  1. My guess is that you have a remote that has gone bad. I saw something in the shop manual. It says that if the remote is operated more than 256 times but less than 1024 times and the signal does not reach the receiver (like the car battery is disconnected or you are out of range) then the car will not recognise the remote. If this has happened then you put the key in and switch on the ignition. Switch off ignition and remove key. Then push the button on the key within 6 seconds after it has been removed. Porsche calls this re-synchronisation. I assume you can still start the car with the remote.
  2. I do not have a good picture of it since it is hidden by the throttle body and I have never removed one. It is on top and you can replace it once you removed the engine lid. The shop manual says to have to swing the throttle body out of the way to get to the 2 bolts for the starter. This shows the drive end of the starter just to show you the location.

  7. Don't know what step 21 is. You whould be able to do it with the renntech post. Do not let the air bag hang from the cable or you will break the plastic prongs on the spiral spring. If the cars don't have the OBC then it would be a good time to do the retrofit. The DVD has all of this on it.
  8. We do it the same way on a Boxster.
  9. On the UK Boxster board there are many pictures of both versions. Boxa.net You can also find out about the red tail lights, the painted sport seat backs, and crest embossed in the seat.
  10. All I know is Peter said to use an electric 5 bar gauge. 1 bar equals 14.5 psi. The 996 has a 5 bar gauge. The 996 sender unit works with a 5 bar gauge. Our instrument cluster is made by VDO and VDO has some small gauges that would be a good match with the base Boxster instrument cluster. A guy on ebay was selling a trim plate for 2 gauges that would mount where the storage bin is.

  12. The brake pedal is made of metal and has a ridge so the alum pedal will not sit flat - but will rock side-to-side. You take a small grinder and make it flat or put small washers/shims under the alum pedal before you bolt it down.
  13. Looks like I am going to have to go to my dealer and ask the guys in the shop and parts what is going on with the 03 part number cables for the old style transmissions. I doubt they will know as they put in the new style transmissions when there is a top problem, and do not try to get the old style to work properly. Is the ferrule and square drive end the same on the 03 cables as your original cables? The only difference is that everything with the 03 cables was 2 inches shorter than your old cables? What does not make sense to me is that if you can use the 03 cables on the old style transmissions then why in the world did Porsche recently come out with the reinforced sided cables for the old style transmissions just to eliminate them. Me thinks the old style transmissions will soon be eliminated from the parts inventory. Porsche does not sell parts for either transmission style - just the entire unit. That square drive cable is a very, very tight fit on the inside end of the worm gear. I tried to remove it and could not figure it out. I took it to Peter and he showed me how to do it. Vise-grips and a pair of side cutters. And the worm drive flew into his tool chest when it came off with a sharp twist.

  15. I thought the 996 switched over to the 220 radio in 199 since that is when it happened to the Boxster. Maybe you have an early model year 1999 - I have never seen a 210 on a 996 but there are a lot of cars I have not seen. The 1999 996 owners manual I have that was printed in January 1998 shows a 210 radio. If you see 688 on your option sticker than your 996 came with the 210. The 210 and 220 work with the Becker 2660 changer or the Porsche CDC-3 changer. I don't know what all the RCA jacks do. We pull the radio heads out and the owners hook up their gadgets. This is the back of a 220. The green and blue connectors are for a changer. The aux-in connector get plugged in where the blue connector is in the picture. And that is why you cannot have a changer and the aux-in plugged in a the same time.

  17. Here is some info I got in 2002. On a hot day my needle is about where yours is. Elf makes the coolant sold by the Porsche dealer. In the one liter bottles for a lot of money. Elf is a large petroleum/chemical company in Europe. I have been trying for find the equivalent sold at a parts place, such as Kragens AutoZone, Pep Boys. It has to be a standard long life coolant - nothing special. In 1998 Elf and Texaco entered into a joint venture for the sale of coolant in Europe - under the name Arteco. Then Chevron and Texaco merged. So I contact Chevron/Texaco and they contact Europe. This is the email I received.   18. You changed radio models. The 220 series does have an aux-in - but you can have aux-in or the changer - not both as the place on the back of the radio head for the changer connector or aux-in connector is the same spot. You cannot have 2 connectors plugged into the same spot at the same time. The 210 series does not have an aux-in feature. The US 996 never had the 210 series. 210 was used on 1997-1998 Boxsters. This is the aux-in connector for the 220.

  21. You have a problem child. I can tell you manually raise and lower your top from the last 2 pictures. Everything has been disconnected. You do not break the V lever unless someone has pried against it to pop off the ball joint for the black push rod that goes to the clamshell. Start driving out the West since it looks like we may see and film a top fix on golfhom car. Do not know why you bought used 1998 transmissions or a top motor. They are the same for 1997-1999. What do you think is broken? Does the top electric motor work? You need to address the cables. What is wrong with your top transmissions?
  22. Can you take some pictures and post them here. When I saw that Porsche listed one part number for all years it made no sense to me as they are different from 1997-1999 vs. 2000 up. Looks like you have to use the new style transmission drive cables on the old style transmission - not just the plastic housings. There are pictures here of how to get off the square end off the worm drive gear used in the old style - have no experience with the new style.
  23. I have removed the center and rear covers to replace a fuel filter on a 1998 and they were held in place with plastic nuts. The front cover is held in place with 6 clips. On the older cars they are made of plastic and I have not looked to see if they are still plastic.
  24. 1997-1999 does not have e-gas. The non e-gas cars have a curise control unit above the gas pedal if the car has the option. I doubt if you have it but take a look. This is one I saw on ebay.
