  1. You can remove all 3 trim pieces if you have the glove box. And want to remove your steering wheel.
  2. The part number you gave is several years old and not current. 70C is the color black code and VDO is the company that makes the cluster. So I have been told. VDO does not sell parts for our electronic instrument clusters and Porsche does not sell refurbished units. Still do not know why your cluster was replaced. I guess you may have traction control. The top relay just pulls out. For any other electrical problems take it back to your mechanic. If the mechanic does not have the PST2 or cannot figure it out then you have to go to..............a Porsche dealer.
  3. I asked Peter and told him you were sure it was not the light bulb. He said to check the top relay/control unit. The control unit is also the thing that keeps the motor running a few seconds when it is down and you are still holding the switch in the down position. The lack of the "grinding noise" and no light may both be related to a defective control unit. This is a guess since you have not provided info on your replacement cluster. Find a 1997-1999 Boxster friend and swap units and see if that is the fix. Do not try any other year as it will not work.
  4. Someone claimed it was so you could not program the unit while in reverse. Makes no sense to me. Can someone with TrafficPro check this internet claim out?
  5. The top icon is in the far right position no matter what year. The part numbers on the current part list are the same for a 1997-1999 clusters. Need more info. The part number of the cluster that was put in and its history. Do you have traction control? When you turn the key on there is a bulb check. A picture of that will be nice. I cannot figure out a noise over the internet, but there is a "grinding" noise as the top reaches its open or close limit due to the mechanical transmissions driven by an electrical motor and cables. No sound like that on a 996 as it is hydraulic.
  6. For Brad, you have to hold the switch for as long as it takes the light to go out. Do not worry about holding it too long. The top will stop moving and then a few seconds later the light will go out. For Greg, what year?

  8. Umn was just having some fun. I assumed it was the side air bag until I saw his post. The pic is not my car. The mechanics I know at my local dealer send me pictures of interesting things they find on customer cars. Can't look at the shop manual at the moment, so from memory since I have never done this. First, disconnect the battery. Remove the foam cover under the dash held in place with 2 plastic plugs. Look up and you will see 2 bolts for the cover. Remove the bolts and the cover will pivot up like in the picture. The cover is hinged at the top and will look just like the pic except you will not have a mini disc unit behind it. :o Oh, the hinge in the picture looks like a kitchen cabinet item so the hinge you will see will be different. Take some pictures and let us know how it goes. I did not know our cars were a target of air bag thefts like other cars.
  9. You can buy the upper or lower covers from Porsche.
  10. The clips on the pivot point for the clamshell were taken off to have better access to the engine in that picture. Those clips are different than the ones for the push rods. I think I have this figured out. You reach in through the roll bar and remove the square brass colored clip that hold the clamshell push rod. Then you can pull the push rod aside. Once you have disconnected both push rods then you can lift up the clamshell and have access to the top drive. If this is the way to do it then it is much easier than trying to disconnect the other end of the push rod from the V lever due to the ball socket. Does this sound correct? Right side. Left side showing black push rod with a line to its clip. Easy to take pictures when the top works. ;)
  11. Yes, but you would need all the other parts that go with it.
  12. I have seen something like that with a different clip but have no personal experience.
  13. A few questions first so you do not take stuff apart for nothing. What year. When you start the car and pull up on the hand brake does the light come on? Turn the key on - handbrake up and windows up - when you unlatch the top do the windows drop down a bit? Lets rule out an electrical issue. But if the motor was running and you heard thumping under the clamshell it sounds mechanical to me, and you will have to get the top in the service position to inspect.
  14. Can't happen on my 1997 since the side air bags started in 1998. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?a...ent&code=diy_dp No need to go to a dealer unless the light is in. Have no idea how far they got into the removal, so have the dealer hook you up to the PST2 and check out the system. Jeff
  15. Sure looks like another version of TrafficPro. TrafficPro II. Never seen anything about it in connection with Porsche. But Porsche is a little slow for things like this and MOST has been out for a while - and Porsche needs to figure out that one out. I cannot say 1 and 2 are the same since I have not looked at the specs, but then the front looks different. The face plate is fixed on 2 but you can remove it on 1. The buttons are different. Have no idea about 2 in the Porsche - try the Becker board. 2 may not be for our cars. Ford may use a different changer than the Becker. I bet they do.
  16. You would not be putting a big load with 2 little lights. We tap into the over head light when doing the footwell lighting retrofit and that adds 2 lights that are the same as the lights in the trunk without a problem. I bet you got out the microscope looking for a plunger switch for the light - like I did when I first got my car. There is an electric switch inside the door hooked up the the latch.
  17. Where is Mark? http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...st=0entry2750 The top is only supposed to fail in the down position. :( Hope you like working in small confined places. Maybe Mark has a tip that I cannot think of. Jeff It may not be the cables, so rule all the other problem areas out first. Never heard of both cables failing at the same time. When one fails the other one continues to turn and the clamshell starts to twist. You hear and seen not nice things. Do you hear the top motor running? If not then it is not likely to be the cables
  18. First I have heard about a TrafficPro II as well. The original TrafficPro used by Porsche is being discounted to $500 by an aftermarket company so I suspected there might be something new. There is no problem with the TrafficPro I know and the cd changer. Jeff
  19. Porsche is a funny company in that it does not use a universal wiring harness for all cars. Each wiring harness is made to the car specs. You are not going to find that it is pre wired. You will first have to figure out how you are going to get wires inside the door. There is the connector unless you wanted to drill holes. You would have to get the correct male and female pins. Then I guess you would tap into the overhead light so that the door lights would go on when the overhead light goes on when you open the door. A lot of work for 2 lights. Jeff
  20. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=661 You could be the first one with a 996 to give it a try. Jeff
  21. I thought it was the plastic bag behind the cushion that inflates.
  22. If a fault has been erased it will only come back if the fault is detected again. 1124 is for cylinders 1-3 and 1126 is for 4-6. The oxygen sensors are detecting a lean condition. The book lists several causes but I would check everything to see if there is a leak in the air intake. Jeff
  23. Ask your dealer who they use. Stevens Creek Porsche uses Don with Dings Plus out of Santa Clara. 408-243-8778. I have seen him there a few times in his van and watched him. He has paint sprayers in his van.
  24. The RMS issue has been around since the MY97 intro for the Boxster. The block on a 996 is the same on the Boxster for the early years. It is hit or miss. I have a 1997 with no leaks if that makes you feel better. Jeff
