  1. I am over my head so maybe someone knows or I will put it on my list of 1,000 Peter questions. If I understand this article you will not have the power of a 2.7. http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa_question.a...F-E9F96FD62F68} I believe there is a mistake in the article. True the 2.5 does not have the second cross plenum. The 2.7 does.
  2. The problem is any engine can have a problem and even replacement engines can have a problem. If you search on this site I think Peter when he ran the Boxster section answered some questions on e-gas conversions. http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa.asp Here is a question that Scott answered. http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa_question.a...7-DB9A96E224EB} You should contact your dealer and see if they will goodwill parts and/or labor. You can buy a rebuilt from Porsche that comes with a 2 year warranty. Porsche has recently jacked up prices so I do not know what the going rate it. It cost less if you have a rebuildable core.
  3. In the picture above there is no emission sticker under the trunk lid like on the 986. Guess it is not required anymore. So what is this in the third opening in the front bumper cover.
  4. Do you know why there is no compression. Your 2.5 is not e-gas like the 2.7 and 3.2. There are ways to adapt your car to an e-gas engine but I have not been paying attention. Another alternative is to put in a 3.4 non e-gas engine from a 996. I do not know any mechanics who rebuild our engines. They are simply replaced with a used or rebuilt. If you are in the SF Bay Area you might want to contact Tim Benson. http://www.fastlanesc.com/ Also search on this board for monster boxster. This is a 3.4 conversion Tim did on a 2000 2.7. There is nothing wrong with the original 2.7 engine and I think Tim still has it at his shop.
  5. The cluster in my pictures is the original style from a 996. There are several compaies that sell faces. http://www.nrauto.com/sub_index.asp?spage=Gauges Everyone wants to switch from black to silver. You might want to see if someone with black faces wants to swap clusters. Then you would have to have the mileage adjusted by a shop.
  6. You may not have a turbo cluster so sell it by the part number. For others that search, what I have called the new style is on top and the old style is on the bottom. It is easy to tell just due to the fact the connector colors do not match and you can see external bulb holders on the bottom of the old style. New style uses LEDs. Due to the sharp angle of this picture it looks like the bottom one is wider than the other. They are in fact the same width on the back side.
  7. Sorry, it has been a while since I took a cluster apart so I just looked at a spare one I have. I forgot an important step. There is a black plastic thing that sticks up on each end of the back of the cluster. My screwdriver is pointing to it. You need to slide both of them over before you release the tabs. Otherwise you cannot separate the cluster to get to the internal bulbs. Then once it is apart you can see the internal bulb holders.
  8. Your picture show the tab at the bottom of the cluster released. You still need to release the top tab inside the cluster like I described before. It is easier if you release the top one first. To get to the internal tab you need to put a flat bade at an angel inside the cluster like in this picture.
  9. Search around as it has been covered before. Your year has the smaller 26 pin connectors. The cluster you bought has the larger 32 pin connectors. You cannot physically plug that cluster into your car. Plus it would not work even if you could as your car is not wired for a 32 pin cluster. 1997-2000 Boxster and 1999-2001 996 had what I call the old style cluster. The new style came out in 2001 on the Boxster, the same year for the turbo, and in 2002 for the 996. For your year you need a 1999-2001 996 cluster, from a C2.
  10. Around 2000 Porsche came out with a High Performance Audio System. It was hot at the time. It was a retrofit kit and I think you could get it as a factory option. It came with a more powerful amp and better speakers. The amp was an exact replacement for the standard amp. The HPAS sort of went away when Bose came out. It use to be in the tequipment catalog. I am not sure if it is still available. I saw just the amp on ebay a few weeks ago and there were no bids. Don't think people knew what it was.
  11. You do need to separate the cluster to got to those bulbs. If you look inside you will see a black plastic tab which keeps it together. I reach in there with a thin bladed tool and release the tab. Look at the back of the cluster and you will see a white paper sticker with a bar code. To the top left and right there is an opening shaped like a triangle. Get a good light and look for the internal tab. You stick your thin flat bladed tool in one of the openings and release the interior tab that is keeping the top of the cluster together. Then release the black tab at the bottom of the cluster. Once the cluster is open you will see various bulb holders. The illumination bulbs are in the green holders. They are standard bulbs you should be able to find at a parts place. Bad design.
  12. Pictures of the glass window top being put on.
  13. Calvin found a mechanic in Santa Clara for $400 in labor. 2.5 clutch kit on ebay for $265. I have replaced clutches on the driveway on other cars before. I would not look forward to doing it on a Boxster without a lift. For $400 I would not even have to get my hands dirty. My 1997 is about due. Let's let Calvin go first. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...939entry21939
  14. These are before and after pictures from Steve Evans. Justin on the UK Boxster board had the glass top put on yesterday. Here are his pictures. He has a 2000 2.7.
  15. Horse trading on RennTech. You should see what happens at our local work on cars day. We pull a part out of one car to replace it with another part the owner has purchased. Then someone at the event buys the removed part because they want it and we put it in their car. Saves ebay fees.
  16. If you are going to try to do this over the phone and this is a Porsche dealer then they will need the serial number for the radio to get the code unless they have it down somewhere else. You will need a real cooperative dealer. You are supposed to go to the dealer in person and prove you own the car. Push and hold the TP button unit you see Becker on the display, then rotate the right knob 2 clicks for the serial number display.
  17. A contributing member can read the actual bulletin, but not print or download.
  18. It is in the radio manual. From my memory if you enter the wrong code 3 times then you see WAIT. You must then turn the key on and have the radio on for a least an hour before you can enter what hopefully is the correct code. If you enter the code way too many times then the radio has to be on for 24 hours. How many times did you enter the code and do you know if you have the correct code.
  19. It is on this board in the TSB section. Both the original and new style exhaust instructions.
  20. It is the control unit also used on the Boxster. Hang on to it. Some people just get the headlights from ebay and then want to know what parts they are missing.
  21. That lookes like the tiptronic. It is more in the middle. The DME has a 996 part number. The tip control unit a 986 part number.
  22. Remove the plastic cover net to the battery on the passenger side. You will see 2 black plastic caps over the valves. I do not know which is which.
  23. With your year you should have the 4 spoke. Not worth the expense to recover. Many 996 and 986 people have changed to the 3 spoke. The 4 spoke was also used on the 993. So there are a lot of 4 spoke wheels out there. My friend switch to a 3 spoke and got someting like $50 on ebay for his 4 spoke with the air bag. We have 5 local owners I know of that switched to 3 spoke wheels. I switched as well.
  24. I see no individual parts listed for the alternator. No one fixes things anymore. It is remove and replace. If it is the regulator. This guy replaced the regulator himself. It is a standard Bosch part. Tell them you need it for a VW. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...1&hl=alternator
