  1. My guess as to a reason why Porsche switched to 0W-40 was because of all the lifter noise complaints on cold start-up.
  2. You have 2 tubes because you have e-gas. The non e-gas 2.5 liter. from 1997-1999 had one tube. I don't know what the coating is or where it comes from. People on the message boards have asked about this once they finally learn how to open the engine lid. I have see it myself on other cars at our work on cars days. The picture is a local 2001 with tiptronic - same thing. Maybe Todd knows. I once asked asked one the mechanics at the dealership about this, and he knew what I was talking about. He had some theory that did not make sense to me. So, I will put this down as a Peter question.
  3. That might be a set like the one on the left, just the bits. Need to put a socket on the end of the bits. That is my old set which I bought 20 years ago because my Fiat had triple square bolts on the cv joints. If you look at your door striker and door stay. triple square is also used there. Black bits on the right are torx which have 6 points.

  5. The Boxster is the same way. There is one bell housing bolt that is a triple square, sometimes called XZN. I had an old set of just the bits, and just bought this set. They have 12 points.
  6. I would guess the alternator, but don't know how changing the battery would have anything to do with it, unless the terminals were reversed and the alternator got fried. Have Autozone test the alternator to see if it is charging. There should be about 14 volts with the engine running. Does your radio work? If the terminals were reversed then alternator can short, then the fuse on the back of the radio can blow. Fuses for the cd changer, ABS, and control unit under the seat can also blow. A mechanic told me all the electrical things that can get fried, but those are the ones I remember.
  7. I jack up just the left side. Then slide me and the drain pan and the tools under the car. Unscrew filter cannister and replace filter and o-ring. Screw cannister back on my hand. Then slide drain pan over to the drain plug. Remove plug. Make sure old crush washer comes out. Lower car until engine just touches the drain pan and let oil drain. Then jack up the car and replace plug with new washer. Slide oil pan out of the way. Tighten filter cannister and plug. Beer is optional.
  8. I assume you replaced the o-ring. Did you put the new o-ring in the groove where the threads are?

  10. Ok, not up on the new cars. Was looking for a switch like this on a 987 and I guess this 987 does not have the sport chrono option.
  11. The intermediate shaft is supported by a bearing on the rear of the engine. This shaft drive things, like the cams via chains. The bearing was a double bearing then Porsche switch to a single bearing. When the bearing fails it damages the engine. I think this change was made in 2001. Don't know of any way to prevent it since it is a design issue. You hear a noise like marbles in a can then the engine stops. A nut on the end of the shaft shears off which leave a hole in the back of the engine for oil to pour out. It is too late for you to do anything. That is the way I understand it.
  12. I am old and grew up in the era where you changed oil every 3,000 or maybe 6,000 miles. Now it is 15,000 on the 986 and 20,000 miles on the 987/Cayman. And the funny thing is Mobil does not even claim 20,000 miles. I got use to it, what the guys on the oil message board call "extended drain" intervals. I figure the engine holds twice the oil of a "normal" car and you are using synthetic. Some people say this extended drain is for ecology reasons. I'm more cynical. BMW services your car for free for 4 years. Porsche does not. Some people when they are looking at a car what to know what the maintenance costs are. A Porsche sales person can tell a customer you do not even need to change the oil until 20,000 miles.
  13. I just looked at the order guide. It says the limited edition comes with a sport exhaust. I did not see that on the window sticker yesterday or I would have looked under the rear and taken pictures. Looking at the picture I took of the shfit I see a switch next to the spoiler switch. I guess that is for the sport exhaust, but from the angle I can't make out the dual exhaust tip icon.

  15. I have heard of people shoving nail files, shirt collar stays, and other stuff into the slots. I have never tried this because I have the correct removal keys. The correct keys lock into the head so you can pull the head out. When I bought a Becker Traffic Pro from Crutchfield there were universal keys in the box. I know the key from the correct Audi will work. Did not know if it was also used by VW. Do you live near Becker in N.J.? I think Becker has been owned by Harman Kardon for several years.

  17. This is interesting. Did not know there was a test for the instrument cluster illumination sensor. 2003 cluster has LEDs, not bulbs.
  18. That round white plastic bushing in your hand is held in place with a black plastic plug with a barb on the end. If you did the short shifter install the Porsche way then you had to remove the black plastic plug in order to remove the spring-loaded cable connector. If you cannot find the plug then you can use a screw. (pic from Evan.) The screw is not screwed all the way in yet in the picture. Or. I think see the plug on PET 996 424 445 00 for $1.22, but on PET it is called a clip. Now, that white plastic bushing can go on 2 different ways. There is a lip on the bushing. That faces out. In your picture the lip is facing up.

  20. You can buy the cable from Porsche or Becker. The cable sold by Porsche is the same as Becker except the Becker is longer, so we coil any excess cable up next to the battery. It is much cheaper buying the cable from Becker or from a Becker dealer. You need a Becker Silverstone cable for a model 2660 (6 disc) or 2630 (10) disc changer. The Becker part number I was given is 1184.709-276.
  21. Think the rapid blinking means a burned out bulb somewhere.
  22. Here is another picture. This was Henry's car. The top ones with the single hole is what he used. You could try a plastic shop. In our area there is TAP Plastics but the are mostly California. Don't see why you could not use wood if you find the right thickness.

  24. The 1997-1999 2.5 uses a 2 side electrode plug. The gap is .8 mm and it is easy to measure. The 2000 -2004 2.7/3.2 uses a 4 side electrode plug. The gap is 1.6 mm. I have no clue how you would check the gap on a 4 side electrode plug. If they look ok you just use them out of the box. That is what the mechanics at my local dealer do. You can see both styles of plugs in the picture.
  25. One of the local owners bought aftermarket speaker brackets that were cut out of sheet plastic. They were for 2 instead of 4 speakers. I traced the shape on a piece of paper, but this was so long ago I don't remember what I did with the tracing.
