  1. 1 quart too much is not going to hurt anything. If you put way too much oil in then it can get drawn into the intake system and you will see a lot of smoke right away. The crankcase is vented.
  2. Wow, very good. CTS, the company that makes the top, should hire you. You are correct that the new style transmission has a microswitch. I pulled one out and it is in my fingers. I guess that is why the lever/microswitch above the top motor was eliminated when the new style transmission went into production. You do need the after running time, the second or so the motor continues to run, when the top is down. This pulls down on the black rods attached to the clamshell so that the clamshell is held tightly to the body. The underside of .clamshell, in turn, has those 5 round rubber discs which clamp down on the canvas. Otherwise you would have rattle city from the top and the clamshell. I thought the run time was controlled by the top relay/control unit and that there is some type of timer in it that allows to motor to run that extra second. Your device stops the power to the motor sooner than normal. Is that what it does? Did you ever try another relay and see if the problem went away?
  3. The red thing on the far left with the threaded rod is the engine jack. The transmission with the chain around it is on the transmission jack. Not my picture but that is how my dealer does it.
  4. I have removed transmissions from cars and my truck on my driveway for clutch and transmission rebuilds, but never a Boxster. It is something I would not want to try without the car being on a lift since it is so confined in the engine compartment. I watched Peter remove a Boxster transmission in 25 minutes. For a seal replacement. :o But he has a lot of experience. The Boxster also has a brace to support the weight of the engine, except it goes on top since we can get to the top of the engine on a Boxster. I have never seen it but there is a drawing of it in the workshop manual. The guys in the shop use an engine jack instead. It is like a very long jack stand that goes from the floor to the bottom of the engine. For the transmission they use a transmission jack.
  5. Each year Porsche publishes a technical introduction booklet. It tells you if there have been changes or improvements to the current model year. I have them from 1997-2003 and I am waiting for the 2004 to come out. There is no mention of a change to the air box in the 2003 edition. The part number for a 1998-2004 air box is 996 110 121 06. There is no special part number for a 2003/4 air box. I have not to remove the air vent from a 2003/4 to see with my own eyes, but I think the reports are wrong. If you really want to increase the induction sound then go with the EVO unit since the entire stock air box and tube are removed from the car. When the local owners get together I can tell who has it. But one of our local owners go tired of chasing check engine lights and he removed it, while another local owner just had one put in her car and no light so far.
  6. The air tube is there for a purpose, it directs and controls air into the air box, and reduces the possibility of water being sucked in. Porsche has changed the original design and came up with a reftofit kit so that the air tube can do it's thing, yet people want to yank them out. I spoke to Peter about this a while back and he though you would also suck in air that is warmer which could reduce hp. A guy on the UK board asked his mechanic and his mechanic said the same thing. It does increase the induction sound and I don't think it will harm your motor. You can also increase the induction noise by going with one of the oiled filters if you want to risk the air flow sensor contamination issue. The "best" way I know to increase the sound with no risk is to simply remove the black foam covering from the stock air filter. Several Boxster owners have done this and they like the sound increase.
  7. It found my 1997 Boxter. Seems like it is missing the "s" in Boxster in 3 different places. ;) Insurance companies must have something like this. When I bought my car the first thing they asked for was the VIN and they knew what it was. On the Boxster Porsche did not start with 0000. Mine ends in 1404 but it is not the 1404th unit produced. They also used a different numbering system for different countries.
  8. Once in a while I see it being done at my local dealer on Boxsters due to oil leaks. They get the covers off while the motor is in the car - don't know about a 996. They also replace the spark plug tubes and o-rings, and the round green seals.
  9. For wheels I use the Petmatex brand that has aluminum in it. I also see mechanics using it. Any decent parts place with have it. You only use a lttlel dab so get the smallest tube they have, about a 1 oz tube or smaller. It also comes in a stick form.
  10. I think I will try Kumho next time. They also have good reviews. I can always put on the N rating. Always wondered what it would be like 20 years from now and no tire company made N tires for an old Boxster. If your are old then you may remember the 1980s Ford Mustang and the TRX wheels.   11. The regulator alone is about $250 so if the charge is $400 you might want to let the dealer do it if you have never replaced and electric cable regulator. I got a new drivers side on ebay for $25 becuase no one bid on it, just in case I need it since this is a problem area. http://www.bombaydigital.com/boxster/projects/window/
  12. They are Sumitomo HTR Z II from TireRack. Got them 3 years ago and they were $500 for the set of 4, then had a local wheel place mount them. Good bang for the buck, but not fantastic in the wet. I have about 20,000 miles on them. They are not N rated but I could care less.
  13. I assume the top motor is working. The V-lever will not move unless a cable is turning. See if enough of the square drive is sticking out of the cable housing. If your motor and cable is good then: See if you can operate the transmission with a drill on the end of the cable. There are pictures in this section. The cable turns a worm gear which in turn turns a 1/2 moon gear in the transmission. Sometimes the moon gear will jump off the worm gear so while you are operating the drill you have to rotate the V-lever by hand to get the gears to mesh. Remember the cable can turn in either direction, as can the V-lever. The best thing to do is remove the transmission and then the black metal plate on the rear. You can then inspect to see if it is ok. You will want to remove mostly likely just to replace the cable. There are pictures in this section.
  14. Original tires from the factory were continential. Replacement is sumitomo. For my Boxster. No N rating on the replacement tires.
  15. I went through the same thing at the same speed 5 few years ago when we were all new. I thought it had to do with the spoiler going up at about 75mph, because after that speed it would go away. New tires and a balance and it was gone.

  17. We had a cooling tech session in January at an independent shop. This shop has put on several tech sessions for us over the years. They do work on cars that are out of warranty. The owner said they have been replacing the 00 caps with the newer 01 caps. They even test the 01 cap before they put it in just to make sure. I have a January 1997 so I do not even have a 00 cap. My cap has the VW/Audi logo and part number on it like the early cars. Any decent radiator shop can pressure test the cooling system and cap if you do not want to pay Porsche dealer prices. Just tell them it is really a VW. Peace of mind if you want to rule out a cooling system leak. You would not need to bleed unless the coolant level has fallen below the height of the motor or something else is going on
  18. On a Boxster the connector will only go back together one way, so I can't help you on that. Your air bags work, but the system has detected a fault. The only way I know to turn off an air bag light is with the PST2, disconnecting the battery will not do it.
  19. Disconnect the black push rods and operate the clamshell manually. If it will not sit flush and the supports are not bent then the clamshell itself may be tweaked. I assume your timing is right on. That is what happened to Calvin's 1997. We removed the clamshell and laid it out the ground and it was obvious it had been tweaked. So we twisted it back into shape.
  20. Hope Sandy see this. Sandy is saying to buy another spoiler switch and remove the toogle part that you push with your finger from the switch. Then take the toggle off the footwell switch and put it on the body of the spoiler switch. Then use your "new" modified footwell switch for the OBC. The 3 inside terminals are for the OBC, and the 2 outside are for the illumination just like you did with the spoiler switch.
  21. The picture is a Boxster, as is this one. It is exactly the same set up on a 996 except the orientation of the engine is 180 degrees different. On a Boxster we jack up the left side. On a 996 you jack up the right side. It is hard not to see the drain plug in the oil pan, and the black plastic filter cannister. It is actually easier to change the oil on a 996 because the plug and filter are closer to the rear of the car. On a Boxster we have to slide under the car to get to it. You will most likely need a tool to remove the filter cannister as they are usually on so tight.
  22. My 8mm allen bit is in the drain plug. This is a Boxster so turn your monitor 180 degrees.
  23. All I know is that if the electric door lock fails you get a double beep from the alarm. Perhaps you have not hooked back together all the connectors.
  24. Sometimes I wish I still had my 2 Fiat X1/9s I had in school. My first was a carb version with a metal tank - never a problem. The second was a fuel injected version and for some reason Fiat switched to plastic when fuel injection came out. A seam on the plastic tank would fail over time - went through 3 of them. Then I got smart. Went to the wrecking yard and got a metal tank to replace the plastic. Real easy to replace the tank on that car, and that was the end of the problem. Maybe Fiat makes the Boxster tank. With the mid-engine Fiat the tank was in the hot engine compartment. On the box it is in the trunk. Strange that Porsche could not get it right the 1st or at least the 2nd time. 996 also has a plastic tank like ours and they have the same problem, but it does not seem to be as common. I bet you will have to replace the tank sooner or later. Maybe the 10th version will be out by then.
  25. Stevens Creek Porsche had one on Monday and it was gone 2 days later. I offered to trade my house and an organ, but I was too late. Not even a T-Shirt, but I have the brochure. And the internal DVD which I have to return.
