  1. Sounds like the usual 4 spoke problem. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1728
  2. The problem is, the defogger stripes look like an orange color from the outside so you notice it. Porsche uses a darker color. But you cannot always have everything. For owners in the SF Bay Area, I was show 3 pictures of a glass top replacement at Stevens Creek Porsche after being told about it by CA Boxster. The only connection with Stevens Creek is that a customer brought the car in so people could see what the top looked like. I did not have a scanner so I took a picture of the pictures. The original pictures were taken on April 19th. This top was put on by Premier Upholstery in Santa Clara. This top looked different than the BAS top. Must be 2 companies making a glass window top. The first pic is the BAS. The second is Premier.
  3. The only way I know to steal a Boxster due to the imobiliser is if you have the key or tow it away. I have asked 2 Porsche mechanics if there is any way around this and they said no. You do not need an aftermarket alarm. What a US Boxster does not come with is a tilt sensor. UK cars have this because it is required by insurance companies. Porsche sells a retrofit kit.
  4. It runs to the booster in the A pillar on the passenger side.
  5. The best picture I have seen is in this thread. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...5&st=0entry24
  6. That is the shop. Manny at Stevens Creek Porsche also does the top replacements. I have watched him a bit on a Boxster and 996 but I had to leave. Maybe I will kidnap him one Saturday for a work on cars day.
  7. 02 is for 2005. 01 is for 2004 and older. Use Loren's part number and spank your parts guy.
  8. You can always go to Wales and for 950 pounds you get the top and it installed. Look at the prior thread. 3 guys on the UK Boxster board had it intalled at the factory and they all had good reviews. It installs just like the factory top. There are pictures of it being installed in the prior thread. The company does not have a partner in the US but they do in Canada. I bet they are going to jack up the price if they start selling the top in North America. Get it direct from the factory. There is a shop in Santa Clara that installs tops.
  9. You got me curious so I hooked up my digital volt meter to the alarm horn connector. This is a January 1997 Boxster. I had the meter connected for all 3 tests. (1) With the alarm not set there was a constant 9.1 volts. No key in the ignition. I am suprised. I do not know why there would be voltage present if the alarm is not going off. So your car is the same as mine. (2) I then set the alarm, confirmed it was set by the blinking red dash light, and voltage was 8.9. (3) Then I opened the inside door to set the alarm off, which I could tell by the blinking head/tail lights. Voltage was pulsing between 11.1 - 9.5 in sync with the flashing lights. No horn beeping because I removed the conector for this test. You must have a bad horn so replace it. Either that will solve the problem or you are going to have a noisy car if the false alarms continue. I wish I knew if a bad horn is related to "false" alarms, as if the flashing lights are to let you know that the horn does not work. The Boxster owner did not tell me if he was getting false alarms when his horn went bad. But then, I did not ask how he knew the horn was bad.
  10. Don't understand. Does it go from zero to 9.6-11 volts. Or is there voltage all the time.
  11. You can buy it now. Steve offered to sell me one directly from the Wales factory. It is 595 pounds and he said about 50 pounds for shipping to California. Get one. I would like to see it in person.
  12. On the Box it was model year 03 for the glass rear window. On the 996 it was 2002. Then there is this for the Boxstir. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4503
  13. It is covered in the owners manual. One bar is something like a few cups of oil. Ignore it and have fun with your car.
  14. Well I might be a bit confused as we need to distinguish what flashing lights you are talking about. I assumed the red flashing LED on the dash worked, to let you know the alarm is set. When the alarm goes off it flashes the bulbs in the head/tail lights, and is supposed to make the alarm horn go beep beep. If the alarm horn is bad then when the alarm goes off then all that happens is the bulbs in the head/tail light blink. I replaced the alarm horn on a Boxster that did this. I first tried to fix the horn by turning the sealed adjustment screw on the side of the horn but it sounded like crap. It is just a VW horn and does not cost much. If you replace the alarm horn and the alarm goes off for no reason then you have a second problem. Except this will be a noisy problem with a working alarm horn. I just hope is is not a bad alarm control unit as they are expensive. You said you had the horns replaced last year. Which horns? For others, the top black horns are for the steering wheel. The round one below is for the alarm.
  15. Here is a 993 article from rennlist you will find interesting. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/show...light=tire+rack
  16. The alarm has it's own horn. It is not the same as the horns when you push on the steering wheel. The alarm horn is the round metal silver thing next to the battery on the drivers side. The steering wheel horns are behind the front bumper cover on the passenger side. Sounds like your alarm horn is dead and that is why you only see the flashing lights in the front and rear of the car when it goes off, and not also the alarm horn. Disconnect the connector to the alarm horn and hook up a volt meter. Arm the alarm then set it off and see if the voltage jumps from 0 to 12 volts in sinc with the flashing lights. If it does then replace the horn. Then you have to figure out why the alarm is going off by itself.
  17. Porsche issued a bulletin about this years ago for the Boxster - not sure about the 996. A plastic gasket was placed between the striker and door sill to avoid it. There are several complaints on the UK boards, boxa.net and maybe porschaforum.com If you search there for 'rust' you will see the complaints. One of the owners was trying to get 911 & Porsche World to do an article.
  18. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4331 If you have a problem with an oxygen sensor then this is an example of how valuable a PST2/PIWIS is. After Peter replaced my DME he checked the function of the 4 sensors as my other 5 fault codes were sensor related. I wish I had taken a picture of the screen. The values of all 4 sensors are displayed at the same time and there are numbers for each of the sensors. One sensor was reading below the limit and the other 3 were fine. You do not get this kind of info from a simple code reader. The sensor that was bad had been replaced twice before. But I had to replace it again. It is easy to replace if you know you must unlock the electrical connector. This is a pic from a tech session 2 years ago where the PST2 oxygen sensor readings were displayed on a wall so we could all see them. What I saw on the PIWIS was a bit different, but you can get the idea. I suggest you find a shop with a PST2/PIWIS and someone who knows how to use it. Otherwise you will just be throwing parts at the car thinking it is one thing when it might be another or a combination of things.
  19. Not even Posche charges much for the oil filter. Don't remember the going rate because I bought a bunch of them on ebay to bring to our work on cars days when we do oil changes. The filter is made by Mahle and even has the Mahle part number on it. Any import parts place should be able to get it and you can even find them on ebay. Don't forget the drain plug seal because it does not come in the box. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...7967601311&rd=1
  20. No clue. I think you bought a used PCM2 and maybe the CDC-4 unit from the same car? If you add a component to a MOST system I have been told you need to tell the system there is something new that has been added. Maybe your PCM unit already had been told it was hooked up to a changer and that information is somewhere in the PCM unit? What I do not get is that I would think you would need, at a minimun, have the PCM unit recoded to match the code in the instrument cluster. If you had replaced the CDR-23 or the instrument cluster then the codes need to match. Believe it or not, we had no paper clips last summer. Just my set of jewlers screwdrivers which were too big. I now carry in my car for our work on cars days an official set of paper clips due to last summer. And a can of wire taps. :P
  21. There are many online companies that sell the wrench. You can even find them on ebay. Just search for Hazet. Go by the part number because that wrench is used on many German cars and even a BMW motorcycle. Make sure it is 2169 and not 2169-1. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...sspagename=WDVW http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...sspagename=WD1V http://www.samstagsales.com/ http://www.zdmak.com/ Hazet also make a wrench for a Mercedes model. This will work on a 986/987/996/997. The difference is that there are 2 bolts that are place in the side of the tool, I guess to hold the cannister/filter. When those bolts are not in use or not needed then they are stored at the top.
  22. We tried this on 2002-2004 996 and it did not work. The wiring for the standard lights is different than xenon. Assume the same problem with the 997/987. Should be able to tell from the wiring diagram if anyone has one.
  23. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3389
  24. Here is some info I gathered on the Boxster a few years ago. http://www.babblers.org/forums/showthread....hlight=exciting
  25. Each of the 3 LCD displays has a light bulb behind it. If you cannot see a display it is usually because the bulb for that display has burned out. But you say you replaced the bulb. Did you replace the correct bulb. The bulb comes in a plastic holder as a single part, you cannot remove the bulb from the holder. The holder is tan. There are 3 of these on the back of the cluster. 1.5 watts is correct. Is the holder making good electrical contact with the circuit board.
