  1. It is a standard size group 48 battery. My local Costco does not have this size. I bought mine from Pep Boys for $60. Call any parts place or battery shop and see if they have in stock a group size 48 battery. Some of our local owners have bought them from Sears or Interstate. The one sold by my local Sears is identical to the one sold by Pep Boys, except the one at Sears is $30 more. The replacement battery sold at my local dealer is made by Douglas in the US. You were able to open the front trunk without the emergency release because the battery did not die with the alarm on. If it dies with the alarm on then the trunk levers are locked. Jeff
  2. Time to replace the battery. There is nothing special about a Moll battery, or a Porsche branded battery. Might be the lowest bidder for all I know. Porsche does not make a battery. Jeff
  3. I took some pictures of a 996 top and the plastic window being replaced at my local dealer. And I have a picture of the window which is a separate part. But my picture hosting site is not working at the monent. Only a Boxster plastic window is stitched in. The plastic window on a 996 is held in place with a zipper. There are 2 wires that sitck out which are attached to an electrical thing which heats some kind of sealant around the edge of the window. I have been told this electrical thing is very expensive. I bet the body shop does not have it. Jeff
  4. The blue cable connector does not have a ball joint like the black one. The instructions say to remove the protective cover and pull off the blue connector. What I like is the part about using a chisel to break the plastic tabs of the white bushings. That is the way I have been doing it since it is much faster than trying to cut them out with a utility knife like the B&M instructions say to do.
  5. In the instructions they do not remove the cables from the black and blue shift cable connectors that are spring loaded, like on the B&M instructions. Instead, they disconnect the connectors from the metal shift lever and the white plastic reverse lock out. No need to mark the location of the shift cables in the connectors the way they do it. It is just another way to skin a cat. No special tool is mentioned as the shift cables are not removed from their connectors. I would like to see what would happen if the shift cables need to be replaced if the Porsche short shift has been installed. Jeff
  6. You have to disconnect the 4 ball joints, 2 on each side. There is a lever tool in your tool kit for doing this. Instructions are in your owners manual. I have watched Mark do it and it is a real pain. Check the other messages on this board for the rest of the information you need. Bring your car to San Jose - I want to make a DVD on how to fix tops.   7. The new Porsche short shift is identical to the B&M unit, but cost over 3 times as much.
  8. That is great Ed. You are the first I know of who has done this. Hope you do not mind if I put up the 5 pictures mentioned in your instructions. I like the idea of doing the trip computer and cruise control retrofit at the same time. Have the dealer turn on the trip computer and cruise control with the PST2, and then install the 4 stalk steering column switch assembly and wire up everything. I will have to look at the 2001-2003 Boxster wiring diagrams to see what changes there are due to the new style instrument cluster. Also, I do not see why this cannot be done on a 996 other than their DME is behind the rear seats. Great 'hack.' Jeff
  9. Good for you. You will be fine with your 2.5 if cleaning it does any good. Sometimes they get physically damaged from flying junk - look at the thing that looks like a mirror and see if there are any flaws. 2 Porsche factory trained mechanic friends said it cannot be cleaned as the parameters will be changed. The 3rd had not tried but thought it was worth a try. Nothing needs to be recalibrated if it is replaced on a 2.5 as there is only one version. For the 2.7 and 3.2 a more contamination resistent sensor came out in 2000. If this revised sensor is put in a 2.7 or 3.2 programmed for the original style sensor, then the DME/ECU has to be reprogramed for the new style sensor. This has nothing to do with a 2.5 sensor as there is only one style. Jeff
  10. Chad, I do not think I have your email so send it to me. Aileen already bought her parts on Saturday. Aileen and I will do the Boxster and you and Loren can do the 996. Get your parts. This will be a good DVD. I have a ball end metric allen wrench set, but it is not need. I have a snap-on wobble extension that Porsche says is needed, but I change the pulgs without it. Funny, but some of the special tool stuff the shop manual(s) say you need, the mechanics at my local dealer do not have as they use what they have that works, as they have to buy their own tools. If you want to change the brake fluid then buy at least a liter of your favorite flavor. We will do the clutch at the same time. If your power steering fluid level is ok then you do not need to buy a can of Pentosine. I use the 99 cents per gallon washer fluid We will time the 2 teams. But you should beat us as it takes a bit longer to access a mid-engine. Jeff
  11. I want your car. Been looking for a 996 that needs service. Aileen who worked on your car needs a 30k service and we are going to film it. Want to film a 996 service at the same time, with the cars side by side. Also do the brake fluid replacement with my Motive. I have done the 15, 30, 45, and 60k services and have the tools and the 'official' maintenance schedule given to the mechanics. This time you can get your hands dirty and play a leading role.   12. Would need to see a picture of your new one to see if it complete. On this one Josh put in the black one on his GT2, which replaced his painted one. The black one was just a shell. We had to transfer the lock, lid, clips, and trim panels from his painted one to the black one. Jeff
  13. I posted here there was a side specific switch for the sport exhaust switch, otherwise the icon would be upside down. Did not think about the spoiler switch. The guy at Carlsen should have known you need a RHD switch with your accent. :D A few days ago a guy on the UK Boxster board with a dead battery was trying to find the emergency release cable for the front trunk. He called all the 'experts' he knew. Spent hours removing the wheel and plastic fender liner and searching the messages on the UK board.   14. Look at 20 pounds of wiring diagrams to find out on what page, if any, there is a reference to a level sensor related to an oil level check. Not yet raining in San Jose.
  15. In the pre 2002 litronic retrofit kit there was a control unit for the beam rotation and a wiring harness in the kit. Looking at the parts list for a 2003 996 with 601 option I see a control unit 996 618 151 15. And a wiring harness 996 612 317 61. I think you need the control unit for the beam rotation. I seem to remember that when I started to remove Colm's Bi-Xenon headlight it has the additional wiring harness to it just like the original litronics. Raman wants to do his fiber optic changer this Saturday. If someone will come by with and without Bi-Xenon and Loren will bring the 996 wiring diagrams then it will be easy to figure out how to do the retrofit.
  16. I just checked with my Boxster friend who had traction control but got rid of his car last year. He does not remember if the switch can rock in both directions like the other switches, Just grab the horseshoe with your fingers from the back and lift up. It is held in place with 4 small plastic clips. That shift has a set screw so you need a 5mm allen wrench to loosen it a few turns. Jeff
  17. I cannot say for sure as I have never played with the t/c switch. I would think it is just like all the other switches in that the return to the neutral position when you take your finger off. Jeff
  18. Never seen this recommendation published by Porsche for any current model car. As I have posted on other boards, the difference in the length of throws between the different models is, I believe, do to the transmission itself and not something in the shift linkage assembly. As far as I can tell from the pictures of the B&M, Ruf, and TechArt transmission units they are identical except for the color. They all have 3 adjustment settings. Local 2002 996 owner Paul bought the B&M unit that attaches to the transmission, and we will be putting it in his car. Since I have put in many B&M shift lever units it will be interesting to see the difference with the new B&M transmission unit. Jeff
  19. There is always the dip stick. Only Peter would be able to figure this out - if there is a fix and there just may not be due to the software in the cluster. The turbo cluster will not let you check the oil level with the gauge unless it receives a signal or something that the car is level. I asked local turbo owner Alex if he has ever seen the 'not level' message, and he has. A few weeks ago Peter said it should have nothing to do with the level sensors on the suspension for litronics. The oil pressure sender part number I gave you, that bolts to the cam cover, is the same for a turbo and 996. No way is that thing going to determine if the car is level. In the instrument cluster wiring diagram I do not see a wire to a turbo cluster for 'car level.' There is a oil level transmitter in the turbo oil tank like Loren said. I wish there was a way to figure out if this part has 2 functions. Looking at all the wiring daigrams is like looking at Chinese to me. I wish there was a way to disable the car level thing with the PST2. Someone is going to have to compare the turbo and Boxster/996 wiring diagrams to determine what sensor in a turbo determines if the car is level when doing an oil level check. My pure guess is it is the transmitter in the tank. If I had the part it my hands it would easy to see if it can also sense the angle of the car.
  20. I bet you have a 2.5. Had the same hesitation on my 1997 but at 4k rpm, then after a slight lag it would go to red line. Replaced $en$or and back to normal. For some reason the 2.5 sensor is much more expensive then the 2.7/3.2. Bosch has a monoply on the sensor market. The only place I know to buy it is from a Porsche dealer. Let me know if you can find it in the aftermarket. It is next to the air box where you put in the filter - can't miss it - you will see the wires to it. Need a T-20 anti tamper bit to remove the 2 screws that hold the sensor in place. The bulb you need is 999 631 303 90. Guess where you buy it. Never seen it at Pep Boys, Grand Auto, Kragens, or Auto Zone. Must not be a common enough bulb. Jeff
  21. Netrophile has a UK car with option 536 for insurance reasons. There is an alarm siren, battery back up, and tilt sensor. There is a retrofit kit I was thinking of ordering from Germany. On a UK car the ignition key must be turned on first, then the main battery disconnected. If you do not have the key on when you disconnect the battery the alarm siren with it's own battery will go off. When I work on a car that requires the battery to be disconnected, I disconnect just the negative. If you want to replace a battery, for safety reasons, you disconnect the negative first, then the positive. If your wrench is on the positive cable and the wrench touches ground - sparks - if the negative cable is still hooked up. But if you remove the negative cable first and the wrench touches ground - then nothing. When you put in a new battery you hook up positive first, then negative. Not so important on our cars due to the location of the battery in the trunk. Jeff
  22. You are going to confuse the 996 owners with talk of a cargo net for the rear trunk. Part number is 986 551 982 00. Jeff
  23. There is an alarm contact where the radio slides in. On the standard radio the metal body has a small plastic sticker. The alarm contact rests on the sticker. But if you were to slide the radio out while the alarm was on the alarm contact would contact the metal body of the radio and the alarm would go off. Does the Traffic Pro have this sticker? Aftermarket radios do not have this sticker and that is why you hear a beep when setting the alarm - the alarm contact is touching the metal body. The fix is to pull the wire off the alarm contact and cover it with tape. Or, put some type of thin insulation on the body where it comes into contact with the alarm contact. The Traffic Pro install instructions are little help. It simply says "clip alarm contact (996 645 106 00) onto the left side of the center nozzle holder and push flat connector of the radio frame on the alarm contact."
  24. Lucky I remembered reading about no sound from a Traffic Pro on the German and UK Boxster boards. There is nothing about this in the Traffic Pro TSB installation instructions so when I saw the messages I was wondering why they were talking about moving a wire in order to get sound. If you can take some pictures of what needs to be done that would be great as I see many people who are interested in Traffic Pro. I have never understood electrical stuff so I almost always have to get help on that subject. Do not know what is an ISO adapter - is that a part that comes with the Traffic Pro? The wires are small and do not carry much juice so if you get a good electrical connection by twisting then just use tape. Plus you will not have any strain on the wires that would pull them apart.
