  1. If the cam covers and/or spark plug tubes also leaked then you would have all bases covered....
  2. I am getting lost trying to follow this. You had and old style and new style transmission. A transmission was moving. You put in two new style transmissions, and both are moving? Is that the problem? If so, they should not move. But how do you know they move? When you put a new style transmission in a 1997-2000 you need to replace the 3 mounting studs. The mounting studs for the old and new style are different. Are the correct studs in the car? The studs go into sheet metal. This is a weak point with the early cars as the sheet metal was weak. In the later cars this area was reinforced. I worked on a car where the sheet metal was bent from the force of a transmission gone wild, which bent the sheet metal, and the transmission was on an angle. Are both your transmissions vertical?

  4. He is from London. Most of the UK cars have an additional siren for the alarm. This siren has a built-in battery. If you disconnect the car battery without first turning the ignition key on, then the siren goes off. They say it is very loud....

  6. This is a better picture. The curved passenger side is on top. I have seen cars with aftermarket straight blades. I can't see how it would matter. I just happen to notice these things....
  7. The wipers are unique. The passenger side has a curve to it and is a bit shorter. I use the refills. I used the Bosch refills in the past but I have not seen them at the part stores in years. If there is a Pep Boys where you live and you want to use refills then try these. You need 22" but there are 3 widths. The narrow 7 mm should be the one.
  8. I cannot think of how cruise control would matter, but check with Richard Hamilton. If you want to put in a 996 cluster in your 986 then I need to know what year 986 you have and what year the 996 cluster is from.

  10. With the PST2 there are 2 choices. OBC present or not present. When you change it to "present" the default display is the outside temp. I do not know of any PST2 function to make it show a different OBC display, such as miles remaining in the gas tank. If you want the default display to be miles remaining I think it can be done by running a single wire from the instrument cluster connector to ground. No retrofit of a switch or stalk would be necessary.

  13. It has been 21 months since I replaced the tank and I have not checked the level since I replaced it and put on the .01 cap. I needed to add 2 cups of water to bring it up to the max level. A few days ago I was talking to the mechanic who showed me how to replace the tank. He was working on a red 2000 S. He had just replaced the water pump. I saw the trunk carpet had been pulled back, so you know what was next to be replaced. It was easy to see the dried coolant under the tank. He said he was going to replace the tank in 25 minutes. I should have stayed around and timed him. And there is also yet another blue coolant cap. The part number on the cap itself ends in .02, but the part number on the plastic bag it comes in is still .01. Sorry for the poor quality picture as I did not want to open the bag as I was not buying the cap.

  15. Make sure oil cap and dip stick are seated.
  16. Take off the wheel and look at the cam cover. That and the spark plug tubes are a common source for oil leaks.

  18. Go to the Quick Menu at the top of the page for a 2000 manual. The Boxster is underpowered, and heavy. That is the way Porsche wants it, to protect the 911/Carrera. I have had my 2.5 for 8 years. I rev it up to keep up.

  20. This is my mesage on Rennlist after I spoke to 2 mechanics. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/show...ad.php?t=371594 For Cheeta I told Peter that you had pulled the dash. He said there were some ground wires that might had not been hooked up. Sorry, but I was not paying attention. Because my focus was on Gator's simple problem. He swapped a 4 spoke for a 3 spoke steering wheel. The other mechanic, Manny, said maybe the ignition switch. This I do not understand because when you push on the air bag you close a ground circuit for the horn. I have done this swap several times over the years on local cars, including my own. I have removed and replaced many steering wheels over the years for the OBC retrofit. Never a problem. Doug on Rennlist said it might be the "floating ground" deal. I don't know. But Peter told me the same thing might happen if the air bag ground connector is not seated properly. The ground for the horn plate goes away when the ignition is turned on. So this will be a mystery until someone figures out what is going on.
  21. I have always meant to get to the bottom of what is covered and not. I have a 1997. My booklet says 7 years but over time it got changed to 8 years. When my car was due for a smog about 2 weeks before it was 8 years old my DME tested faulty and I had a check engine light. I had 5 other fault codes. But if the DME registers faulty then that must be replaced first as the other 5 fault codes could be corrupted by the bad DME. Got a new DME under the emission warranty. Still had the other fault codes so I replaced an oxygen sensor. Since my car is so old and I have owned it for 8 years I have a few smog tests done. In the early years that same oxygen sensor had been replaced before - I paid for the first replacement. My air flow sensor was also replaced - I paid for it. In the early years I asked the service guy why these parts were not covered under the emissions warranty. He said it had to do with how much the part costs. If it cost X or less then you pay. If it cost more than X then it is covered by the emission warranty. That is what the service guy told me and I did not know whether or not to believe him. I never followed up on this. I just paid for the replacement of emission related parts over the years so I could get my smog done. I was a wimp.
  22. I spoke to Peter Smith and another mechanic today. They do not know how to get just the connectors. This is why they save old wiring harnesss - in case they need parts. Both said that style connector is not in the repair kit. They both said to ask the parts guy, but that is like beating your head against the wall. I have done a lot of OBC retrofits over the years. There is an Amp connector we use, with an Amp part number on it. When Porsche jacked up the price 400% I went to the Amp/Tyco site and found the connector, but you had to buy like 10 thousand of them. The connector also has a BMW part number on it, so for a while I was buying them from BMW at a fraction of what Porsche wanted. Then BMW jacked up the price. I went back to Amp/Tyco with the BMW part number and they said it was a restricted part and would only sell to BMW. Let me know if you ever find a source in the US for the various Amp connectors used by Porsche.
  23. I have not done this myself. I watched a mechanic do it on a 987 when the 987 first came out. Lift up the boot. There is a round black plastic ring. You need to rotate that ring to the unlock position. Then you pull like heck to get the knob off. The mechanic actually stood on the seats, reach down, and pulled the knob off. I have seen pictures of it being done another way, but try that first. The picture below is after it was pulled off. You can see the grooves on the locking ring.
  24. That is how it is done on some Mercedes. I do not know that brand. But in the past when people have tried the devices that suck the oil out they were not able to get the tube into the sump.
