  1. At a work on cars day a 1999 996 owner showed up and replaced it. It is under the battery tray and held in place with a torx screw.
  2. At the tech sessions. The electrical conntector to one of the fuel injectors is disconnected, then the engine started and turned off. Or, with the engine running, remove the oil cap until the check engine light comes on. I like the injector since you will quickly get a misfire fault code.
  3. Or check with the dealership in NJ that is supposed to have the mirror in inventory according to the parts computer. Or you can buy it from a local dealer who will then buy it fromt he NJ dealer and resell it to you.
  4. I have used 87 octane in my Boxster for 9 years. While I may not be going to Porsche heaven, I can't tell the difference between 87 and 91.
  5. 5 Years ago Henry put in the mirror kit in his 2000. One of the projects filmed for the DVDs. This is a picture of the kit.
  6. I said the same thing to the parts guy. Also if you have the outside dimming mirror that won't work because the sensor is in the interior mirror. But I will not be suprised if Porsche comes out with something sooner or later. Porsche has discontinued other things, like the original real speaker kit, just to later come out with a new version with the extension wiring harness needed for 2003-2004.
  7. Bob in the parts dept. at Stevens Creek also checked and came back with the same info, both not available. The kit is the mirror, wiring harness, and ordinary tie-wraps. There is a dealer in NJ that according to the parts computer has the mirror itself in inventory. There are no harnesses in the US, but there are 40 in Germany. The harness part number 996 612 986 00 has been superseded to 996 612 984 00.
  8. The amber on the headlight cover is solid amber plastic and you cannot remove it. It is not a film or tint that can be removed. This thread is about removing the internal amber lense inside the headlight, and has no application on for a 2002 with the standard halogen amber headlights.
  9. I have not put in the 987 kit but I can figure it out. The rivets with the knob thing at the end are called open end rivets. Those I would use on the middle section of the roll bar padding, contrary to how willga did it. The closed end rivets that you say have a darker stem I would used for the 2 clips that are riveted to the roll bar hoops. The 986 windstop mounting kit only has the closed end type of rivets. Interesting that the 987 kit has 2 types of rivets. A closed end rivet does not permit water to seep into the rivet. Those plastic things are bushing that go into the roll bar. They look just like the ones in my pic which is from a 986. When you pull the padding off the bushings may pull off the rollbar. You will see what those bushings are for once you get the padding off. They get damaged a bit when you pull the padding off, so they are included in the 987 kit, but not the 986 kit.
  10. When you get them let us know if the are factory or aftermarket parts. I see Boxster not Boxster S and I thought the 987 base car did not come with sill protectors. Suncoast ids them as 986, but it looks like the 987 protectors except it says Boxster and not Boxster S. Not up on the new cars so I don't know if the base 987 had a sill option and the sill said Boxster.
  11. Ok, I confess. We have done 2001s before. Started doing them 7 years ago. Here is a picture from a few months ago of a 2001. On that car we did it with the switch because the owner has long legs and did not want to do it with the stalk.

  13. There is info on this motorsport oil mist separator on the Cayman Club forum. This is a dual chamber oil separator so it is twice the size as the standard separator. Guy in England got his hands on the bulletin from PAG and it is for a 986. I have checked and there is no PCNA/US 986 version of this bulletin for some strange reason. The bulletin was issued March 2, 2004 and says it is for 2003 up, so to me that would mean 2003-2004 986. Don't know what is involved with a 987. The Cayman owners are using or trying to use it. They have clearance issues with the secondary air pump being in the way because this separator is so much larger, so they have to remove or modify it so that the separator can fit. The Cayman engine compartment is different than a 986 and that is why the Cayman has clearance issues. I had the dealership parts guy check last week and it is not shown in PET. The Cayman guys are apparently ordering it through race shops that have access to motorsports parts, but I think it is a part that can be ordered from any dealership. My local dealersip parts guy says he can order it and there are 3 of them in Atlanta, with a full list price of $518.12. You also need a line/hose to the separator that is different than the one used with the standard separator. There are none in the US but 15 in Germany at $80.01 retail. You also need 2 bolts to bolt it to the crankcase. So you can buy these parts from a dealership rather than a shop with connection with motorsports. You also need to remove the plastic intake in order to get the monster separator in and bolted down to the crankcase. The time units on the bulletin is 360 which I think works out to 4 hours. I have spoken to a local independent mechanic that use to work at dealerships and recently opened his own shop. He is interested in this and if a local owner wants to give it a try then let me know.
  14. Porsche says the top frame is magnesium. I have no clue if your broken part is magnesium or aluminum, or how to tell. If you needed a very expensive part for the frame I would say check with the Boxster spec racing guys because they remove the top and have no need for it. If it can be welded and fails again then you have to do this twice. If it were my car for $217 I would replace the part. There is a local 2.5 owner who broke the mounting lug on the frame where the push rod mounts to open and close the top. He replaced the entire frame. The part he broke is different than your part. I dont't know what he did with his old frame. If he still has it then maybe you can buy the part from him. Mikes box.   16. I took these pictures in September 2007. Part number number on bag ends in .01 but the part number on the cap is .02. Back then the .02 part number was not in PET.
  17. Lay both bulb holders in the trunk and turn on the lights. Swap the running light bulbs to make sure you do not have a bad bulb. Then get a volt meter and see if you have 12 volts to the 2 clips that hold the bulb in place.
  18. Under acceleration the rev limiter cuts fuel to 3 of the 6 cylinders. That is why it fells like the car is running out of gas when you hit the rev limiter. That is how the engine is protected from high rpms. But when you miss a downshift the rev limiter cannot protect the engine, as the high engine rpms are created by the wheels and the car moving forward. Not a mechanical engineer, but you would need some type of mechanical device to disconnect the transmission rpms from the engine when a certain rpm was reached. Like a clutch for the flywheel. Such as device would have to be able to function in a split second.
  19. When the 2003 clear tail lights came out everyone wanted them. Problem was there were very few of the USA versions available, so people bought the ROW version. You could buy it with just the tail light, or as an assembly with the tail light and bulb holder. Problem was the ROW bulb holder did not have an extension piece attached to it for the running light bulb, as running lights are not required there. They are required in the US so we have the extension piece and the additional bulb. This picture is the extension piece a ROW bulb holder does not have. The bulb for the running light is the type you can remove by pulling straight out. The bulb laying on the side in the picture is the running light bulb. This is why I asked you about the bulb holder. To see if the prior owner bought the ROW version that came with the ROW bulb holder. You must have the US version because you said there is a little bulb at the end, but is it the little bulb laying down that you can remove by pulling it out?

  21. What car. What year. If a Boxster does it have rear "clear" factory tail lights from a 2003-2004. If a Boxster does it have aftermarket lights.
  22. Washers were an option with standard halogen headlights, and standard with factory installed lits. But from you description it sure sounds like you have lits. If you have 601 on the option sticker then for sure you have them.
  23. When my local dealer got the launch 987s I went over to check them out, and noticed that there was no emission sticker on the rear trunk lid like the 986s. Thought it was strange. Later the dealership had a 987 tech session. The 987 was taken apart so we could see the new stuff, and the engine lid was off. Then I saw the sticker on the engine lid. Makes no sense to put it on the engine lid. Since I have a 1997 my car has been smogged 5 times. Once in a while the smog inspector will ask me where the sticker is so he can see what equipment it has.
  24. I have not seen the inside of a 987. Here is a 986. It is easy to remove the "pill" for the immobilizer. It is cliped in, not glued. Can you do that on a 987?
