, install it, then change the country coding for the alarm system from USA to GB and see if it works. I do not know of any American Boxster/996 owner who has done this as 99.9% of us do not know there is an optional alarm siren and tilt sensor for other countries. The sun looking thing is camera flash.
  9. If anyone cares. The first year Boxster (1997) did not have the map holder as that started in 1998. Then it went away in 2003 when the glove box came out. There are 2 plastic rivets. In the middle of the rivet is a pin. You get a small round tool like the end of a drill bit and push the pin out. This picture shows a plastic rivet, but the pin has not been pushed in to lock the rivet in place. Your pin will be flush with the head of the rivet and the pin is hard to see for that reason. You cannot pull the pin out so you push it through the body of the rivet.
  10. The levers are locked because the alarm was on when the battery died. There are several methods to get into the front trunk, all of which have been covered here before. The simple method is to get one of those chargers that can charge the battery through the lighter socket. Since your car sits a lot you can use it later as well.
  11. Model year 2000 has a pair of mechanical levers in the door sills to open the trunks. Can you pull up on those levers?
  12. I have had dead batteries over the years. When you use a PST2 you see a low voltage fault in the air bag system, but this fault did not trigger the air bag light to come on my car. I think your battery has nothing to do with the air bag light.
  13. I got 996 clears for my Boxster a few years ago. Porsche has played around with the part numbers over the years. The yellow sticker has DOT on it so it is for the US. About 2 weeks ago there were 3 pairs of 996 clears on Craigslist. All of them in the Bay Area. They were all in the $500 range for the pair.
  14. That switch is for the alarm contact for the storage box. You can replace it.
  15. Remind me not to let you borrow my car.... You were able to force the engine to spin past the limit of Range 1 while under acceleration into Range 2. Looks like the rev limiter can be beaten. Or, your DME has been altered to change when the rev limiter comes on. Here is a Boxster that also like Range 2.
  16. We put tip wheels on 2 cars with manual transmissions. The shift buttons were then wired to operate the OBC. But you also need to buy a tip air bag contact unit to do this. Aileen has an extra 3 spoke manual wheel (no air bag) she might sell, but Alberto is also interested in it. On the 28th I am going to take her old 3 spoke out and put in her new 3 spoke. Which is funny, because her old 3 spoke used to be in Henry Yee's car until he crashed it. Aileen thinks the wheel is haunted.... This is Henry Verheyen's car with a manual transmission. The tip shift buttons are used for the OBC.
  17. Henry and Ray have swapped faces before on the old style clusters so they should be able to help you. I will be pulling the instrument clusters on 1 and maybe 2 Boxsters for the OBC/trip computer retrofits. That part takes 5 minutes. The delicate part of the face swap operation is getting the indicator needles back on in the correct position....
  18. I think your car is homesick for Canada. If someone does not come up with an answer this may be another Peter question.. May be a silly question. But there are 2 double relays. The other one is for the top. Are you sure you pulled the correct relay?
  19. If this was a 986 I would also say the intermediate shaft. On the 986 Porsche went from a double to a single bearing that supports the end of the shaft. The bearing would fail. The intermediate shaft bearing support has a nut on the end. This would then shear off leaving a hole in the back of the engine for oil to dump on the ground. But once in a while the nut would shear off and the damage and oil dumping did not occur immediately. This issue was supposedly resolved with the 987. I have not heard of an intermediate shaft failure on a 987. Yet.... Go to the dealer and play dumb. You were at a toll booth - forget the rest. The dealer is going to read your DME to see what the engine has been doing anyway. They may also drain your oil to see if there is metal in it. Let us know what the problem is when you find out, if your dealer will even tell you.
  20. Was talking to a mechanic today and he had the old style master key set out as he needed to remove a 986 wheels for a brake pad and rotor change. It even says on the label to call McGard for a replacement key. Tempted to call 1-800-699-8788 just to see who answers. Forgot to ask about the new style.
  21. If driving 17 is Highway 17 to Santa Cruz. And you are from PA as in Pennsylvania, then I can fix you up. Bring 1 liter of your favorite DOT 4 brake fluid. We will do the rest.
  22. I glanced at the PDF. There is an excise tax of CAN$100 if the imported vehicle has air conditioning....
  23. Unlikely that a dealership would put in the aftermarket metal joints. When you buy a used car and work was done to it, you never know what you are going to find. A few years ago we worked on a car that had the old style transmission on one side, and the new style on the other side. Maybe that is why your transmissions do not work the same. But you will figure it out for sure once you get them out. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...666&hl=saga
  24. That is Aileen's job. She said she would be at the July 28th work on cars - if she wakes up in time.
  25. The transmission has come off the half moon gear. That is why the V-lever does not move. Hook the cable up to a drill - I forget which driection you need to run the drill. When the drill is running you rotate the V-lever with your hand and the worm gear will re-engage with the half moon gear. The V-lever cannot go full circle by itself because of the half moon gear. To get it to go full circle you have to turn it by hand when it comes off the gear, then it will start to go back on the gear. Hard to explain since you cannot see what is going on inside the transmission. Might as well take the transmission out, then remove the cover from the back of the transmission, then you can see what you are doing and get the gears back together. You need to remove the bolt for the V-lever. Then the V-lever. Then the round plastic plate. Then pull back the foam lining and you will see 3 nuts that bolt the transmission to the car. The V-lever bolt may be hard to remove if it has not been removed before. There is loctite on the threads. I use a breaker bar. I see you have the metal joints instead of the original plastic joints. Who put those in? That is why the push rod is bent. If you had the plastic joint the joint would have broken before the rod could bend. Push rod is 986 561 279 02.
