  1. I would use the GT3 bolts sold by Porsche which are 5 mm longer. The 2 mm difference is nothing. One of our local owners has 7 mm spacers because he has 996 wheels and he has the GT3 bolts. The GT3 bolts were also used on the special edition because of the 5 mm spacers that came with that car.
  2. My guess for #1 is that the car is still in the transit mode.
  3. What Perry did is exactly what Porsche did for the 2004 986 special edition. The height of the metal shift lever was reduced by about 1" so that the top of the shift knob is also lower than a normal 986/996. This is one way to reduce the shift throws, unlike how it is done with a B&M style short shift. If you did not want to take a hacksaw and grinder to your existing shift lever then you could always put in the shift tower used on the special edition.

  6. The crest is not a separate part from Porsche. You can get an aftermarket crest that you can stick on.

  9. Loren gave you the Beru number and you have the Bosch number, for your car. I have noticed no difference between the brands when we do a plug change. Either will work and Porsche seems to switch between brands.

  11. You must have cupholders below the vents that need to be removed so the a/c display can take it's place. The trim for the new location is 996 552 677 00 01C. You also need two brackets for the a/c display in it's new location, 996 573 501 00. These parts were about $12 from a dealer when we did it a few years ago.
  12. The only trim for your year is the single oval chrome held on with set screws. It just slides on.
  13. If the black plastic cable connector has broken you would not be able to get into any forward gear, but it is easy enough to check what is going on. Remove the center console and look. You should also look at the shift linkage on the side of the transmission to see if everything is connected.

  17. 987 exhaust during a tiptronic transmission replacement.
  18. 4th generation seal. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6175 This time it is a Cayenne style. It comes with the green plastic installation ring shown in the first picture, which protects the sealing lip as the seal is pressed into place. Then the plastic ring is removed. I removed it for the second and third pictures. What is unique is that there is no spring for the lip. The lip material is very pliable because it is made of a different material. For these reasons I think that is why there is the plastic ring. My pen is pointing to the area of where the spring would be on any other 'normal' oil seal, and where it was on the prior generations.

  20. The radio alarm contact is touching the side of your new radio and creating a ground, so the alarm chirps. If you look at your original radio it has a plastic insulator on the side, which your new radio does not have. So you do what Loren says or put a piece of tape on the side of your new radio, like in the picture.
  21. Take your car to a radiator shop and have them pressure test the tank and cap - it is standard VW/Audi threads. The tank cracks. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1838 The Boxster is 8 years old. Last time I checked Porsche was on the 9th generation tank in 8 years. And you have a 1999..... It is also a problem with the 996. I can only guess that is why your service rep suggested this as a problem. But first, make sure the coolant is at the max level and a low coolant level is not the cause of your light. When the tank is just a bit low the light will go on. When you restart the car and the coolant is hot then the light does not come on because the coolant has expanded and raised the level. You need to rule out a low level condition first.
  22. I think Orient is confusing 996/986 with 997/987. The short shift Porsche came out for the 996/986 is black metal and a clone of the blue metal B&M unit. The short shift Porsche came out with for the 997 is different. From the pictures it is blue plastic, part number 997 424 983 00, and is the same shifter used on the 987. It is in the first pic, and let's call it the new style Porsche short shift. I too have wondered if the new style would work on a 996/986. I have seen the standard 987 shift tower and it sure looks to be the same dimensions and mounting position as used in a 996/986. The second pic is the 987 standard shift and you can tell because it is black plastic. Other than the shift lever itself the 987 unit looks just like what is used on a 996/986. Same black and blue cable connectors. Same type of mount on the rear of the tower for the cables. Same 4 nuts to hold it down. But I have never seen them side-by-side to be a 100% sure the new style Porsche short shift will work with a 996/986. I guess you will just have to trust Brandywine. The third pic someone took of the tool to adjust the cables. I think it comes with the shifter, but Brandywine should be able to look in a box to be sure.
  23. Hardtop might no be bad since it looks like Porsche is using shoelaces for the soft top.
  24. Should be were the large yellow X is. It is like the top relay in that it is twice the size of the other relays.
