  1. Just channel locks with sections of garden hose so the teeth don't scratch the stem of the mirror. I once did it with channel locks and a piece of card board. The stem of the mirror has a clip on the end of it that you cannot see. The mount that is glued to the glass has a matching clip that you cannot see. When you rotate the stem of the mirror 90 degrees like Loren's drawing then the clips unlock and the mirror pulls away from the glass. Loren's diagram shows the special tool which is a modified vice grips that have protective pads where the teeth would normally be.

  3. The emergency release is hidden behind the aluminum heat shield on the drivers side. You will have to pull the heat shield back and see if you can find it. It is a stranded cable with a pull loop on the end. The only picture I could find shows it with the bumper cover off. But you can get to it with the cover on.

  5. I had clutch chatter when taking off in 1st. 67,000 miles. It was also hard to push down the clutch pedal. Clutch was replaced yesterday. It was down to the rivets on the pressure plate side, and had started to score the pressure plate. Also typical heat checking on the flywheel. No more chatter and I can push the pedal down with my thumb. Feels like when I bought it 9 years ago.
  6. Anti-seize is a thin bodied grease. Then you get to mix in your flavor. Lead in the olden days. Copper. Nickel. Graphite. Bannana peels. Whatever.
  7. 2 1/2 years after I replaced the plastic coolant tank my car is on the lift for a clutch replacement. With the transmission out you can see all the hoses. I had flashbacks. Now I can take a decent picture of the 3" rubber connecting hose. And you can see the 2 worm drive clamps that I used.

Maybe Loren can merge this with this. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2325 I did not use the Gatorback flavor because it cost a few dollars more, and I could not see a reason for the slits on the ribs of the belt. When I did a google searched for the Gatorback on car message boards some people said it made more noise than the standard belt, while others liked it. I have no way to verify this and none of the message boards had anything to do with Porsche. You should put it in and give us a review.

  10. This is not an issue on the Boxster, just 2002 and newer 996s. Any year Boxster lits will fit your 2001. Any 1999-2001 996 lits will fit your 2001. Nothing needs to be done to the wiring.
  11. 2000-2002 was 250 hp. 2003 went up to 258 hp. Another Boxstir in the future?
  12. There is a new independent shop in Santa Clara owned by Marvin Weitz. He worked for Stevens Creek and then Carlsen. He is going to replace my clutch. Might see what he charges unless you want to do it yourself. He does it a way I have not seen before. He removes the big round electrical plug next to the tank in order to get to the clamp.

  14. Amazing detective work - I could not figure out what azzarO was talking about. One of the local owners has the clear plastic things.
  15. I assume you have a manual transmission. No coolant hoses are touched to remove and replace a transmission.
  16. Spark plug tubes go through the camshaft covers so the plugs, then the tubes, and then cover are removed. Search around as these subjects have been covered serveral times. It is not a easy DIYer project as you need special tools to hold the camshafts in place, or you can break them when the cover is removed. Or you need to know how to position the crankshaft if you do not have the tool before removing a cover. The cover does not have a normal gasket. A bead of silicon sealant is used instead. When I bought my 1997 in 1999 I notice a small drip from one of the covers. I snugged up all the bolts and it went away. You might try that. They are little bolts so just snug them up or you can strip the threads.

  18. If you disconnect the electrical connector to the seat and turn the ignition on the air bag light goes go. No way to turn it off unless the car is hooked up to a PST2/PIWIS or a Durametric.   19. Don't know what levers are being talked about but here is a 2003 2.7 with the transmission out of the car.
  20. What Geoff said. Pull out a headlight and check both bulbs and I bet they are not the stock 55 watt bulbs. Just about everything inside the headlight is plastic, including the reflector. The high wattage bulbs some people like to put in burn/melt the plastic reflector.
  21. I know a little bit, for a lay person. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...983&hl=smog In the olden days the car sat still on the parking lot. Wheels never turned during the test. Then the dyno thing came out. Before your rear tires rest in the dyno rollers, there is a bar in the front of the rollers. When you drive the car onto the rollers the tires push down on the bar which is a weight scale. If you look at some recent smog inspection reports there is a line item for the test weight of the vehicle. So if you tell the smog machine you have a 2,000 pound Elise for testing, but a 3,000 pound vehicle such as a Boxster just drove up on the rollers, you got a problem with Arnold. Then if something went wrong during the test, such as the mechanic could not hold a steady speed during the test, then you backed the car off the rollers and started all over again. Why? Because to restart the test the vehicle needs to be weighed all over again. The speed that needs to be held for the test is 15 mph and then again at 25 mph. This is not hard to do with a manual transmission. Problem is some vehicles have an automatic transmission and if it shifts to the next higher gear during the test the rpms drop or the speed changes, which means you cannot compete the test. Then you need to restart the test, and back the car off the rollers.
  22. That is a sign that the switch for the front trunk latch is not working. That switch is for the light and alarm. Close everything, but leave the front trunk opened. Set the alarm and you should hear a single beep from the alarm horn to alert you the trunk is opened. No beep then the switch is acting up. Also your 2004 should have a warning light on the instrument cluster for when the trunk lid is not closed. If the warning light does not come on then it is the switch again.
  23. Boxster guy said he got the locking ring off with a screwdriver.
  24. I have had 3 other convertible cars, English and Italian. They had drains in the floor pan under the seat. So what does Porsche do? The floor pan under the seat is shaped like a bowl. So put the control unit in the bowl with no drain. Time to get out the drill. When the 987 first came out one of the first things I did was to look under the seat to see if it was still there.
