  1. This is not uncommon. Get yourself a T50 torx bit and see if you can get the plug out. It is actually a better fit than a 8 mm allen bit. Buy a new plug before you do this.
  2. Remove the drivers seat and there is a control unit under it. Remove the control unit, open it up, and dry it out. Also check the fuse on the control unit. Check in the Boxster section as this has been covered several times. Unfortunately the control unit may have been exposed to water and electricity too long and may be fried.

  4. A mechanic told me that when you hook a battery up backwards the first things to go are the radio and alternator. That is why Loren suggested the fuse on the back of the radio. What I don't get is that you said the radio turns on but there is no sound.
  5. I checked with the parts department for a 986 tank and .08 is the latest version. There is a picture of it on page one. Think this is the version that has a plastic plug for the dip stick, and the plug is removed for the 986. When I had the guy search for a 2005-2006 987 tank it also came back to .08. No clue why it is not shown on PET.
  6. I put 996 clear halogen headlights in my 1997 a few years ago from ebay off a 1999 that was being parted out. I seem to remember Porsche had multiple part numbers back then. I took a picture of the part number sticker on one of the headlights - think this is the right.
  7. Where are you getting the part number for the tank. If from the tank itself then take a picture.
  8. If the battery is connected and the connector to a seat removed and the ignition switch turned on = air bag light. OBDII is for emissions and the air bag light has nothing to do with emissions. You need to find someone with a Durametric or PST2/PIWIS to turn the light off.
  9. This is the connector for a 2.5. It has a slide lock. Stick the blade of a long thin screwdriver in and twist the screwdriver to slide the lock to the unlock position.
  10. Use a 5 mm socket to remove the nuts for the mounting studs.

  12. Send me your VIN. But again, it will only show warranty and recall history, not service history unless it was serviced at my local dealer.
  13. The nut for that ball is known to back off over time. Next time I would suggest loctite or if you do not have it a drop of super glue on the threads. You are lucky you caught it before any damage was done.
  14. Interior lights remain on for about 2 minutes unless you lock the car or turn the ignition on.
  15. This is how I did mine. Drove the car over to RennShop and paid $800 for the clutch kit and labor. This is a new independent shop near my office owned by a guy who use to work at local dealerships. Dealership wanted $1,850. In my younger days I have replaced clutches myself on my driveway, but I did not look forward to doing it on a Boxster. Too old to be laying on my back under a car for hours.
  16. Do you have a copy of the working log? Here is some info on the 6 ranges. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=20076 I do not know the details but the car is shipped to the dealer with something that limits the speed to 20 mph. That is the red sticker on the shift lever. I assume this is done by limiting the engine rpms. When the car is prepared by the dealer this speed limiter thing is removed.
  17. The policy varies from dealership to dealership. You have no right to the service history for a vehicle you did not own when it was serviced. That belongs to the former owner. At least you got a verbal history. I am on a few UK Porsche message boards and they go through the same thing. My dealer will give out the history. I have checked out cars for friends that were thinking of buying. But then I have known the folks at my dealer for 9 years. Any delaer can pull warranty and recall history since that gets billled to Atlanta. But for service such as an oil change you have to go to the dealer that did the work. If you can find the original owner you might get the owner to authorize the dealer to give you the history.
  18. I know how to remove the fender screws. Take it to any body shop, then give the guy a 12 pack of Dos Equis if he gets the screw out. As stated earlier putting a lubricant on the threads is not going to do anything. Jonas and Hans must put the fenders on with an air tool for the screws. One of them was stronger then the other. Just don't do what I did. I drilled a hole in the middle of the screw for an easy-out, then when I tried to back the screw out with a cresent wrench on the easy-out the easy-out broke. Then I had a rounded torx screw recess and a broken off easy-out in the middle. Thank god the broken easy-out was flush with the recess.
  19. I had this done on my January 1997 2 weeks ago when my clutch was replaced. Since my car is so old I have the first version seal and intermediate shaft flange. The rear case bolts were also replaced. People have been calling them blue bolts because they have a blue sealant. Since you are updating the other stuff you might as well do the bolts when the transmission is out. You can see 2 of these bolts in the picture after the transmission was put back in.

  21. Under the clamshell is a motor with 2 cables connected to it. Left cable and right cable. Disconnect the cables from the motor. First picture is from a car like yours. You will see a brass clip that holds each cable to the motor. Lift up on the clip to remove the clip and pull the cable out. Inside the black housing of the cable is is the inner drive cable. The drive cable is spun by the motor to make the top work. The drive cable had a square end. Second picture is my 1997 and your motor will not have the lever on top. Pull on the square end and see if the drive cable has broken inside the black housing. In the 3rd picture you can see a section of the drive cable has broken off from the rest. This also shows the square end on the left of the picture that goes into the motor.
  22. I reread your message and you may have closed the top while the tube was in the way. If so then the other thing to check is to see if you broke one of the plastic joints. Still need to put the top in the service position to see what is going on in there.
  23. I have see that more than once. The first thing to check on your year is to see of there is a broken transmission cable. This has already been covered in the top section, so start reading the older messages. You clamshell is probably tweaked but you can bent it back into shape, and this has also been covered. You got to get the top into the service position to inspect what went wrong or broke.
  24. You look at the clutch disc to see how much friction material is left before the rivets are exposed. If you can, compare your disc next to a new one. This is pressure plate side of my 1997 Boxster clutch disc with 67,000 miles and you can see some of the rivets were rubbing against the pressure plate.
  25. Lots of white smoke out the back can be the oil separator.
