  1. No way would I pay $11.50 or buy it now for a dollar more. Plus, I do not think it is the racing version since there is no picture In my younger days they said you can get it out with a shirt collar stay. Or, a nail file. Both modified.
  2. I have no trick to defy gravity on a mid-engine car for a DIYer. You have to pump the oil out of the container into the fill plug opening with a plastic pump unless you can get the spout of the container up there at an angle. Open to new suggestions.
  3. Have you removed the radio removal keys first?
  4. The most common complaint is noise from the clutch pedal. You should have someone operate the clutch while you listen at the bell housing area to make sure the noise from the back. There is a TSB for the Boxster and 996 for a creaking noise from the bell housing. I do not have the Boxster one but the 996 one notes that as a certain date a new clutch release lever went into production. In any event, I would see if you can duplicate the noise and verify it is from the bell housing area. I doubt if it has anything to do with bleeding the clutch as you would have noticed the noise much sooner.
  5. Your choice. The top is a small screwdriver with the handle ground down and cut off. The bottom is the factory tool. A mechanic I know made the top one because he says it works better.
  6. For what is is worth. On the PCA tech site it is said they should not vary by more than 4% on an all wheel drive.
  7. OBC and cruise control requires a steering column switch assembly with the 2 additional stalks, like in the picture. The assembly that has just the additional stalk for cruise control cost more than the assembly with all 4 stalks - for some strange reason. I do not see why the cruise control could not be turned on before the retrofit. We have the OBC turned on before we do the retrofit.
  8. On the early cars both were the same size but I notice when we work on the newer cars there are 2 different sizes. Check with your parts person but they should be 999 049 020 40 and 999 049 024 40. The first part number should be the large one and I hope the second is the small one. Called a plastic nut. About a dollar for the pair.
  9. Our local Boxster group has jacked up many cars over the years without a problem. The first pic is my car up by about 14" and I have gone the full 19" capacity of my jack and I can still open and close the doors. We do not jack on strut bars. The next 2 pics have Xs for the front and rear stands. I leave the jack in place if I can when a car is on stands. We sometimes work on driveways that have a slope and we also have an earthquake from time-to-time. Sometimes, if we have removed the wheel, I will slide the wheel under the part of the car we are working on because if the car falls down the wheel is bigger than my chest.
  10. Very good. Those little air bag screws are only 7.5 foot pounds but with blue thread lock you need Popeye arms unless you have the proper tool. If you use a short T30 bit in a magnetic holder the holder is too "fat" to fit in the hole on a 4 spoke but does fit the larger 3 spoke hole. So I bought a 2 3/4" long bit to use on my 1/4" drive ratchet since I was removing so many steering wheels. I bought the long bit from a place that sells tools for German cars as it is also used on VW/Audi air bags and it was hard to find, but a more common 2" T30 bit will also work. If you found a 2 1/2" long bit you might want to let others know where as I did not see one at HD or Wal-Mart.
  11. If your T30 tool is in the head of the torque screw then you just need to turn it counter clockwise. If you are using the screwdriver type then it is hard to do because you have little leverage and may have to use pliers on the handle. There is loctite on the screws so it takes some effor to break them free. The screws are on an angle so your tool should be on an angle. I use a torx bit on the end of a ratchet wrench.
  12. A guy in the UK put a 2003 standard exhaust on his older car so I cannot see why the 2003/4 sport exhause would not fit on a 2000. Porsche has not yet released a TSB with an application guide for the new style sport exhaust. The only part I know is for the kit. 000 044 200 20. Until Porsche releases a TSB will not know what parts are included in the kit. I doubt it will have a tip included as there are 3 different tips that bolt on. Doubt it will include a switch. The new 996 sport exhaust kit does not have a switch since there are 2 styles of switches depending if you have a LHD or RHD car.
  13. Look at the black alignment marks I made. On your replacement wheel the center of the square hole should be aligned with the black mark on the shaft. Do not break the plastic prongs that stick out from the air bag spiral spring when you push the new wheel on the splined shaft.
  14. The OBDII book says the same thing. Secondary air injection pump not triggered or or not working. So, the DME thinks something is wrong and you get the light. It is an emissions issue. I am not the OBDII or electrical guy - when smog pumps first came out we removed them as they were belt driven back then and put plugs in the exhaust manifold. :o So, maybe someone here can help you or search here under those fault code numbers. On the Boxster it is an electrical air pump. It makes a turbine sound on the passenger side when you start a cold car- then goes off when the cats are heated. Do you hear the pump come on when you start the car?
  15. A local Porsche shop recently put on a cooling system tech session. Porsche is on something like the 7th generation of the plastic tank. I have bought a special tool to remove the spring band clamps on the hoses when it is my time as I have been told they are a pain to get to. Porsche has also come out with a new cap that seals better. The part number ends in 01. There is also a new procedure to check the cooling system for leaks and bleeding it. Wish you were in San Jose as this would be a nice DIY project.
  16. I was going to put one in but my Duralast battery was replace today for the third time in 27 months. I measured the battery mounting tray just in case. Since AutoZone gave me another battery the project is off my list for the time being. If someone in San Jose wants to install an Optima then send me an email. Jeff
  17. When I started out Boxstering almost 5 years ago everyone still had the factory warranty. Now that the cars are falling out of warranty this is what I have seen on the message boards as a general solution to getting your car back on the road. Porsche may pay for the part and the customer pays for the labor if it is a known problem. If you have an aftermarket warranty then some times the company will pick up the labor. Just a very general rule of thumb.
  18. My picture is a US Boxster for reference purposes. I put the blue line to no particular bulb - but I think I happened to use the ABS. Have no idea which one is for the seat belt on a UK car but if you send me your cluster I will take it apart for you.
  19. I drove the car with the top up not down. I was afraid to drive with the top down and the engine lid off as the plastic window would be right above the exposed engine and there is a lot of heat.
  20. When I put in air horns I wanted to use a normal Porsche dash switch to control which horns were on, or all horns on at the same time. I had done this on other cars with an oem switch but I ran into the same problem because the Porsche switches are momentary. Not being the elctrical guy I contacted 996 owner Sandy who prepared several diagrams using the Porsche switch with a relay and with a latching relay. If you are not electrical you might want to contact Sandy as he really knows this stuff.
  21. The warning/idiot lights have a black holder and are 1.2 wats. The LCD illumination bulbs have a tan bulb holder and are 1.5 watts. Loren has the part numbers. You can remove these from the back of the cluster The bulbs that light up the analog gauges are 3 watts. They have a green holder, which is not part of the bulb, as you can replace just the bulb. But to change these you have to open up the cluster to get to them. I also have not been able to find the first two style bulbs at local car parts places. We have had reports that they are also used by BMW and Volvo. The Porsche instrument cluster is made by VDO and I suspect they make clusters for other car companies.
  22. I am not the electrical guy, but all dash switches are double pole monentary. If you want such a switch to be on/off then you need some type of relay.
  23. Your wiring is off. #1 wire is ground. On your year you insert the other 4 wires into empty slots in the white connector that plugs into the back of the cluster. #2 wire goes to slot 20. #3 goes to 21. #4 goes to 22. #5 goes to 25. The connector at the other end of the wires that plugs into the stalk has 6 slots for 6 wires but we only need 5, so slot 6 is not used. This is the harness we show how to make plugged in to the OBC stalk.
  24. When I did my 30k service a few years ago I removed both covers and started the car to see what it sounded like. Good. Then I got the bright idea of driving the car around like that to see what it sounded like and put the top up so that the plastic window would not melt. I got 2 blocks down the street and I melted from all the heat. The hoses are the protective rubber padding for the shift cables. You can push down on them more if you want.
